(5) Quest TV broadcast (Toronto, ON); February 1, 1964
(6) Finjan Club (Montreal, QU); July 2, 1962

Tracklist: (1) I Don't Believe You, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
(2) Talking World War III Blues, Girl From The North Country
(3) Baby Let Me Follow You Down
(4) Mr. Tambourine Man
(5) Restless Farewell, Times They Are A-Changin'
(6) Still A Fool, Rocks And Gravel, Quit Your Low Down Ways

rmd: Sound quality is generally not great.

NOTE: To be avoided. Almost half the material has been officially released, and the Quest and Finjan tracks are incomplete versions of tapes which circulate commonly in complete form, as well as superior sound quality. Several CDs recycling and reshuffling the same material, sometimes with slight variations, almost always with tracklist errors, have been issued.

(2) Wolf Trap (Vienna, VA); August 24, 1997 (line)

Tracklist: (1) Absolutely Sweet Marie, Man In The Long Black Coat, Tough Mama, Under The Red Sky, Silvio, Stone Walls And Steel Bars, Mr Tambourine Man, Memphis Blues Again, Blind Willie McTell, Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat, Like A Rolling Stone, Don't Think Twice, Alabama Getaway
(2) Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You, You Ain't Goin' Nowhere, Roving Gambler, Cocaine Blues, Watching The River Flow
(3) It's All Over Now Baby Blue, This Wheel's On Fire

DEEP: A high-energy, charismatic and fun-filled show with some of the best Bob vocals you'll ever hear and a thrilling, sympathetic band that plays the hell out of everything, and plays it well. Well-rounded quality from the bottom up and clear, crisp vocals that will bring you to tears. The highest recommendation I can give is this: You wanna hear what Bob Dylan and his band sound like? This is how they sound.

rmd: This show sounds absolutely spectacular. The instruments are all clear and crisp, the vocals are up front where they should be, and the performance is dead on. The only criticism I have so far is that occasionally the levels will fluctuate momentarily, but this is a very small qualm.

BANJO TAPE & TOWN HALL 1963

Yellow Dog 058 [T-452]

(1) Gerdes Folk City (New York, NY); February 8, 1963
(2) Town Hall (New York, NY); April 12, 1963

Tracklist: (1) Lonesome River Edge, Back Door Blues, Bob Dylan's Dream, You Can Get Her, Farewell, All Over You, Masters Of War, Instrumental, Keep Your Hands Off Her, Honey Babe, Goin' Back To Rome, Stealin'
(2) Ramblin' Through The World, Bob Dylan's Dream, Tomorrow Is A Long Time, Bob Dylan's New Orleans Rag, Masters Of War, Walls Of Red Wing, Hero Blues, Who Killed Davey Moore?, With God On Our Side.

DEEP: Very good sound on 12 full and abbreviated songs on the Banjo Tape, a very informal session. Lots of never recorded gems. The April 12 trax are found in better sound on the Capricorn
"In Concert 1963," though still good here. Some nice period photos of Bob. If you like the early stuff, you'll like this. Recommended.

BAREFOOT POETESS

Midnight Beat 086/087 2CD [T-579]

This Patti Smith includes as the two Dylan/Smith duets from the December 17, 1995 Electric Factory show in Philadelphia: "Dark Eyes" and "Knockin' On Heaven's Door." The principal content is a line recording of Smith's August 1, 1996 performance in Hamburg, Germany.

(bathed in a stream of) PURE HEAT

QRecords 17/18 [T-551]

Tracklist: (all 1997) Not Fade Away (Hartford, CT, 4/19); Pretty Peggy-O (Albany, NY, 4/18); You Ain't Goin' Nowhere (Huntsville, AL, 5/3); Every Grain Of Sand (Bangor, ME, 4/9); Pledging My Time (Indiana, PA, 4/22); O Babe It Ain't No Lie (Durham, NH, 4/11); Friend of the Devil (Providence, RI, 4/17); John Brown (Northampton, MA); 4/15); Viola Lee Blues (Sapporo, Japan, 2/24); Roving Gambler (Hartford, CT, 4/19); Desolation Row (Moncton, NB, 4/5); Stone Walls And Steel Bars (Beverly Hills, CA, 5/21); Love Minus Zero (Bangor, ME, 4/9); Wicked Messenger, Shooting Star (Indiana, PA, 4/22); Long Black Veil (Wheeling, WV, 4/28); Born In Time (Wayne, NJ, 4/13); You're A Big Girl Now (Providence, RI, 4/17); This Wheel's On Fire (West Long Branch, NJ, 4/20); Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (Portland, ME, 4/10); My Back Pages (Utica, NY, 4/24)

DEEP: Flat out, this is easily the finest and most awe-inspiring compilation of Dylan performances ever assembled, bar none. Think of a dream show without the usuals, then think of the best performances of the rarely-played, the debuts and the one-off performances. Add to this top-notch quality which consistently delivers from the opening track until the end with not a dud among them. Then, sequence them in a way that puts together a dream show so they flow together perfectly. The sum of what you get is a package that is a true testament to Bob Dylan's genius as an artist and a performer and establishes the current band as the finest and most versatile of all the ones he's worked with. The sheer magic of these Spring 1997 performances is incredible, from the vocals, the harp playing, the instrumentation, everything. The last track, "My Back Pages" with Larry Campbell on violin, is a stunning and beautiful climax to a Holy Grail-like set of performances. Play this for your friends who aren't Dylan fans and don't be surprised if they become converts. This was obviously a labor of love for someone.

CDG: Generally acknowledged as one o the best Dylan live compilations.

(2) What Good Am I, Man Of Peace, Queen Jane Approximately, Everything Is Broken, Masters Of War
(3) Precious Memories, Simple Twist Of Fate, Memphis Blues Again, Like A Rolling Stone

DEEP: A 14-track compilation from the 1988 Beacon residency presented in decent but not excellent quality. A well chosen selection of electric tracks, including some rarely played NET tunes. Some careless editing between tracks destroys any continuity, and Wanted Man has chosen not to list the dates for each. Performances are standard for electric '89 material. All in all a rather average set. At least the disk is full.

(3) Universal Amphitheater (Los Angeles, CA); June 7, 1978

Tracklist: (1) Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (inst), Love her With A Feeling, Baby Stop Crying, Mr. Tambourine Man, Shelter From The Storm, Love Minus Zero, Tangled Up In Blue, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Maggie's Farm, Going Going Gone
(2) Girl From The North Country, Ballad Of A Thin Man
(3) You're A Big Girl Now, One More Cup Of Coffee, Blowin' In The Wind, I Want You, Seņor, Masters of War, Just Like A Woman, Don't Think Twice, Simple Twist Of Fate, Oh Sister, All Along The Watchtower, All I Really Want To Do, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), Forever Young, Times They Are A-Changin'

DEEP: While the sound is not upfront and in your face, Dylan's vocals shine through very clear and the instruments are all there, if not full-bodied. Dylan sings the drastically re-arranged tunes them with a certain gusto and the band performs with equal aplomb. If you can get by the flute and the saxes, there is much to offer from this performance. Dylan's singing, phrasing, the guitar playing, the back-up singers, blues, reggae backbeats are all on fine display. But Watchtower drops (among others) the final two tracks, substituting the closing songs from a 1994 show. Generic cover design.

CDG: Not particularly recommended. The show is very nice, but the sound quality isn't very good.

Dandelion DL 105 [T-656]

(1) Shot Of Love worktape

Tracklist: (1) Is It Worth It, High Away [Ah Ah Ah Ah], Hallelujah [Yes Sir, No Sir], It's Magic, Child To Me, Wind Blowing On The Water, All The Way Down, My Oriental Home, (We're Living On) Borrowed Time, I Want You To Know I Love You, Rockin' Boat, Movin' [Wait And See], Almost Persuaded, Don't Ever Take Yourself Away, Mystery Train
(2) Heart Of Mine, Watered Down Love, Shot Of Love

DEEP: Newly circulating outtakes from March-May 1981, presented in excellent quality. A very interesting listen with (mainly) fully realized tunes and a couple of instrumentals. Beautifully presented with a stunning cover, 12 page color, glossy booklet and thoughtful essay. Not for everyone..... Crazy Joe said it best, something to the effect of it being "unessentially essential," or something like that.

rmd: A highly recommended set. Most of the tracks are only works-in-progress, with neither melody or lyrics entirely worked out, never meant for release in this form. Many of these unfinished songs show real promise. They are fascinating, and give a behind-the-scenes look at what went down in the studio at the time.

NOTE: Reportedly in better quality than the common circulating tape, but not as complete. A 2-CDR fan project with the same title circulates, and is probably more complete.

(2) All Along The Watchtower, Just Like A Woman, Highway 61 Revisited, Seeing The Real You At Last, Forever Young (w/Bruce Springsteen)
(3) Restless Farewell

DEEP: An outstanding Japanese release containing the complete broadcast portion of Bob's set from the Prince's Trust Concert in magnificent quality. Bob blisters through with unbridled energy and clear, precise vocal flair. The quality is perfect and Bob is in excellent voice. The R&R HOF trax are found in better quality elsewhere, while the "Restless Farewell" on this collection is in pristine, crystal clear quality. Unlike a lot of Japanese releases, this one is stunning with gorgeous color covers and interesting graphics.

ISIS: Recording quality is superb and Bob is in great form, but of course nowhere near the complete Hyde Park show. A collection of tracks better used as filler. A good disc if you haven't already got most of the material elsewhere.

NOTE:Reportedly cloned from the fan project "London, England 6/29/81."

DEEP: A terrific addition to the well-documented Europe '81 tour, standing proudly alongside Avignon. A pretty amazing audience recording that leaves nothing to the imagination, with upfront vocals and distinct instrumentation, easily the finest '81 audience recording of the '81 tour that I can recall. A tour de force performance from Dylan and band, notable for Dylan's fervent deliveries and vocal gymnastics. A real keeper, nicely packaged.

rmd: A beautiful audience recording of a stunning show. Simply amazing stuff throughout; even the ordinarily lame stuff is redeemed. The audience is remarkably non-talkative. The artwork is also quite attractive.

(2) You're A Big Girl Now, Idiot Wind
(3) Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall

DEEP: A complete and much improved recording of the Oklahoma City soundboard tape, although not up to the standards we've come to expect from boards these days. The sound, in fact, fits the event, giving it a mangy kind of dust-bowl and tumbleweed type vibe. The unique Desire sound is captured on stage, running the gamut from the raunchy rock blues of "Maggie's Farm" to the soul-searching, almost plaintive "Going Going Gone," from the mystical sound of "Isisquot; to the countrified and jaunty "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go." Just listen..... oh, and the filler.

rmd: Highly, highly recommended. Not quite up to the standard of "Hold The Fort (For What It's Worth," the definitive 1976 disc, but a very close second -- and several of the individual tracks are better!

BLOOD ON THE ACETATES

unidentified label 3D

This appears to be a CDR compilation, offered principally if not exclusively through Internet auction sites, including the first three volumes from the

BLOOD ON THE OUTTRACKS

Magic Mushroom 002 1D

Columbia Records Studio A (New York, NY); September 1974

Tracklist: Tangled Up In Blue, You're A Big Girl Now, Idiot Wind, Lily Rosemary And The Jack Of Hearts, If You See Her Say Hello, Shelter From The Storm, Up To Me, Tangled Up In Blue, Call Letter Blues, Idiot Wind, If You See Her Say Hello

NOTE: Not recommended. This disc apparently compiles all of the circulating outtakes and alternate takes from BOTT, pirating most of its tracks from official releases.

BLOOD ON THE TAPES

Columbus COL 2-1070 [T-520]

Columbia Records Studio A (New York, NY); September 1974

Tracklist: If You See Her Say Hello, Lily, Rosemary And The Jack Of Hearts, Call Letter Blues, Idiot Wind, Tangled Up In Blue [9/16/74]; You're A Big Girl Now, Shelter From the Storm [9/17/74]; If You See Her Say Hello, Tangled Up In Blue, Up To Me [9/19/74]

DEEP: The 11 circulating BOTT outtakes all together on one CD is certainly a welcome addition to anyone's collection. Tastily compiled in the order they were recorded and presented in official release quality (because most of the songs are pirated from official releases, and the others are from the initial test pressing). Although most Dylan fans will already own at least the 7 tracks on official releases, it's nice to have them all in one place. A masterpiece in its own right, scraping buttons and all. Perhaps come 1999, Sony will give us this and more on the 25th anniversary bonus disks of "The Complete Blood on the Tracks Sessions."

ISIS: The complete circulating outtakes, for the most part in absolutely pristine quality. Brought together like this they form a formidable body. The outtakes provide insight into the development of the songs towards their final unsurpassable incarnations. It's captivating to hear the sharp edge of pain rising a little closer to the surface.

BLOOD ON THE TRACKS - NEW YORK SESSIONS

Scorpio 1CD [T-556]

Columbia Records Studio A (New York, NY); September 1974

Tracklist: Tangled Up In Blue, Simple Twist Of Fate, You're A Big Girl Now, Idiot Wind, You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go, Meet Me In The Morning, Lily Rosemary And The Jack Of Hearts, If You See Her Say Hello. Shelter From The Storm, Buckets Of Rain

DEEP: The legendary album as it was originally intended to be heard. Carefully mastered off a clean, original test pressing, it has never sounded better. This is a dynamic listening experience; the only way to describe it is to say it's like listening in 3-D, far superior to what was previously available. A beautifully done package, including two rare and contemporaneous photos gracing a booklet with the original, Grammy Award winning Pete Hamill essay, plus some nice original artwork.

rmd: Great, stupendous, wonderful, magical, etc. Only upon listening to this disc can one appreciate the original BOTT. The sound is spectacular -- warm, crisp, clear, and possessing a unity of "feel" which the Biograph/Bootleg Series mixes do not.

BLOOD ON THE TRACKS - NEW YORK SESSIONS & Sound 80 Masters

unidentified label 1CD

(1) Columbia Records Studio A (New York, NY); September 1974
(2) Sound 80 Studios (Minneapolis, MN); December 1974 (half-speed masters)

Tracklist: (1) Tangled Up In Blue, Simple Twist Of Fate, You're A Big Girl Now, Idiot Wind, You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go, Meet Me In The Morning, Lily Rosemary And The Jack Of Hearts, If You See Her Say Hello, Shelter From The Storm, Buckets Of Rain
(2) Tangled Up In Blue, You're A Big Girl Now, Idiot Wind, If You See Her Say Hello

DEEP: A reissue of sorts, with four Sound 80 Studios tracks appended to the original NYC versions. The Sound 80 tracks - are sourced from a half speed master and sound terrific. All the talk about being mastered at the correct speed and pitch, well, you'll have to decide for yourself. They do sound awfully true, though. Packaging remains as originally issued, with a note on the added tracks attached.

NOTE: This is perilously close to being a pirate edition of BOTT with bonus tracks, omitting only one song from the official release (although some of the official tracks are represented by variant releases). Therefore, not recommended.

CDG: High sound quality, capturing the "cold" tone and timbre you often find at open air festivals.

BLOWN OUT ON THE TRAIL

Moontunes 019/20 [T-073]

(1) Jones Beach (Wantaugh, NY); June 30, 1988 (line)
(2) Bridge Benefit (Oakland, CA); December 4, 1988(line)
(3) New York State Fairgrounds (Syracuse, NY); August 31, 1988

Tracklist: (1) Subterranean Homesick Blues, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, You're A Big Girl Now, Tangled Up In Blue, Masters Of War, I Shall Be Released, Memphis Blues Again, Lakes Of Pontchartrain, A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, Eileen Aroon, Boots of Spanish Leather, Silvio, Gates of Eden, Like A Rolling Stone, The Times They Are A Changin', All Along The Watchtower, Maggie's Farm
(2) San Francisco Bay Blues, Pretty Boy Floyd, With God On Our Side, Girl From The North Country, Gates of Eden, Forever Young
(3) I'll Remember You, Every Grain Of Sand, Don't Think Twice, One Too Many Mornings, Barbara Allen

DEEP: The Jones Beach performance is presented here in its entirety (previous versions omitted two tracks). Dylan's performance is on the money and the quality is excellent, with vocals clear and upfront and the music nicely separated and distinct. This one ranks right up there with the Radio City show.
For Dylan's exceptional Bridge Benefit performance, the board quality is somewhat disappointing, although very good and thoroughly listenable. Nevertheless, the performances here are all on the money. Some very well chosen tracks from Syracuse complete the set: Nice quality, too. Full disks, beautiful color artwork, overall good sound and rare performances add up to a real keeper. Highly recommended.

CDG: Excellent soundboard tape of an excellent show. The filler is very good too.

(2) Orpheum Theatre (Boston, MA); October 9, 1994

Tracklist: (1) Jokerman, All Along The Watchtower, Queen Jane Approximately, Tangled Up In Blue, Most Likely You Go Your Way, Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, Masters Of War, Don't Think Twice, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Highway 61 Revisited, In the Garden, Maggie's Farm, Ballad Of A Thin Man, It Ain't Me Babe
(2) You're A Big Girl Now, One Too Many Mornings, Two Soldiers
(3) Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, Highway 61 Revisited (w/Springsteen and Young)

DEEP: One of the best releases of 1995.

rmd: Breathtaking! The performance is inspired and serves as a great indication of exactly what Dylan was up to in late 94. The quality is crystal clear and Bob's delicate vocals are up front and handled with care. The setlist is remarkable, and the filler is great. They don't get much better than this.

BOB & JERRY

BAJ 1 3CD [T-034]

(1) Robert F. Kennedy Stadium (Washington, DC); June 25, 1995
(2) Warfield Theater (San Francisco, CA); November 16, 1980

Tracklist: (1) Drifter's Escape, Watching The River Flow, All Along The Watchtower, Simple Twist Of Fate, Silvio, Mama You Been On My Mind, Desolation Row, One Too Many Mornings, Maggie's Farm, What Good Am I, Like A Rolling Stone, It Takes A Lot To Laugh, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35
(2) Gotta Serve Somebody, I Believe In You, Like A Rolling Stone, Keep On Falling In Love, Man Gave Names To All The Animals, To Ramona, Walking Around Heaven All Day, Abraham Martin And John, Let's Keep It Between Us, Mary From The Wild Moor, Covenant Woman, Solid Rock, Just Like A Woman, Señor, Simple Twist Of Fate, The Groom's Still Waiting At The Altar

DEEP: An attempt to package Jerry's first and last appearances with Bob in one set. The RFK show has been released elsewhere, so all I'll add is that the quality here is even better, the sound being a tad crisper and brighter on the high ends w/a bit less of an audience recording feel. The other half presents the whole show from the Warfield, Jerry's first guest appearance w/Bob. It's an average audience recording with the sound a bit hollow and flat, though listenable. I don't think this will see much time in my player, since half of this show is available as a soundboard in damned good quality and includes all of Garcia's guest slot. Still, a nice document to have and the only place to get the '80 show in its entirety. Once again, too, the RFK is special.

CDG: The 1995 show is in wonderful sound quality. The 1980 one is just decent, though I prefer this complete audience tape to the incomplete soundboard that is more commonly available.

DEEP: What first appeared as a rather pedestrian set on sight ended up being a very, very enjoyable listen. Dylan sounds focused and committed at this show, and the band is as good as ever. Quality, is excellent, vocals and instruments in the fore. I highly recommend it!!

NOTE: This CD set also reportedly includes a performance of "Watching The River Flow" from an unidentified show.

(4) Señor, Not Dark Yet, Tomorrow Is A Long Time, Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, Tangled Up In Blue, Million Miles, Tears of Rage, Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat, Like A Rolling Stone, Forever Young, Love Sick, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35

DEEP: Recording quality is consistently good throughout the four shows. In my estimation, the recording seems to improve with each listen - the vocals, most importantly, are upfront and full of the rasp, roar and tender touches that need to be heard to fully appreciate Bob's singing. The instrumentation is well balanced and clearly defined. A real treat to listen to - warm, smooth and cozy with not a hint of harshness. Mention must be made of the first class packaging - the front cover pic of the whole band on stage is brilliant and graphics are top notch. Other pics of Times Square with Bob on the big screen and the New York City skyline with the Brooklyn Bridge in the foreground add a touch more class to an already top-notch release.

This disc appears to be one of several variations of the DV More "Bob Dylan Live" [T-151]; and the track listed as "Blowin' In The Wind" may well be " Troubled And I Don't Know Why." Although the disc was supposedly issued in 1993 (claiming to be of Italian origin), it apparently does not have a T-number. . Tracklist: (1) I'll Keep It With Mine, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Subterranean Homesick Blues, Farewell Angelina, You Don't Have To Do That, She Belongs To Me, Love Minus Zero, If You Gotta Go Go Now, If You Gotta Go Go Now, If You Gotta Go Go Now, If You Gotta Go Go Now.
(2) I'll Keep It With Mine (instr.)
(3) It's All Over Now Baby Blue, interview, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)

DEEP: Quality is excellent throughout, comparing favorably to other unofficial releases, except the official ones, of course. Fine quality sound on the Crane performances and interview.

DISK TWO

Civic Auditorium (Santa Monica, CA); March 27, 1965

Tracklist: To Ramona, Gates Of Eden, If You Gotta Go Go Now, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), Love Minus Zero/No Limit, Mr Tambourine Man, Don't Think Twice, With God On Our Side, She Belongs To Me, It Ain't Me Babe, The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, All I Really Want To Do, It's All Over Now, Baby Blue

DEEP: 13 tracks cloned from
"Songs That Made Him Famous" (which had 5 bonus trax). Sound quality is listenable but annoying. I know the historians will say any Dylan 1965 show on tape is important, but it is the standard show/setlist, and the Manchester Trade Hall is much better.

(2) The Times They Are A-Changin', To Ramona (Sheffield. 4/30); Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll (Leicester, 5/2); Lost Highway, I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry (Savoy Hotel, 5/3-4); Little Things (Newcastle hotel, 5/6); Don't Think Twice (Newcastle, 5/6); It's All Over Now Baby Blue (Savoy Hotel, 5/8); instrumental improvisation, The Times They Are A-Changin', Talkin' World War III Blues, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), Gates Of Eden; Love Minus Zero, All I Really Wanna Do (London, 5/9)
(3) Miami Sales Message, If You Gotta Go Go Now

DEEP: Sheffield is lame quality, distant, historical significance be damned. The rest of the disk contains interviews/press conferences from the 1965 tour and the complete live and backstage performances found in Don't Look Back, all in excellent quality. Great to have it all in one place and in such good quality.

DISK FOUR

Free Trade Hall (Manchester, UK); May 7, 1965

Tracklist: The Times They Are A-Changin, To Ramona, Gates Of Eden, If You Gotta Go Go Now, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), Love Minus Zero/No Limit, Mr Tambourine Man, Talking World War III Blues, Don't Think Twice, With God On Our Side, She Belongs To Me, It Ain't Me Babe, The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, All I Really Want To Do, It's All Over Now, Baby Blue

DEEP: Absolutely essential show, available on several other releases in comparable, perhaps identical sound. If you don't get this box, do grab one of the other disks. The definitive '65 acoustic Dylan best quality available.

DISK FIVE

Royal Albert Hall (London, UK); May 9, 1965

Tracklist: The Times They Are A-Changin, To Ramona, Gates Of Eden, If You Gotta Go Go Now, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), Love Minus Zero/No Limit, Mr Tambourine Man, Talking World War III Blues, Don't Think Twice, With God On Our Side, She Belongs To Me, It Ain't Me Babe, The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, All I Really Want To Do, It's All Over Now, Baby Blue

DEEP: Same setlist as Manchester, but in barely listenable quality. More a curiosity piece.

DISK SIX
BBC TV (London, UK); June 1, 1965

Tracklist: Ballad Of Hollis Brown, Mr Tambourine Man, Gates Of Eden, If You Gotta Go Go Now, The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll, It Ain't Me Babe, Love Minus Zero, One Too Many Mornings, Boots Of Spanish Leather, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), She Belongs To Me, It's All Over Now Baby Blue.

DEEP: A great performance previously available on "The Circus Is In Town"; while the sound qaulity differs, it is hard to say which is better. The sound on here has a bit more hiss but appears more natural. Anyway, you need to have one or the other, if not a tape.

DISK SEVEN

Highway 61 Revisited sessions (New York, NY); June 15 - July 31, 1965

Tracklist: Sitting On A Barbed Wire Fence (mono), Sitting On A Barbed Wire Fence (stereo), Sitting On A Barbed Wire Fence (stereo acetate), Phantom Engineer (mono), Phantom Engineer (stereo acetate), Phantom Engineer (stereo), Like A Rolling Stone (stereo); Like A Rolling Stone (mono), Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? (mono), Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? (mono), Positively 4th Street (mono), It Takes A Lot To Laugh (mono), Tombstone Blues (mono), From A Buick 6, From A Buick 6, From A Buick 6 (3:12)

DEEP: Mono, stereo, and/or acetate versions of familiar material. A few of the acetate versions sound the same as the mono and/or stereo mixes, so you are sometimes getting the same take from a different source. Quality is excellent throughout. Many of these versions are found on other releases. A worthwhile disk, though I find it hard listening to 4 takes of a song in succession.

DISK EIGHT

(1) Highway 61 Revisited sessions (New York, NY); August 2, 1965
(2) Newport Folk Festival (Newport, RI); July 24-25, 1965

Tracklist: (1) Desolation Row, Queen Jane Approximately, Highway 61 Revisited, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
(2) All I Really Want To Do, Maggie's Farm, Like A Rolling Stone, Phantom Engineer, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Mr. Tambourine Man

DEEP: Five excellent quality mono mixes available elsewhere. Quality here is excellent; "Desolation Row" is markedly different in this incarnation and has to be heard. So exhaustively reviewed I won't bother to comment other than to say that the quality here is up to snuff, which is to say very, very, good.

DISK NINE

Forest Hills (New York, NY); August 28, 1965

Tracklist: She Belongs To Me, To Ramona, Gates Of Eden, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Desolation Row, Love Minus Zero/No Limit, Mr. Tambourine Man, Tombstone Blues, I Don't Believe You, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues

DEEP: I call this the curiosity piece of this set, much like the Elephant Man's bones. Cool to check out once or twice, but beyond that not very fulfilling. Quality is dire, though I hesitate to say unlistenable. The sound is really bad and hard to enjoy, so let's put it in the "historical significance only" category.

DISK TEN

(1) Forest Hills (New York, NY); August 28, 1965
(2) Hawks sessions (New York, NY); October 5 - November 30, 1965

Tracklist: (1) From A Buick Six, Maggie's Farm, It Ain't Me Babe, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Like A Rolling Stone
(2) Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window, Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window, I Wanna Be Your Lover, Jet Pilot, Medicine Sunday, Number One, Freeze Out

DEEP: The Hawks sessions are in excellent quality, with multiple takes and variant mixes, same quality to these ears as what is previously been available. Disk ten is a winner.

DISKS ELEVEN & TWELVE

(1) Allen Stone interview (Detroit, MI); October 24, 1965
(2) Nat Hentoff (unpublished) Playboy interview (New York, NY); October or November 1965

DEEP: Excellent quality interviews, revealing, playful, fun to listen to, no doubt. As cool as these are, how often are you gonna play 'em? A good listen, once, but better to have it in print to refer back to for specific quotes.

DISK THIRTEEN

(1) KQED Studios Press Conference (San Francisco, CA); December 3, 1965
(2) Berkeley Community Theater (Berkeley, CA); December 4, 1965

Tracklist: (1) press conference
(2) Tombstone Blues, I Don't Believe You, Baby Let Me Follow You Down

DISK FOURTEEN

(1) Berkeley Community Theater (Berkeley, CA); December 4, 1965
(2) Columbia press conference (Los Angeles, CA); December 16, 1965

Tracklist: (1) Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Long Distance Operator, It Ain't Me Babe, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Positively Fourth Street, Like A Rolling Stone
(2) press conference

DEEP: The press conferences are hilarious, vintage BD. Play it for your friends!! The classic tape from December 4is not great quality, but oh so listenable; to my ears the same quality as found on "Long Distance Operator." The Hawks cook up a sizzling brew, white hot flame on top of BDs scorching vocals. The press conferences serve as nice bookends to the show.

DEEP: So, is it worth it you ask? Most of this material is available on other CDs in the same quality. Granted, there are a few takes of some outtakes which may appear here for the first time, but the "first-time on CD" release of Forest Hills, RAH '65, Newcastle '65 does not warrant the investment when you consider the quality. The interviews are cool also but can be just as enjoyable on tape. On the other hand, if you have nothing and want to get started, this would not be a bad place. Another factor in your decision might be whether or not you can get this material on tape from someone. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the fine packaging job on the set. Each disk individually packaged in its own jewel case, some double slim lines. Large format 12x12 booklet with source information (how accurate it is I've yet to check) and nice photographs, all previously published. A fine overall job, yet I really believe a 10CD box with the interviews transcribed would have been better and more affordable.

AMG: A gift to Dylan archaeologists from enterprising bootleggers, 14 CDs' worth. The results are imposing, to say the least, as is the price. Nevertheless, extremely worthwhile.

NOTE: This CD omits the two tracks, "Joey" and "Slow Train," included on the official release, as well as "All Along The Watchtower."

rmd: A very enjoyable disc in excellent sound.

BOB DYLAN'S DREAM

Although ISIS once reported the upcoming release of a complete October 19, 1988 (Radio City) line recording under this title, the report was apparently unfounded. Neither the disc nor the complete line recording has surfaced.

BOB DYLAN'S DREAM VOL. 1

Living Legend 005 [T-118]

Festival Hall (Melbourne, Australia); April 19, 1966

Tracklist: She Belongs To Me, 4th Time Around, Visions Of Johanna, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Desolation Row, Just Like A Woman, Tell Me Mama, Baby Let Me Follow You Down, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Press Conference Adelaide 1966

EDLIS: The press conference's sound quality and editing are appalling, but cannot currently be found on any other CDs.

rmd: Perhaps the worse sound ever issued on CD. (Anthony Kopolka)

BOB DYLAN'S DREAM VOL. 2

Living Legend 012 [T-105]

(1) The Bear (Chicago, IL); April 25, 1963 (line)

BOB'S FULL HOUSE

Sterling Sounds BD 03/04 [T-463]

(1) Brixton Academy (London, UK); March 31, 1995
(2) Brixton Academy (London, UK); March 29, 1995

Tracklist: (1) Down In The Flood, Señor, All Along The Watchtower, I Don't Believe You, Tombstone Blues, Shelter From The Storm, Mr. Tambourine Man, Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Highway 61 Revisited, In The Garden, Joey, Like A Rolling Stone, My Back Pages, I Shall Be Released (w/Elvis Costello), Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 (w/Costello, Chrissie Hynde, and Carole King)
(2)

DEEP: Without going overboard with too many plaudits, these disks are sensational. Recording quality far exceeds
"Romantic Facts Of Musketeers," while the better "Brixton Blues" falls short in the end. Good dynamics, crystal clear vocals and solid overall sound. Everything is pushed to a greater degree of clarity. Overall the slightly ragged production on the filler trax is overshadowed by the recording quality. Nice package and inserts, too.

rmd: The whole set is indeed utterly wonderful, and recording quality excellent. It meets the highest expectations, but in a deceptively subtle manner.

BOBFEST REHEARSALS

Yellow Cat 036/037 [T-517]

(New York, NY); October 1992

Tracklist: If Not For You (George Harrison) (2 takes), Absolutely Sweet Marie (George Harrison) (3 takes), Love Minus Zero (Eric Clapton), Don't Think Twice (Eric Clapton) It Takes A Lot To Laugh (Bob Dylan/Eric Clapton) (3 takes), My Back Pages (Roger McGuinn/George Harrison) (5 takes), Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues (inc.) (Neil Young), All Along The Watchtower (Neil Young) (2 takes, one inc.), Forever Young (Neil Young), License To Kill (Tom Petty) (3 takes), Rainy Day Women # 12 & 35 (Tom Petty), Mr. Tambourine Man (Roger McGuinn/Tom Petty) (2 takes), Interview (Eric Clapton)

CDG: Dylan content: 3 takes of "It Takes A Lot To Laugh." Rehearsals for the 30th anniversary concert, including songs from George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Roger McGuinn, Neil Young and Tom Petty. There is a lot of tuning in between the tracks. It's a nice disc, especially if you like the other people playing on the disc, but like other rehearsal discs, not one you'll be playing a lot.

BOGARTS (LIVE IN CINCINNATI OHIO)

unidentified label 2D

Bogarts (Cincinnati, OH); July 11, 1999)

Tracklist: Somebody Touched Me, My Back Pages, Desolation Row, To Ramona, Tangled Up In Blue, Girl From The North Country, Seeing The Real You At Last, Lay Lady Lay, Most Likely You Go Your Way, You Ain't Goin' Nowhere, Not Dark Yet, Highway 61 Revisited, Love Sick, Like A Rolling Stone, It Ain't Me Babe, Not Fade Away, Blowin' In The Wind

THE BOOTLEG

Wanted Man WMM022 [T-286]

(1) Bob Dylan (mono version)
(2) Bob Dylan outtakes
(3) Leeds demos (New York, NY); January 1962
(4) Freewheelin' outtakes

Tracklist: (1) You're No Good, Talkin' New York, In My Time Of Dyin', Man Of Constant Sorrow, Fixin' To Die, Pretty Peggy-O, Highway 51, Gospel Plow, Baby Let Me Follow You Down, House Of The Rising Sun, Freight Train Blues, Song To Woody, See That My Grave Is Kept Clean
(2) House Carpenter, He Was A Friend Of MIne, Hard Times In New York Town
(3) Man On The Street, Talkin' Bear Mountain Picnic Massacre Blues, Standing On The Highway, Poor Boy Blues, Ballad For A Friend
(4) Ramblin' Gamblin' Willie, Milk Cow Blues, Wichita Blues

rmd: What a strange release. The mono debut album may be more enjoyable than the now-standard stereo, but its outtakes duplicate official releases; the Leeds demos are mostly lame, and the Freewheelin' outtakes are quite common.

(6) Mama You Been On My Mind
(7) One Too Many Mornings
(8) Oh Babe It Ain't No Lie
(9) I Don't Believe You
(10) Seņor

DEEP: More scintillating offerings from the full-of-riches Spain '99 run plus three from Marseilles. The track list below speaks for itself, the quality is top notch throughout and Dylan and crew pretty much nail 'em all. A terrific spin from start to finish, not to mention the wonderful color pic on the cover and the eye-catching design work.

rmd: Just a wonderful compilation of material from the '99 Spanish tour which will leave you gasping in astonishment that Dylan can go on finding so much in these songs. Unhappily, the final track is mastered at the wrong speed.

NOTE: A 2-CDR fan project carrying the same title and general description, sourced from MP3 files, is reportedly in circulation. While some of the tracks may overlap, the two projects were apparently prepared independently.

BORDER BENEATH THE SUN

Silver Rarities SIRA 36/37 [T-216]

Pavillon (Paris, France); July 6, 1978

Tracklist: My Back Pages, She's Love Crazy, Baby Stop Crying, Mr Tambourine Man, Shelter From The Storm, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Tangled Up In Blue, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Maggie's Farm, I Don't Believe You, Like A Rolling Stone, I Shall Be Released, Going Going Gone, Rainy Day Women # 12 & 35, True Love Tends To Forget, Gates Of Eden, The Man In Me, One More Cup Of Coffee, Blowin' In The Wind, I Want You, Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power), Masters Of War, Just Like A Woman, Don't Think Twice, All Along The Watchtower, All I Really Want To Do, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), Forever Young, Changing Of The Guards, The Times They Are A-Changin'

rmd: An excellent performance in good sound. (Matthew Zuckerman)

THE BORN-AGAIN MUSIC

Flashback 2CD [T-280]

Massey Hall (Toronto, ON); April 20, 1980 (line)

Tracklist: If I've Got My Ticket Lord, Hold On, The Rainbow Sign, Show Me The Way Lord, Freedom At The Wall, This Train Is Bound For Glory [not Dylan]; Gotta Serve Somebody, I Believe In You, When He Returns, Ain't Gonna Go To Hell For Anybody, Cover Down Break Through, Man Gave Names To All The Animals, Precious Angel, Slow Train [Dylan]; Stranger In The City, Walk Around Heaven All Day [not Dylan]; Do Right To Me Baby, Solid Rock, Saving Grace, Saved, What Can I Do For You, In The Garden, Are You Ready, Pressing On [Dylan]

EDLIS: Complete show in excellent sound quality. Essential for those who like their Dylan Christian.

rmd: While the performance is not as inspired as the fall 1979 run of gospel shows, the sound quality of this line recording is far superior to the '79 audience tapes. A fine, fine pair of discs.

BRIXTON BLUES

Kiss The Stone 435/436 [T-494]

Brixton Academy (London, UK) March 31, 1995

Tracklist: Down In The Flood, Señor, All Along The Watchtower, I Don't Believe You, Tombstone Blues, Shelter From The Storm, Mr. Tambourine Man, Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Highway 61 Revisited, In The Garden, Joey, Like A Rolling Stone, My Back Pages, I Shall Be Released (w/Elvis Costello), Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 (w/Costello, Chrissie Hynde, and Carole King).

DEEP: Excellent sounding audience recording Brixton. Full frontal vocality accompanied by a like amount of full instrumentation adds up to a winner in my book. BD in great form on a varied set list. Packaging is so-so w/"Unplugged" shot as cover. Highly recommended.

BROADSIDE

Gunsmoke GSR2 [T-441]

(1) Broadside Radio Show (New York, NY); May 1962
(2) Broadside Office Recordings (New York, NY); November 1962-March 1963
(3) March On Washington (Washington, DC); August 28, 1963

Tracklist: (1) Ballad Of Donald White, The Death Of Emmett Till, Blowin In The Wind (w/Seeger, Turner, and Cunningham)
(2) I'd Hate To Be You On That Dreadful Day, Oxford Town, Paths Of Victory, Walkin' Down The Line, Playboys And Playgirls, Talkin Devil, Farewell, Masters Of War, Let Me Die In My Footsteps, Only A Hobo, John Brown; I Shall Be Free, Train A-Travellin', Cuban Missile Crisis
(3) Only A Pawn In Their Game (fragment), Only A Pawn In Their Game, Keep Your Eyes On The Prize (w/Baez and Chandler)

DEEP: Excellent assemblage of often overlooked and underrated sessions. Highly commendable collection assembles all Broadside-related tracks, culled from a variety of sources. Recording quality varies markedly, but an excellent archival document. One for the purists, perhaps (sound is fine for the period, some a bit thin). Some fascinating and unique performances unavailable elsewhere. A nice cross section of early material. Details provided as to sources and dates of recordings. Recommended to those into this period - fascinating stuff.

BUFFALO SKINNERS

Dream Tree 003 [T-269]

(1) Statenhal (Le Hague, Netherlands); June 10, 1989
(2) Shoreline Amphitheatre (Mountain View, CA); June 11, 1988
(3) Radio City Music Hall (New York, NY); October 17, 1988

Tracklist: (1) Most Likely You Go Your Way, Ballad Of Hollis Brown, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, Shelter From The Storm, Highway 61 Revisited, Mr. Tambourine Man, Don't Think Twice, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, I Don't Believe You, Trail Of The Buffalo, To Ramona, All Along The Watchtower
(2) I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine
(3) Bob Dylan's 115th Dream

EDLIS: All in all, this CD can not be recommended. While the recording quality is good (despite some tape hiss), the presentation on CD is odd. The Hague show is incomplete, and the edited tape has several flaws. A superior and complete recording of the concert can be found on
"Hunted Like A Crocodile."
