GASLIGHT TAPES

Laser 76025 [T-104]

Gaslight Cafe (New York, NY); October 1962

Tracklist: Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, Black Cross, No More Auction Block, Rocks and Gravel, Don't Think Twice, Barbara Allen, Moonshine Blues, Motherless Children, Handsome Molly, John Brown, Ballad Of Hollis Brown, Kindhearted Woman Blues, See That My Grave Is Kept Clean, Ain't No More Cane, Cocaine Blues, Cuckoo Is A Pretty Bird, West Texas (cut)

NOTE: The first unauthorized Dylan CD to surface. It has been regularly rereleased under other labels with packaging variations. The sound quality is reportedly inferior to the better circulating tapes.

rmd: Mostly traditional blues and folk material. Sound quality is not very good. A good look into his early stage presence. Several songs feature simple but very good guitar arrangements. Vocals are clear and phrasing is interesting. I've never been a huge fan of his earlier work but I like this disc more the older I get.

THE GENUINE BASEMENT TAPES [2000]

no label 1D

Basement Tapes (West Saugerties, NY); April-October 1967

Tracklist: Four Strong Winds, The French Girl, Joshua Gone Barbados, I Forgot To Remember To Forget, You Win Again, Still In Town, Waltzing With Sin, Big River, Folsom Prison Blues, Bells Of Rhymney, Nine Hundred Miles, No Shoes On My Feet. Spanish Is The Loving Tongue, On A Rainy Afternoon, I Can't Come In With A Broken Heart, Under Control, 0l' Roison The Beau, I'm Guilty Of Loving You, Johnny Todd, Cool Water, Banks Of The Royal Canal, Po' Lazarus

NOTE: Not recommended: misleading packaging. Despite its title, this disc is merely a copy of disc 5 of the long-circulating comprehensive release.

THE GENUINE BASEMENT TAPES VOL 1

Scorpio BD 200-2 [T-186]

Basement Tapes (West Saugerties, NY); April-October 1967

Tracklist: All You Have To Do Is Dream, I Can't Make It Alone, Down On Me, Bonnie Ship The Diamond, One Man's Loss, Baby Ain't That Fine, Rock Salt And Nails, A Fool Such As I, Stones That You Throw, Hills Of Mexico, It's Alright, Song For Canada, Try Me Little Girl, One For The Road, I Don't Hurt Anymore, People Get Ready, Lock Your Door, Don't You Try Me Now, All You Have To Do Is Dream, Young But Daily Growing

BIAB: Volume one consists entirely of songs discovered about ten years after the release of the "official" Basement Tapes album. Some of these songs feature Dylan on 12-string guitar and others feature him on piano. All are very impassioned performances.

AMG: Mainly traditional material, some of it superb.

THE GENUINE BASEMENT TAPES VOL 2

Scorpio BD 200-2 [T-187]

Basement Tapes (West Saugerties, NY); April-October 1967

Tracklist: Odds And Ends, Nothing Was Delivered, Odds And Ends, Get Your Rocks Off, Clothes Line Saga, Apple Suckling Tree, Apple Suckling Tree, Going To Acapulco, Gonna Get You Now, Tears Of Rage, Tears Of Rage, Tears Of Rage, Quinn The Eskimo, Quinn The Eskimo, Open The Door Homer, Open The Door Homer, Open The Door Homer, Nothing Was Delivered, Nothing Was Delivered, I'm Not There (1956) Don't Ya Tell Henry, Too Much Of Nothing

BIAB: Volume two consists mostly of those songs available in 1967 and subsequently released on the official Basement Tapes album, but many of these versions have never been heard before by the general public, even though they have been known of for years. This is the core of the Basement Tapes. The nice thing about this disc is that is tends to present the multiple takes more or less in order, so that for the first time we actually have both versions of "Quinn the Eskimo" and all three takes of "Open the Door Homer" on one disc. Also, the multiple versions present further evidence that these songs were probably intended to be released as part of an album at one time or another.
AMG: Although half the material is included on official releases, the other half makes this disc essential.

THE GENUINE BASEMENT TAPES VOL 3

Scorpio BD-SC-1900 [T-222]

Basement Tapes (West Saugerties, NY); April-October 1967

Tracklist: Million Dollar Bash, Yea Heavy And A Bottle Of Bread, Million Dollar Bash, Yea Heavy And A Bottle Of Bread, Please Mrs Henry, Crash On The Levee, Crash On The Levee, Lo and Behold, Lo And Behold, Ferdinand The Impostor, Tiny Montgomery, This Wheel's On Fire, You Ain't Goin' Nowhere, I Shall Be Released, Too Much Of Nothing, Even A Tomato, Santa Fe, Silent Weekend, Too Much Of Nothing, Sign On The Cross

NOTE: Volume 3 now circulates in stereo as well as the mono version described in comments on the first circulating CD. "After The Crash vol 1," which is in stereo, is preferred by some to the mono, but not the stereo, version of this CD.

BIAB: Volume three features more of the "original" songs, but with a few extra newly discovered songs thrown in for good measure. Despite the wealth of wonderful material, this disc is the one I like the least, primarily because of the poor sound. Whether by design or accident, the entire disc is in mono and features a lot of hiss at times. I know that there are stereo versions of some of these songs available, and so the decision to master them in mono makes for some pretty poor mixing results. Garth Hudson can't be heard as he should and some of the harmonies are buried. Still this disc is essential because of the material presented.

AMG: Despite the relatively low fidelity, the quality of the music shines through.

THE GENUINE BASEMENT TAPES VOL 4

Scorpio BD-SC-80-07 [T-223]

Basement Tapes (West Saugerties, NY); April-October 1967

Tracklist: You Ain't Goin' Nowhere, Bourbon Street, All American Boy, Wildwood Flower, See That My Grave Is Kept Clean, She'll Be Comin' Round The Mountain, Flight Of the Bumblebee, Confidential To Me, I'm A Fool For You, Next Time On The Highway, The Big Flood, Every Time I Come To Town, See You Later Allen Ginsberg, The Spanish Song, I'm Your Teenage Prayer, I'm In The Mood, Belshazaar, Bring It On Home, The King Of France

BIAB: Starting with volume four, the rest of the unreleased basement tapes began to go public. What we have here are some of the most entertaining songs in the whole collection. They're also the poorest sounding with lots of distortion and occasional drop outs from time to time. Still, there is some very good material here. In fact, I would have to say that volumes 4 and 5 are my favorites of the series. Bob and the Band are having a lot of fun here. The fun is contagious.

AMG: The loosest set of tracks, including some fairly goofy material.

THE GENUINE BASEMENT TAPES VOL 5

Scorpio BD-SC-80-06 [T-224]

BIAB: This is my favorite of the five volumes, mainly because everyone seems to be having so much fun. Like volume 4, this one contains some of the more obscure outtakes from the basement tapes sessions.

AMG: Mostly traditional songs, leaning heavily on Dylan's folk and country influences.

NOTE: Cloned from previous release.

THE GENUINE BASEMENT TAPES 1-5

Wild Wolf 6701-6705 5D

Basement Tapes (Saugerties, NY); summer-fall 1967

DEEP: A reissue of the original Scorpio release presenting the legendary Basement Tapes sessions in the best quality around. Over 100 tracks spread nicely over 5 disks, including unreleased gems and many wild, alternate versions as well as numerous covers. Each disk is stellar and the set as a whole is required listening. Disk 3 is now in stereo. Quality is very good to excellent throughout, though certainly not official quality.

BIAB: The music is all available here on five CDs called "The Genuine Basement Tapes," and genuine they are. No overdubs and no cleaning up - just the way they were recorded. Some tracks cut off just as they get going, others begin in the middle of verses, and others are merely tryouts that never got beyond the initial runthrough stage. Some of it is in very clear mono, and some is distorted and full of hiss, but mostly the sound is superb. Many people have complained about the stereo sound, with Dylan's voice on one channel and most of the instruments on the other (much like the early Parlophone Beatles albums), but I actually like this sound myself. I get to hear Dylan's voice in isolation and Garth Hudson's organ is much more prominent. Also, some of the harmonies that weren't apparent on the official album and early bootlegs can now be heard for the first time.

rmd: Packaged in a glossy folding cardboard sleeve with photographs from the first half of Bob's career, as well as a booklet that gives details of the tracks and a piece by Clinton Heylin about the official Bootleg Series 1-3. Many of the tracks are already circulating. The package is very well produced and presented. It is much less convenient to handle than Great Dane's
"You Don't Know Me," but contains a much more representative sample of Dylan's career. (Clive Barrett)

NOTE: The 1999 Scorpio reissue of the set includes a slightly revamped booklet.

THE GENUINE BOOTLEG SERIES TAKE 2

Scorpio GZ H21975/H2202/H21930 [T-074]

DEEP: Approx 40% unreleased and, of the other 60%, most (if not all) is in superior quality to what is currently available on CD. Disks are over 70 minutes each and the packaging rivals any Dylan CD to date. All in all, a much better collection than GBS Volume 1. I thought that collection more or less sucked. This one is different and well worth owning.

CDG: No one will be disappointed with this. It comes with a booklet of 40 pages, including many photos.

rmd: The package configuration is identical to the original set. If anything, the photos are even better this time around. The tracks here seem equally good or superior in sound quality to other CD releases. The totally new material on GBS2 (disc 1) stands well enough on its own and is all knock-your-socks-off quality. (Bob Stacy)

NOTE: The 1999 Scorpio reissue of the set includes a slightly revamped booklet.

GENUINE BOOTLEG SERIES VOLUME 3 (THE THIRD ONE NOW)

DEEP: A startling collection of unreleased tunes and perhaps the most enjoyable and surprising of the 3 released so far. Once again, the packaging is more than deluxe: four panel gatefold glossy slipcase with picture sleeves for each disk, rare glossy Bob pics on each panel and a 40 page booklet replete with two dozen more rare, vintage photos. GBS3 is a desert island collection. The tracks flow together so perfectly and capture each of the many phases of Dylan's ever changing art perhaps as well as anything ever has.

GENUINE BOOTLEG SERIES I - II

no label 7CDR [T-649/650/651/652/653/654/655]

A repackaging of the glass-mastered 3-disc Genuine Bootleg Series 1 and 2 into a 7-CDR set, with no division between series 1 and series 2. Each CD is also packaged independently. Since the individual discs have been assigned T-numbers, glass-mastered versions apparently exist; however, it is not clear why a glass- mastered version would be repackaged to conform to the slightly shorter length of the standard CDR.

(15) interview and listener calls (c. 10 minutes)

NOTE: This set includes all the circulating 1966 line recordings of concert performances except the Dwarf Music demo of "Tell Me Momma," which is ascribed to Sheffield. The performance of "I Don't Believe You" listed for Dublin corresponds to the Biograph track listed as Belfast; while the official ascription has often been considered erroneous, Krogsgaard has found records showing Columbia has both the Dublin and Belfast performances of the song in its vaults. The titles for the Glasgow Hotel tracks are unofficial.

NOTE: The set is divided into five subparts, which will no doubt soon be circulating separately: "A Phoenix In April" [Sydney]; "The Children's Crusade" [Melbourne, Adelaide, Edinburgh]; "While The Establishment Burns" [Dublin, Copenhagen, Edinburgh]; "A Nightly Ritual" [Liverpool, Glasgow, Sheffield, Birmingham]; "The Genuine Royal Albert Hall Concerts" [Manchester, London]

DEEP: [A Phoenix In April] What hits you initially is the startling and crystalline quality of the recording of Dylan's voice, not to mention the full tones of the guitar and harp. The singular nature of the acoustic performances is awe-inspiring. The electric set is, as a whole, my favorite of all the Dylan/Hawks performances. . For those of us who dig the sound of his voice, it does not get much better than this. A monumental show and a blistering performance for the ages
[The Children's Crusade] Stunning sound and a focused, deliberate performance combine to make this a highlight of the extant acoustic sets. A smooth recording that captures Dylan in what seems to be a more mellow, "stoned" mood than Sydney. The trio of electric tracks, full-bodied and well-balanced recordings, make for some great listening. The Adelaide interview is interesting.
[While The Establishment Burns] Sharper, more detailed sound for Dublin than anything out previously; a much more straightforward performance with Dylan completely focused on each tune immediately upon completing the one before. The "Rolling Stone" from Edinburgh may be the highlight of the set, 8 minutes of rock and roll heaven. Dylan's phrasing is sublime and his furious vocals are something to behold.
[A Nightly Ritual] The Liverpool electric set is stunning stuff, dominated by Dylan's bold vocals and Robbie Robertson's razor-edge guitar fills. The lovely Glasgow tape is in pristine sound. Sheffield is an absolutely gorgeous recording, so full and richly toned it will leave you stunned. Dylan's performance goes from ridiculously phenomenal to sublime; he nails every tune and his harp playing is brilliant. A brilliant performance in astounding sound quality.
[The Genuine Royal Albert Hall Concerts] Better to stick to the official release for the Manchester tracks. Terrific sound on the May 26 tracks (despite a few new sound glitches), with Dylan's deep vocals way up front and the rich tones of his guitar and harp caught perfectly. Fuller, richer, crisper and cleaner sound than on anything previously circulating, with considerably less acetate noise. The wonderful electric performances have a bit more roll than rock.. The harp playing is surreal throughout the May 27 acoustic set, and the standout song is most definitely the lengthy, drawn out "Desolation Row." The fantastic radio show excerpts wrap things up nicely.
Overall, this release, stands head and shoulders above anything that has come before. In addition, the packaging is distinguished by its stunning graphics and dazzling array of bonus paraphernalia. A singular, original artifact, and certainly required listening for any serious rock music lover.

anon: The Sydney tracks are far superior to any versions previously circulating, with more punch and dynamics, brighter and fuller sound. Melbourne is remastered from the long-unavailable Wanted Man release, the finest source, in fabulous quality. Dublin, while not quite so fine as the other acoustic sets, is still better than any previous release. The Edinburgh tracks are flat out the most frenetic, manic, and high-powered performances of these songs. Liverpool features both incredible sound and performances, with off-the-wall great lead guitar from Robbie Robertson. Sheffield is a haunting, otherworldly performance, in the finest sound quality of all the acoustic sets. The Manchester acoustic set certainly feels different from both the official release and "Guitars Kissing," but the variation is slight. The London tracks, sourced from the Gelston acetates, are the smoothest, cleanest, and quietest versions of these performances to date. And the interview segments are way cool and entertaining.

rmd: A stunning set. The new Sheffield acoustic set is gorgeous, a finely nuanced, charismatic performance in excellent quality. The stunning Liverpool electric set also sounds first-rate. Packaging is top-notch.(DM)

GENUINE LIVE 1966: THE AUDIENCE RECORDINGS
Scorpio 6D

Although detailed advance reports of this set, from reliable sources, appeared in the fall of 2000, the set now seems unlikely to appear in this form, supplanted by the less ambitious
"Away From The Past." The 5 main discs of this release are expected to include the better 1966 audience recordings, probably dominated by the well-known Bristol, Leicester, and Edinburgh tapes. The sixth, "bonus," disc -- really more of a booby prize -- will feature excerpts from the almost unlistenable White Plains and Hempstead recordings.

GENUINE ROYAL ALBERT HALL CONCERTS

Not actually a discrete release, but the final two discs from "Genuine Live 1966" which circulate separately as CDR copies. The set includes the circulating tracks from the may 26 and May 27, 1966 London concerts, as well as part of the May 17, 1966 Manchester acoustic set (from the initially-circulating acetates rather than the official release) and an excerpt from a January 1966 radio appearance.

GET LOUD!

Cuttlefish 013/014 [T-415]

Colston Hall (Bristol, UK); May 10, 1966

Tracklist: She Belongs to Me, Fourth Time Around, Visions of Johanna, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Desolation Row, Just Like A Woman, Mr. Tambourine Man, Tell Me Momma, I Don't Believe You, Baby Let Me Follow You Down, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat, One Too Many Mornings, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Like A Rolling Stone

rmd: It's an audience recording and sound is pretty poor, but it's history! 1966 was too early to expect good audience recordings. The acoustic disc is just about listenable if you have a good system, but the electric half is dismal. Great music, of course, but only for the completist. (Matthew Zuckerman)

CDG: Part board recording, part good/VG audience tape. Perfectly paced. Powerful harmonies on duets with Joan Baez. Touching, detailed renditions of all songs.

rmd: The recording quality of Dylan's duets with Baez seem to be the only weak points of this CD. (Anthony Kapolka)

Heylin: Comes in for much praise, but these CDs have their share of sound problems, and omit the title track.

(2) Most Of The Time
(3) Delia
(4) Visions Of Johanna

rmd: Sound quality on this one is very good, if a little quiet. Not as good as others from the same week, though. A fine performance with particularly good versions of several songs, including the scarce "Delia." (MZ)

NOTE: The CD packaging reportedly identifies (3) in error as "Delia's Gone" rather than "Delia"; the two songs are quite distinct.

GOLDEN VANITY

Wanted Man 002 [T-238]

Tracklist: Newry Highwayman (7/1/92), Girl On The Greenbriar Shore (6/30/92), Little Moses (5/9/92), Golden Vanity (4/24/92), 20/20 Vision (10/25/91), Barbara Allen (6/22/91), When First Unto This Country (6/12/91), Roving Gambler (11/6/91), That Lucky Old Sun (11/5/91), Two Soldiers (11/2/91), Dark As A Dungeon (2/6/90), Trail Of The Buffalo (6/18/91), Female Rambling Sailor (4/3/92), Man Of Constant Sorrow (6/11/88), Eileen Aroon (6/15/88), Wild Mountain Thyme (6/22/88), Waggoner's Lad (10/14/88), The Lakes Of Pontchartrain (6/17/88)

CDG: Good, but not great.

rmd: Sound quality varies from track to track but it's all very listenable. As for the performances, they range from excellent to out of this world. "Roving Blade," "Golden Vanity" and especially "Eileen Aroon" rank as some of his finest performances. (MZ)

Goode [Taj Mahal]; Willie And The Hand Jive [Taj Mahal]; Peggy Sue [Bob Dylan/George Harrison; Dizzy Miss Lizzy [George Harrison]; Twist And Shout [Taj Mahal/George Harrison/John Fogerty]

NOTE: This CD scrambles the order of the performances, and its packaging inaccurately lists several prominent musicians (including Little Richard and Dr. John) who were not present.

GONNA BE THERE TOMORROW?

Piggham 73/74 2CDR

(Gothenburg, Sweden); May 14, 2000

Tracklist: Roving Gambler, Times They Are A-Changin', Masters Of War, Boots Of Spanish Leather, Tangled Up In Blue, Love Minus Zero, Country Pie, Can't Wait, All Along The Watchtower, Tell Me That It Isn't True, Drifter's Escape, Leopardskin Pillbox Hat, Love Sick, Like A Rolling Stone, Forever Young, Not Fade Away, Don't Think Twice, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, Blowin' In The Wind

rmd: The sound is not as good as on the better recent recordings; quite distant on the quieter tracks, with notable (and sometimes obtrusive) audience participation. The defects do not prevent the discs from being enjoyable. The packaging is lackluster and the issuer's price outrageous, though.

DEEP: A focused, biting Dylan peformance that simply sizzles, showcased in near perfect quality. The line recording catches every little nuance and inflection with startling clarity. This anthology of live performances by high-profile 1960's performers (mostly pirate, it appears) includes Dylan's 1966 Manchester performance of "Like A Rolling Stone," incorrectly attributed to the Royal Albert Hall.

DEEP: Complete soundboard recording of the Monterey show in outstanding quality. Dylan's vocals are crystal clear, the recording is perfectly balanced and the performance is exceptional. You can hear every little nuance of voice and instrument and that's really all you can ask for with a Dylan show. The setlist is great, to. The excellence continues unabated with a wonderful selection of filler tracks All very good to excellent quality audience recordings. Needless to say, a prime candidate for Disk of the Year.

NOTE: Now only a footnote to the official release, but the variant mix on the electric set still gives this material limited appeal -- after you've bought Bootleg Series 4. There are also variants of this set in variant packaging, one including a soundcheck version of "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues," making for a slightly more interesting footnote.

DEEP: That sound you are hearing are collective jaws dropping all over the world. Far be it from me to describe/comment on this legendary show, I'll leave that to the experts. Suffice it to say that this first disk is everything we had hoped for, and more. It easily exceeds, in all sound categories, anything that has preceded it. Aces all around for disk one - the acoustic set. If you've never taken notice of the electric set before, you will now. Incredibly intense is the best I can come up with. It is frightening music (the good kind). All eight electric tracks are amazing. The music that Dylan and the Hawks created that night were cannon blasts never heard before, and possibly not heard since that tour. The sound is so much improved it's like hearing a different show. The legendary status is much deserved. Simply and beautifully packaged in a glossy gatefold sleeve. Inner gatefold has a killer shot of BD in a checked suit, and each disk is individually packaged with a sleeve featuring a collage of Bob photos. Lastly, there is a fine little essay written by someone who obviously attended the show.

AMG: The fidelity is absolutely astounding. Everything from the furor surrounding Dylan's so-called defection from folk to the sinful sellout of wedding his music to rock & roll is on open-wound display in the eight-song electric set. Dylan and the Hawks are brash, confident, brutal, and unrelenting.
