DEEP: Upfront, in your face sound with great depth and
clarity. It's hard to fault any of the European summer '98
efforts, and this one is right up there, particularly considering
the killer setlist and splendid renditions, as well as the enticing
filler. A stunner and highly recommended.
rmd: An excellent release, presenting a fun and finely-nuanced concert in excellent quality. The filler is top-notch, too; the packaging is inoffensively plain. (DM)

NOTE: An incomplete repackaging of the 5-CDR fan project "Pre-Columbian Bob
Dylan." The set includes "Ten Million In A Week,"
[Volume 1]; "Ten Thousand For A
Tape," [Volume 2]; "Do It The Old Way,"
[Volume 3)]; and "Columbia Discovered,"
[Volume 4]. It omits "I Can't
Play Out Of Tune," [Volume 5, Minnesota Hotel Tape.] As
on the original fan set, material has been edited out of the First
and Second MacKenzie Tapes.
DEEP: An archival collection of mostly scarce and elusive
early recordings of Dylan, from the 1958 Bucklen tape to the full
Feb '65 Les Crane TV show. Much of this material is new to silver
disk and is presented in the best circulating quality.
"Best" in some cases is not optimum; the nature of some
of the home recordings and the technology used to record it was, by
today's standards, crude. On the other hand, I would not
characterize some of the "archival" material unlistenable
by any means.... only challenging. As you can see from the track
listing, the historical importance of the material cannot be
overstated. If Dylan were a tree, these would be the roots. From
all standpoints - fan, collector, music lover - an essential and
enlightening look into Dylan's ground floor roots. Originally
circulated as a CDR collection, this version has reportedly been
remastered and cleaned up a bit, with very attractive
packaging.
rmd: Virtually all of this material is low-fidelity, and
some is barely listenable at best.
ICE: An overview of the early Dylan, starting with the 1958
Bucklen tape and including generous chunks of well-known early
recordings. None of the material will be new to serious fans, but
this is a one-stop source for much of the surviving "pre-
Columbian" music. A booklet and liner notes would have been
nice, though.

Are You Tonight?, Masters Of War, Just Like A Woman, To Ramona, All
Along The Watchtower, All I Really Want To Do, It's Alright Ma I'm
Only Bleeding), Forever Young, Changing Of The Guards
NOTE: Not recommended. Most, if not all, versions of
this CD play too fast.
rmd: While this is exactly what a purist hopes for -- an
entire concert, labeled and ordered properly -- it is only a decent
audience recording, and Dylan sounds particularly shrill. Despite
my opinion, I have heard people say that this was their favorite
show from this tour, as Dylan exhibits a great deal of energy
during this performance. A double CD box with a green profile of
Dylan against a red background. The insert booklet is minimal, and
repeats the information on the outside of the box. The title is
also a bit odd. (Anthony Kapolka)

DEEP: Easily the finest compilation of live tracks to grace
a CD since, well, "Golden
Vanity." The performances are all top notch, the quality
is wonderful and the track selection is very interesting. A can't
miss winner in everyone's book, plus a couple of delightful
caricatures, along with a nice cover to complete a fine effort.
CDG: A wonderful compilation of tracks from the 1996
European tour, in top sound quality (except the ghastly recording
with the Stones).

EDLIS: Both "Apollo Landing," and
"The Illusion Of Time" are in excellent sound, with a
little audience noise in the background. The source tapes are
quite distinct, with "Apollo Landing" being more
upfront, although some of the instruments are louder and a little
harsher.
rmd: Good, but not as good as "Apollo Landing," which was
apparently recorded closer to the stage and includes bonus tracks
from the night before. (MZ)

Wild Wolf 6401 [T-541]
Unreleased Columbia album compiled from Town Hall (April 12, 1963)
and Carnegie Hall (October 26, 1963)
Tracklist: Last Thoughts On Woody Guthrie, Lay Down Your Weary
Tune, Dusty Old Fairgrounds, John Brown, When the Ship Comes In,
Who Killed Davy Moore, Percy's Song, Bob Dylan's New Orleans Rag,
Seven Curses
DEEP: The album, just as it was originally intended,
complete with a color glossy reprint of the original intended cover
plus a long essay by Bob that is vintage early 60's Bob wit and
keen insight, written in that inimitable fashion. The classiest,
most attractive and best put together single CD package that these
eyes have ever seen. The music does for 1963 what "All Hallows Eve" does for
1964, "Now Is The Time For Your
Tears" does for 1965 and "Guitars Kissing" does
for 1966 - Dylan at his best singing tunes that had not, and mostly
would not, grace any of his official albums. Songs of wit, candor
and insight that would have caused, had the LP been released, as
much mixed-up confusion and study as the classics that followed.
Taken from an original copy of the acetate in sharp, cutting, full
bodied and true quality, the best to date of this material.
Presented 34 years after the fact; packaged in a way that would
have done 'em proud had it been issued like this in 1963.
CDG: A wonderful document of what Dylan was doing at the
time. His acoustic performances are excellent. The packaging also
includes one of Dylan's prose poems.

(3) He Was A Friend Of Mine, Man On The Street, Hard Times In New
York Town, Poor Boy Blues, Ballad For A Friend, Rambling Gambling
Willie, Man On The Street, Talking Bear Mountain Picnic Massacre
Blues, Standing On The Highway
(4) Rocks and Gravel
(5) If You Gotta Go Go Now
DEEP: Nine Leeds demos presented in sizzling, best ever
quality, sandwiched between a partial Carnegie Chapter Hall
performance that *should* have included all the circulating tracks.
The Bear broadcast from Chicago 1963 is in quite good, albeit a bit
compressed, quality. The two common outtakes could have been
excised in favor of the remaining extant Carnegie tracks. The focus
here, though, is on the sparkling quality Leeds demos, presented in
far superior sound than previous incarnations. Now, if we could
only get the Witmarks in the same quality. A particularly
tasteful, B&W 16 page booklet is chock full of vintage early 60's
Bob pics that are more than a bit pleasing to the eye.
rmd: Once again, Dandelion has pointlessly edited out
Dylan's between-song comments, abridging the Bear tape. (SK)

Knockin' On Heaven's Door
(2) When He Returns, Man Gave Names To All The Animals, Precious
Angel, Slow Train, Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking, Do Right To Me
Baby, Solid Rock, Saving Grace
DEEP: While a smidgen over-recorded, this serves as a nice
companion piece to the outstanding Avignon '81 board, with a
slightly varied set list and several different tracks. The 8 bonus
tracks were reportedly salvaged from a Columbia acetate (?) and
supposedly considered for actual release. If Dylan's '80
"religious" shows appeal to you, this one's for you. An
outstanding set nicely packaged with 8 page booklet, color pics,
essay.
rmd: Great song selection, fantastic performances, and
wonderful sound.

INFINITY ON TRIAL
Wanted Man WMM 62/63 [T-454]
Grand Rex (Paris, France); February 1, 1990
Tracklist: Most Likely You Go Your Way, Ballad Of Hollis Brown,
Political World, What Was It You Wanted, Tears Of Rage, Memphis
Blues Again, All Along The Watchtower, Visions Of Johanna, Mama You
Been On My Mind, Gates Of Eden, It Ain't Me Babe, It Takes A Lot To
Laugh It Takes A Train To Cry, Everything Is Broken, Lenny Bruce,
Man of Peace, You're A Big Girl Now, Like A Rolling Stone, Barbara
Allen, Forever Young, Maggie's Farm
DEEP: The quality leaves a bit to be desired. A very
enjoyable show and performance (although these '90 shows are not my
favorites). I'd rate the Critic's Choice Hammersmith 1990 set a
bit higher than this. Plus they could have put some filler on, as
Wanted Man constantly leaves unfilled space on their disks.
Recommended, albeit not strongly.

INSIDE THE COLISEUM
Grunt 002/003 [T-457]
Veterans Coliseum (New Haven, CT); September 17, 1978
Tracklist: I'm Ready, Is Your Love in Vain, Shelter From The Storm,
Love Minus Zero, Tangled Up In Blue. Ballad Of A Thin Man, Maggie's
Farm, I Don't Believe You, Like A Rolling Stone, I Shall Be
Released, Going Going Gone, I Threw It All Away, It Ain't Me Babe,
Am I Your Stepchild, One More Cup Of Coffee, Blowin In The Wind, I
Want You, Se¤or, Just Like A Woman, The Man In Me, All Along The
Watchtower, All I Really Wanna Do, It's Alright Ma, Forever Young,
Changing Of The Guards
DEEP: A welcome addition to the few 1978 shows available on
CD. Though not the best quality, decent sound nonetheless, albeit
a slight bit harsh and "busy." All this is overshadowed
by a wonderful performance and some cool renditions of scarcer
songs. Most of the show is a typical setlist for this time. If you
like the '78 tour, you'll like this.
rmd: A top-rank performance in unhappily dodgy sound.
(Matthew Zuckerman).

INTO THE FLOOD

Harvest, This Wheel's On Fire, I Shall Be Released, Up On Cripple
Creek [Band]; All Along The Watchtower, Ballad Of Hollis Brown,
Knockin' On Heaven's Door; The Times They Are A-Changin', Don't
Think Twice It's Alright, Wedding Song, Just Like A Woman, It's
Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding); Rag Mama Rag, Loving You Is Sweeter
Than Ever, The Shape I'm In, The Weight [Band]
rmd: No better than the circulating audience tapes of 1974
shows. In other words, not good. Includes all Band tracks, but
missing the last four Dylan tracks. (Masato Kato)

rmd: Not as good as the better circulating tapes.
Inexplicably, several tracks are taken from clearly inferior
sources. (LK)
Like every other Isle of Wight release, the sound is wildly uneven,
with tracks veering from the very good to the barely
listenable.

(2) To Ramona, What Good Am I
DEEP: Just another fine performance from the summer Euro
shows, this one from Munster in drop-dead good quality. A definite
"on" night with just the right amount of "odd"
songs among the setlist to take this to the outstanding level, when
combined with the quality. An inspired performance all around with
several moments of transcendence. A winner all around.
CDG: A very nice show, complete and in great, crispy sound
quality.

NOTE: The contents of this set is not reported with certainty. A reliable tracklist should settle the matter, since the setlists for the performances varied sharply.

Want To Do (* duet with Joan Baez)
DEEP: The same show as "All
Hallows Eve," without the bonus tracks; the sound quality
is very similar. A classic '64 show, as important to '64 as the
Manchester CD is to '65 or "Guitars Kissing" is to '66.
If you don't have it, get it.
