NOTE: This set, collected from Dylan's four small-venue appearances during off-days from the Dylan-Simon tour, omits all encores from Detroit and some encores from Cincinnati.

DEEP: Stunning, smartly configured, "raise the bar" box set of club shows from Summer '99. What we have here are 4 shows on five disks, with repeated encores omitted. This set is a killer. Impeccably housed in first-class packaging. Most important, the sound quality throughout is particularly fine, up close and personal for each show. A joy of a listen at over six and a half hours! Performance highlights are too numerous to detail; this one warrants repeated listens and the track listings speak for themselves.

ACETATES ON THE TRACKS VOL I (1962-65)

(3) All I Really Want To Do
(4) Mr. Tambourine Man
(5) You Don't Have To Do That
(6) Tombstone Blues, Tombstone Blues, Queen Jane Approximately

DEEP: A compilation of tracks from the Grogan and Gelston presented in outstanding sound quality. The only downside to this collection is that you may have this material elsewhere; the upside is that those sets are relatively difficult to find. The tracks, which are tastefully chosen and form a fine sampler for both newcomers to this material and hard core listeners. Overall, a fine collection. Thumbs up on this one.

CDG: A very nice compilation of very common material, in excellent sound quality.

ACETATES ON THE TRACKS VOL 2 (1965-74)

Treasure Records TRD-998 [T-524]

(1) Highway 61 Revisited sessions
(2) Columbia Records Studio A (New York, NY); October 25, 1965
(3) Columbia Records Studio A (New York, NY); November 30, 1965
(4) Columbia Records Studio A (New York, NY); January 21, 1966
(5) Columbia Records Studio B (New York, NY); May 1, 1970
(6) Planet Waves sessions

Tracklist: (1) Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window, Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window, Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window, Desolation Row, Ballad of A Thin Man, Ballad of A Thin Man
(2) I Wanna Be Your Lover, I Don't Wanna Be Your Partner
(3) Visions Of Johanna, Visions Of Johanna
(4) She's Your Lover Now
(5) Tomorrow Is A Long Time
(6) Nobody 'Cept You

DEEP: A superb follow-up in top notch quality, equivalent to the best previous CDs have had to offer (everything on here has been previously available). The upside is that many of the disks that offer these tracks are long out of print and near impossible to find. A wonderful collection of tracks. In any case, this one will certainly not disappoint.

CDG: An odd collection, not much more than an archival document. All the material can easily be found on other discs.

ACETATES ON THE TRACKS 3

Howlin Wolf BDAT03 [T-539]

Tracklist: Lily, Rosemary And The Jack Of Hearts (BOTT test pressing); Hazel (Last Waltz, 11/25/76); The Water Is Wide (Eric Clapton sessions, 3/30/76); Stop Now, Stop Now (Street Legal outtakes); Don't Ever Take Yourself Away (Shot Of Love outtake); Precious Angel, Saving Grace (San Francisco, November 6, 1979); Caribbean Wind (San Francisco, November 12, 1980); Ain't Gonna Go To Hell For Anybody (San Francisco, November 17, 1980); Magic (Shot Of Love worktape); Heart Of Mine (Shot Of Love outtake); Jokerman, Don't Fall Apart On Me Tonight (Infidels outtakes); Tangled Up In Blue (Renaldo And Clara, November 21, 1975 (evening)

DEEP: These tracks are not from acetates. Having said that, this is a collection of wildly unrelated but nicely selected tunes, presented (mostly) in chronological order. I believe many of the trax are available on other disks although the quality on here seems at least as good and, in some cases, better.

CDG: A weird compilation of some studio stuff (hardly any from acetates) and live tracks. Not really worth the trouble.

(11) Crazy Love (w/Van Morrison), And It Stoned Me (w/Van Morrison)
(12) I Believe In You
(13) Hazy Shade Of Winter (Belfort, FR 7/2/92 audience)

DEEP:The 4th volume in the inaptly named acetate series (only 1 and 2 were even partly acetate sourced), providing a motley assortment of cuts from various sources, including some live performances of rarely (if ever else) played tunes that are indeed the highlights of the set. I'll just add that the quality is exceptionally quite good throughout.

ACOUSTIC SET NYC 1963

Koine K890103 [T-109]

(1) Town Hall (New York, NY); April 12, 1963
(2) Adelphi Theatre (Dublin, Eire); May 5, 1966

Tracklist: (1) Ramblin' Down Through The World, Bob Dylan's Dream, Tomorrow Is A Long Time, Bob Dylan's New Orleans Rag, Walls Of Red Wing, Hero Blues, Who Killed Davey Moore
(2) It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Visions of Johanna, Fourth Time Around, Just Like a Woman

NOTE: Both the Dublin and New York tracks are reportedly in inferior sound quality. The disc replicates an early LP boot, "While The Establishment Burns," and may be a direct transfer from vinyl. Sometimes referred to as "Oldies But Goldies Live," but that title was used for the entire series of bootleg CDs of which this disc was one of the first releases.

(9) It's All Over Now Baby Blue
(10) Spanish Is The Loving Tongue
(11) It Ain't Me Babe
(12) Fourth Time Around

DEEP: This one makes you stand up and take notice. Not a casual listen, as the quality on some of the tracks, while always very listenable, requires your rapt attention. Do so, and find yourself wholly engrossed by the unique performances contained therein. This set showcases the solo Dylan at his most unique and adventurous best during the RTII tour and includes good quality versions of mainly rare, solo acoustic performances. Vintage color picture cover with snazzy design and killer Bob color pic on back cover. Essential listening.

ACOUSTIC TROUBADOUR

Vigotone 09 [T-102]

(1) Carnegie Chapter Hall (New York, NY); November 4, 1961 (line)
(2) Concert For Bangladesh (New York, NY); August 1, 1971 (afternoon) (line)

(2) Love Minus Zero, Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
(3) Idiot Wind, Lily Rosemary And The Jack Of Hearts

rmd: An excellent disc with a very cool cover. A very mixed bag, with 1961 performances of great historical interest plus bonus tracks in very nice quality. Good listening. (TJ)
This is a nice product -- the CD is pretty full, the sound is great and the packaging is attractive (despite errors in the track listing), including hand-colored black and white photos of Dylan, to good effect.

ACROSS THE BORDERLINE

Wild Wolf 2CD [T-673]

various European venues; spring 1999

Tracklist: You're Gonna Quit Me (4/8, Oporto); Trying To Get To Heaven (4/7, Lisbon); Fourth Time Around (4/13, Santander); Love Minus Zero (4/14, Madrid); Visions Of Johanna (4/18, Granada); Mr. Tambourine Man (4/25, Zurich); Desolation Row (4/27, Linz); One Too Many Mornings (4/9, Santiago de Compostela); Boots Of Spanish Leather (4/30, Vienna); Tomorrow Is A Long Time (4/11, San Sebastian); My Back Pages (4/27, Linz); Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll (4/18, Granada); Hallelujah I'm Ready To Go (6/12, Portland); God Knows (4/9, Santiago de Compostela); Just Like A Woman (4/7, Lisbon); Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues (4/14, Madrid); Not Dark Yet (4/27, Linz); Tough Mama (4/8, Oporto); What Good Am I (4/21, Zaragoza): Under The Red Sky, If Not For You, All Along The Watchtower (5/1, Ischgl); I Don't Believe You (5/2, Munich); Seņor (4/15, Valencia), Tombstone Blues (4/19, Murcia)

NOTE: This commercial CD set was cloned from the fan- circulated project "To Dance Beneath The German Sky.". Credit for its exceptional quality rests with its anonymous, unpaid compilers rather than the label which appropriated the material (and reportedly supplied an inaccurate sourcelist on the initial release).

DEEP: A "(bathed in a stream of) Pure Heat"-like compilation of rarely played, unique and/or occasionally transcendant performances from April and May 1999, which equals the aforementioned legendary set in some ways and eclipses it in others The tracks are superbly selected and provide an incredible listening experience from start to finish, smartly separated into acoustic and electric "sets." There's not a song that Dylan and band don't seriously invest themselves in, and the dividends pay off in some of the most startling and visceral performances in years. Quality is crystal clear and upfront, with every nuance of strum and voice loud and clear for maximum enjoyment. Awe-inspiring stuff. From top to bottom, an essential desert island collection that will wear out your player, smartly (and simply) packaged with color pics and eye-catching graphics and design.

rmd: I wholeheartedly disagree. While the sound quality is just great, many of the performances themselves are just not that good. Although very nice, this set does not come close to reaching the overall heights of "Pure Heat."
rmd: An excellent collection from the Spring '99 European Tour. Sound on the acoustic disc is consistently first-rate, but the electric disc is less uniform. Both acoustic and electric performances are consistently good, though Bob and the band sound a bit rusty on some of the rarer songs.

(2) Tears Of Rage
(3) Leopard-Skin Pillbox Hat (w/Neil Young)
(4) Seņor

DEEP: This set is a killer. The third and last night of the Roseland triad and, IMO, the best. Recording quality is outstanding. Dylan's performance runs the gamut from tender caress to gut kick, per usual. A rather unusual set list adds to the enjoyability factor. Neil and Bruce come out for raucous encores to close the deal. Clear and upfront vocals, distinct sound separation, great performance - can't ask for more than that. Bonus trax wrap things up nicely.

ALL HALLOWS EVE & MORE

Midnight Beat 079/080 [T-067]

(1)Philharmonic Hall (New York, NY); October 31, 1964 (line)
(2)Broadside Radio Broadcast (WBAI-FM, New York, NY); May 1962

Tracklist: (1) The Times They Are A-Changin', Spanish Harlem Incident, Talking John Birch Paranoid Blues, To Ramona, Who Killed Davey Moore?, Gates Of Eden, If You Gotta Go, Go Now, It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), I Don't Believe You, Mr. Tambourine Man, A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, Talking World War III Blues, Don't Think Twice, The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, *Mama You've Been On My Mind, *With God On Our Side, *It Ain't Me Babe, All I Really Want To Do (* duet with Joan Baez)
(2) Ballad Of Donald White, Death Of Emmett Till, Blowin' In The Wind (w/Pete Seeger et al)

DEEP: The quintessential Dylan concert up to that point in time, as important to 1964 as the Manchester broadcast is to 1965 or Guitars Kissing to 1966. The sound is much smoother, fuller and has more "punch" than previous CDs I've heard of this show. This one is pristine, with Dylan's voice more natural and the guitar/harmonica eliciting a much richer tone. Dylan at his early best - humorous, charming and witty in-between songs and strong, confident and defiant during them. As a bonus, you get the WBAI-FM "Broadside" radio show from '62 in superb quality. The double-jewel packaging is superb, with a classy black and gold color scheme and vintage Bob and Joan photos. Essential listening for everyone.

CDG: A classic performance in excellent quality, in part due to some digital filtering to remove tape hiss.

ALL I REALLY WANT TO DO

A Priory 1CD

To be avoided. This is a pirate disc repackaging classic studio tracks from the 1960s, usually selling at an inflated price.

(7) In The Garden
(8) Like A Rolling Stone, Knockin' On Heaven Door, Maggie's Farm

rmd: Sound on these disks is excellent, and while Dylan was untalkative during this period, he and GE Smith certainly cranked out the music. Some rare performances from this tour make this collection especially nice. (Anthony Kapolka)

ALMOST WENT TO SEE ELVIS

Cool Daddy [T-535]

Columbia Records Studio B (New York, NY); May 1, 1970

Tracklist: Ghost Riders In The Sky, Cupid, All I Have To Do Is Dream, Gates Of Eden, I Threw It All Away, I Don't Believe You, Matchbox, Your True Love, Las Vegas Blues, Fishing Blues (fragment), Honey Just Allow Me One More Chance, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, Song To Woody, Mama You Been On My Mind, Don't Think Twice [inst], Yesterday, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Da Doo Ron Ron, One Too Many Mornings [inst], One Too Many Mornings.

rmd: I like this a lot. Unusual track list, with a Nashville Skyline flavor. The sound quality is very nice.

ALWAYS DOWN THE ROAD

Arriba ARR 95.115 [T-493]

Voorst National (Brussels, Belgium); March 23, 1995

Tracklist: Down In The Flood, All Along The Watchtower, Tangled Up In Blue, If Not For You, Just Like A Woman, Queen Jane Approximately, Mr. Tambourine Man, Boots Of Spanish Leather, Don't Think Twice, Dignity, I And I, Like A Rolling Stone

rmd: A very good audience recording, but conversation can be heard during the acoustic set.

NOTE: This CD omits two tracks and scrambles the order of the performances.
"A Million Faces At My Feet" includes the entire show in superior sound.

ALWAYS ON MY MIND vol 1

Exclusive Series 011 1&2 [T-567]

(1) Michigan State Fairgrounds (Detroit, MI); August 29, 1994
(2) Zeltfestival (Konstanz, Germany); July 3, 1996

Tracklist: (1) Jokerman, If Not For You, All Along The Watchtower, Positively 4th Street, Tangled Up In Blue, Under The Red Sky, Mama You Been On My Mind, Masters Of War, One Too Many Mornings, God Knows, In The Garden, Maggie's Farm, Ballad Of A Thin Man, It Ain't Me Babe
(2) I'll Remember You, Everything Is Broken, Alabama Getaway, Times They Are A-Changin', Rainy Day Women #12 & 35

DEEP: This show is a pure joy to listen to. The sound is tremendous. Dylan's vocals jump out of the speakers in a real tour de force performance. The guitar playing, both acoustic and electric, is tremendous. And what a jolt to hear that harp again. Just a killer show all around with great sound!! The filler tracks are the last 5 cuts from the amazing Konstanz show and feature members of the Dave Matthews Band on all 5 cuts.

rmd: The sound is up front, with vocals prominent and crowd in the background, but the overall tone is a bit dry and flat, without much ambience. The performance is good, typical '94 with ups and downs.

ALWAYS ON MY MIND vol 2

Exclusive Series 012 [T-603]

Zeltfestival (Konstanz, Germany); July 3, 1996

Tracklist: Down In The Flood, I Want You, All Along The Watchtower, Shelter From The Storm, Watching The River Flow, Silvio, Mr. Tambourine Man, Masters Of War, One Too Many Mornings, Maggie's Farm

NOTE: The conclusion for this show is included on "Always On My Mind Vol. 1."

DEEP: The killer opening 10 tracks from the sensational Konstanz show. Easily one of the highlights of '96. Stately and elegant sounding, with much conviction. Excellent sound, upfront and true, every nuance and pluck intact. Astounding.

rmd: An excellent audience recording of a very good show.

AMERICAN DREAM

Red Phantom 1079 [T-193]

A Springsteen field recording, with two filler tracks, "Travelin' Band" and "I'm Crying," featuring Dylan (guitar only) and Springsteen at Tom Petty's March 1, 1990 LA Forum concert. More interestingly, the disc also includes Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, and Jackson Browne covering "Highway 61 Revisited" at the 1990 Christic Institute benefit concert.

ANAHEIM, CA, MARCH 10, 2000

unidentified label 1D

Sun Theater (Anaheim, CA); March 10, 2000 (early)

ANCIENT ODES

Watchtower WTP001/002 [T-511]

(1) Villa Manin (Udine, Italy); July 8, 1996
(2) Piazza Duomo (Pistoia, Italy); July 7, 1996

Tracklist: (1) Down In The Flood, Se¤or, All Along The Watchtower, You're A Big Girl Now, Most Likely You Go Your Way, Silvio, Mr Tambourine Man, Masters Of War, Don't Think Twice, Jokerman, I Shall Be Released, Obviously 5 Believers, My Back Pages, Like A Rolling Stone, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35
(2) Shake Sugaree, Tangled Up In Blue, Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, To Ramona

DEEP: At the normal bass/treble levels, this set sounds like it was recorded either underwater or with the mics down someone's pants. I took the trouble to sift through so much mud that my stereo levels read negative 10 on the bass and plus 10 on the treble. Much to my surprise, what remained was the much crisper and sharper sounding voice of Mr. Bob and instrumental accompaniment that, while not breathtaking in its definition, was more than passable, with a little hiss. My eq was looking like a 45 degree angle. Sounded damned good, though, especially from the other room. The show is a real corker; the song structure and tempo is a bit different than normal and the energy is high. Perhaps you don't want to go through the extra effort to "get it" but it's rewarding if you do.

CDG: While Dylan's performance is excellent, both the source recording and the CD mastering are inferior.

THE ANNIVERSARY CONCERT

Imtrat 920.040 [T-248]

(2) All Along The Watchtower, Boots Of Spanish Leather, Across The Borderline, Answer Me, Shake Rattle And Roll

rmd: Very good sound, pretty well-balanced with upfront vocals, but a bit compressed. The performance is mostly hit or miss; rough, to be sure.

(2) Don't Think Twice, Lenny Bruce, Positively 4th Street

DEEP: The crown jewel of audience recordings. Do yourself a favor and cop a tape of it from someone.

CDG: The cd that beats them all.

EDLIS: Both "Apollo Landing" and "The Illusion Of Time" are in excellent sound, with a little audience noise in the background. The source tapes are quite distinct, with "Apollo Landing" being more upfront, although some of the instruments are louder and a little harsher.

rmd: Better than "The Illusion Of Time"; it was apparently recorded closer to the stage and includes bonus tracks from the night before. (MZ)

Tracklist: (1) Most Likely You Go Your Way, Lay Lady Lay, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, It Ain't Me Babe, Ballad Of A Thin Man [Dylan/Band]; Stage Fright, King Harvest, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, When You Awake, I Shall Be Released, Up On Cripple Creek [Band]; All Along The Watchtower, Ballad Of Hollis Brown, Knockin' On Heaven's Door [Dylan/Band]; Endless Highway, The Shape I'm In, The Weight [Band]; Forever Young, Highway 61 Revisited, Like A Rolling Stone [Dylan/Band]

rmd: Not recommended. The sound quality is not that good; far superior tapes of the rough mix circulate.

NOTE: The CD packaging incorrectly lists "Hollis Brown" as "Highway 61 Revisited."

DEEP: Not since "(bathed in a stream of) PURE HEAT" have more uniquely sublime Dylan performances been gathered together in one place. The quality is stunning, to say the least; crystal clear, upfront sound, every quirk and rasp of those glorious pipes ringing true in all their raging glory, every pluck, strum, bash and cymbal hit burning through with astounding clarity, and even some sorely missed harp thrown in for good measure. Perhaps the ultimate live collection to date. Includes the usual, classy full color, multi-page booklets and gorgeous photos.

rmd: While the Globe concert is magnificent in every respect, the filler tracks are less reliable, both in performance and in sound. Overall, though, I've never heard a better field recording.(AD)

AT THE SPECTRUM 1974

Amsterdam 838 [T-612]

Spectrum (Philadelphia, PA); January 6, 1974 (afternoon)

Tracklist: Ballad Of Hollis Brown, Lay Lady Lay, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, It Ain't Me Babe, Tough Mama, Ballad Of A Thin Man, All Along The Watchtower, Leopard-Skin Pillbox Hat, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, To Ramona, Mama You Been On My Mind, Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll, Nobody 'Cept You, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), I Don't Believe You, Forever Young, Something There Is About You, Like A Rolling Stone

NOTE: The packaging for this set includes an incorrect date and an inaccurate tracklist.

DEEP: Surprisingly, a worthwhile 1974 audience recording in decent quality. While not up to current quality standards, an enjoyable set with some rarely offered tunes. Two listed tracks -- "As I Went Out One Morning" and" Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands" -- are not included, of course. Nicely housed in a color, glossy slipcase, as are most Japanese disks these days.

AT THE WAREHOUSE

NOTE: "Diamonds And Rust" is often reported incorrectly as "Isis"; that track survives only as a fragment, and is not included on this disc.

DEEP: Both Atlantic City February 1999 shows, complete, on two disks in "just shy of excellent" audience quality but by no means from the mixing desk. Both performances are quite good, the sound is there and it's a shame that Dylan chose not to be a little more adventurous with the set list, despite including a few gems. A worthwhile addition to the live canon.

rmd: Not that great, really. For the first show, the sound is fairly upfront and clear but nothing to get excited about. The performance has some moments of inspiration, but on the whole the standard setlist and exhausted singer add up to "just another night on the road." The late show has the better setlist and performances, but the sound is overcooked and fuzzy. (BC)

NOTE: The label's claim that these are line recordings "from the mixing desk" is plainly false.

AVIGNON

Moonlight 9517/18 [T-475]

Palace Des Sports (Avignon, France); July 25, 1981

Tracklist: Saved, I Believe In You, Like A Rolling Stone, 'Till I Get It Right*, Man Gave Names To All The Animals, Maggie's Farm, Girl From The North Country, Ballad Of A Thin Man, In The Summertime, Shot Of Love, Walk Around Heaven All Day*, The Times They Are A-Changin', Let's Begin, Lenny Bruce, Slow Train, Solid Rock, Just Like A Woman, Saved By The Grace Of Your Love*, Watered Down Love, Jesus Is The One, Heart Of Mine, When You Gonna Wake Up, Forever Young, In The Garden, Blowin' In The Wind, It Ain't Me Babe, Knockin' On Heaven's Door (* not Dylan)

DEEP: The complete circulating soundboard tape (not quite the whole show) presented in excellent quality. Sound here is clear and well balanced, with the vocals right up front, and Dylan's performance is very energetic and forceful. His voice takes on added nuances and expression, which only adds to the quality of the show. Preferable to me are the acoustic and sparser sounding numbers; the subtleties are sometimes lost in the "wall of sound" arrangement employed on a lot of the "louder" songs, although Dylan's charismatic vocals never fail to cut through the busy mix. Fred Tackett does some fine work on guitar and the back-up singers, while annoying in some places, are well suited to some of the arrangements on this tour. Overall, an excellent set. The packaging is timely and decent but won't win any awards.

AWAY FROM THE PAST
Scorpio 2CD

(1) Colston Hall (Bristol, UK); May 10, 1966
(2) Denver Hotel Tape (Denver, CO); March 13, 1966
(3) Syria Mosque (Pittsburgh, PA); February 6, 1966
(4) De Montfort Hall (Leicester, UK); May 15, 1966

(1) She Belongs To Me, Fourth Time Around, Visions of Johanna, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Desolation Row, Just Like A Woman, Mr. Tambourine Man, Tell Me Momma, I Don't Believe You, Baby Let Me Follow You Down, Tom Thumb's Blues, Leopardskin PillBox Hat, One Too Many Mornings, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Like A Rolling Stone
(2) Positively Van Gogh, Don't Tell Him, If You Want My Love, Just Like A Woman, Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands
(3) Positively Fourth Street, Love Minus Zero
(4) Mr. Tambourine Man

rmd: Overall, this a decent set, though it looks like Scorpio really struggled to find adequate material. And while these recordings are described as the most "listenable" audience recordings from the tour, that statement is misleading. The sound is what one would expect from a 1960s audience recording: distant, scratchy, and unprofessional. As always, the elaborate packaging is excellent, in the same style slipcase as GL66. Perhaps this set is best for the 1966 completists out there.
