DEEP: Another presentation of the Monterey soundboard; the
quality is, again, excellent throughout. A highly recommended set
if you don't already have it elsewhere on CD.
CDG: All tracks in excellent quality. A great disc.

LAKE COMPOUNCE FESTIVAL PARK
Audifon 002 [T-419]
Lake Compounce (Bristol, CT); September 4, 1988 (line)
Tracklist: Subterranean Homesick Blues, I Don't Believe You, Just

NOTE: Despite some contrary reports, all versions of this
disk apparently omit "To Ramona," the first song in the
acoustic set.
DEEP: Phenomenal quality, appreciably better than the
excellent "Wanted Man." An
essential disk from the 1988 tour. Great performance along with the
sound make it a worthy Hall of Fame disk.

(17) Legend In My Time
DEEP: A strange compilation, a wide array of tracks from
various sources, almost all having appeared before on other
releases. While the quality is fairly good overall, there is no
coherence to the set, which seems to have been flung together
without any thought. Still, many of the things on here are rather
elusive, so this may serve those who desire the material on
"real" disc and cannot get it elsewhere.

LEGENDS LIVE
Mainline SW 103 [T-012]
This collection includes only one Dylan track, the Free Trade Hall
performance of "Like A Rolling Stone."

LEICESTER '66
no label 2761-015 [T-299]
(1) De Montfort Hall (Leicester, UK); May 15, 1966
(2) Colston Hall (Bristol, UK); May 10, 1966
(3) De Montfort Hall (Leicester, UK); May 15, 1966
Tracklist: (1) She Belongs To Me, Fourth Time Around, Visions Of
Johanna, It's All Over Now Baby Blue
(2) Desolation Row
(3) Just Like A Woman (cut), Mr Tambourine Man, Tell Me Momma, I
Don't Believe You, Baby Let Me Follow You Down, Just Like Tom
Thumb's Blues (cut), Desolation Row
S&P: The complete recording of the Leicester tape, with
a misguided insertion. Given that the uniqueness of the recording
itself is as important as the concert being recorded, this does
slightly discolour the icing on the cake. Amusing for its
quirkiness if not for its recording quality.
rmd: If you are looking for pristine PA quality then look
elsewhere. This is not one of those. There are even much better
performances from that era captured on other audience tapes. That
said, this is not the best but certainly not the worst of audience
tapes surfaced from the 1966 tour. If you find it, your trouble
alone is rewarded in that harp solo. Cracks me up every time I hear
it. (Bob Stacy)

(11) Palacio Municipale des Deportes (Granada, Spain); April 18,

(12) Velodromo Luis Puig (Valencia, Spain); April 19, 1999
Tracklist: (1) Restless Farewell
(2) Blind Willie McTell
(3) Tomorrow Is A Long Time
(4) Across The Borderline
(5) The Times We've Known
(6) My Blue-Eyed Jane
(7) Honky Tonk Blues, Ballad Of A Thin Man
(8) Friend Of The Devil
(9) I Don't Believe You
(10) Visions Of Johanna
(11) Fourth Time Around
(12) Girl From The North Country, Seņor
NOTE: This commercial CD set was cloned from the fan-circulated project "Yankee Power.". Credit for its exceptional quality rests with its anonymous, unpaid compilers rather than the label which appropriated the material (and reportedly supplied an inaccurate sourcelist on the initial release).
DEEP: Another smartly compiled compilation providing rarely played material alongside some of the more devastating performances of more frequently played tunes. Terrific quality throughout and nicely selected tuneage. From mountain music, to country, to folk to 50's rockabilly, this set runs the gamut and illustrates the amazing versatility and command that these guys have of all types of sound, with Bob's vocals shining throughout. Another keeper.
rmd: A stunning compilation of live tracks from 1998-99, with terrific highlights. However, nearly half the contents are also used as filler tracks on "The Lonely Graveyard Of My Mind."
NOTE: Other reports identifying this CD as a compilation of
tracks for the winter 1999 American tour are incorrect. A set of
tentative track attributions I posted, in an attempt to correct
those reports, introduced a new set of errors. This list, from
"Deep Beneath The Waves," is more recent and most
reliable.

rmd: This is well packaged, and of similar sound quality to
the better known Swinging Pig disc. which was probably used as a
master. However, the track divisions are peculiar; therefore, I'd
recommend the Swinging Pig disc instead.

Down By The Schoolyard, Further To Fly, Graceland, Cool Cool River,
Slip Sliding Away, Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes, You Can Call
Me Al, Late In The Evening, Still Crazy After All These Years
DEEP: A classy looking Japanese set, housed in a color
glossy gatefold slipcase, in very good quality. Overall, a fine
performance from Dylan, et al, although far from the spectacular
heights they were to scale in the Fall; a rather pedestrian Dylan
setlist finds its highlights in the encores. A snazzy piece.

rmd: To be avoided. It sounds like it was copied from

not as good as some vinyl boots; the "Royal Albert Hall"
tracks are significantly worse than the Swinging Pig cd. (Anthony
Kopalka)

LIVE IN EVANSTON, ILLINOIS
Real Live 10 [T-190]

Tracklist: Man In The Long Black Coat, Watching The River Flow,
Simple Twist Of Fate, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, All Along The
Watchtower, Gotta Serve Somebody, Golden Vanity, I'll Remember You,
Ballad Of A Thin Man, What Good Am I?, Highway 61 Revisited
rmd: This is supposed to be one of the very best shows of
1991. With seven songs missing, it's hard to tell. Seek the tape,
or any other more complete account, instead.
rmd: Nice show, and good clear sound. Clear enunciation was
not a major priority this night. But that doesn't hinder the better
performances from grabbing your attention.
NOTE: The first 8 tracks on the disc were reportedly
mastered at the wrong speed, and these tracks are slightly fast.
A speed-corrected CDR version circulates as a fan project, under
the same title. The original disc reportly circulates in three
slightly variant forms of packaging; the other two carry the titles
"Illinois '91" and "Live In Evanston '91."

(2) When He Returns, Man Gave Names To All The Animals, Precious Angel, Slow Train, Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking, Do Right To Me Baby, Solid Rock, Saving Grace
NOTE: This set is apparently cloned from the Dandelion version of "In The Summertime." The packaging gives incorrect date and venue information for the principal content.
DEEP: While a smidgen over-recorded, this serves as a nice
companion piece to the outstanding Avignon '81 board, with a
slightly varied set list and several different tracks. The 8 bonus
tracks were reportedly salvaged from a Columbia acetate (?) and
supposedly considered for actual release. If Dylan's '80
"religious" shows appeal to you, this one's for you. An
outstanding set nicely packaged with 8 page booklet, color pics,
essay.
rmd: Great song selection, fantastic performances, and
wonderful sound.

NOTE: Not recommended. A semiprofessional CDR offered through internet auction sites. The disc is both incomplete (missing most of the acoustic set) and absurdly overpriced. A complete (and likely better-sounding) fan disc should be sought out.

LIVE IN SAN FRANCISCO 1975
Super Golden Radio Shows SGRS 027 [T-139]

rmd: It is really too bad Dylan's vocal performance here is
almost inaudible. Everything else sounds fine, but I can't
recommend this recording to Dylan fans. The performance of
'Knockin' On Heaven's Door' has substantially different lyrics
here, and is the most interesting cut on the CD. The packaging is
mostly black, with a single photo of Dylan and Neil Young at the
concert. (Anthony Kapolka)

BIABH: None of this material features either Mike
Bloomfield or Al Kooper, and less than half of it is live.
rmd: Sound on the Hawks tracks is pretty good. The
Philadelphia tracks sound like they are recordings of a poorly
amplified concert- there is no static, but the music is distorted
and distant, yielding only a fair sound. The jewel box is molded
from blue plastic, and packaging is average. Overall the sound is
quite a step below Record Document's other Dylan CDs. (Anthony
Kopalka)
NOTE: Cloned and more accurately repackaged as "The Session."

DEEP: A stunning quality presentation of the dynamite Troy,
NY show from earlier this year, supplemented by tunes Bob pulled
out only once or twice on this leg, and what tunes they are. No
need to ramble on about this one, it's simply
"mahvelous," both in performance terms and sound.
rmd: The best reason to get this is for the filler, covering the highlights from the February 1999 tour. So you get a great single show in top notch quality, and the best of the rest of the concerts.
rmd: Sound quality is pristine throughout, and performance is about as good as it got during that tour. But it really can't compare to the blistering peaks reached in November during the Phil Lesh tour.
NOTE: The bulk of the filler also appears on the compilation "Les Bon Moments."

LONG DISTANCE OPERATOR
Wanted Man WMM001 [T-218]
Berkeley Community Theater (Berkeley, CA); December 4, 1965
Tracklist: Tombstone Blues, I Don't Believe You, Baby Let Me Follow
You Down, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Long Distance Operator, It
Ain't Me Babe, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Positively Fourth Street, Like
A Rolling Stone
Heylin: Although only an average audience tape, its
historical import as the only substantial Dylan/Hawks tape from
1965 outweighs any sonic reservations.
rmd: Despite the vintage of the source tape, the sound
quality is surprisingly listenable. Dylan and The Hawks sound
noticeably different here than they did during the 1966 England
tour -- not as fiery or intense, but that's not to say not as good.
In some ways, the performance here might be musically superior to
the ones from England, but that is hard to tell from a 1965
audience recording. For me, the three songs that stand out are the
three songs not performed in England. "Long Distance
Operator" is the only surviving performance of this song by
Dylan...and it's quite good. "It Ain't Me Babe" is an
electric arrangement unlike any other Dylan has played -- much
different and much better than the one from 9/3/65 Hollywood Bowl.
And, finally, the "Positively 4th Street" is, I believe,
the best quality 1960's performance of this song...and easily the
best live version I have heard. So, while the sound quality may be
a tad rough, this CD is still a most thrilling listen.

LOST AND FOUND
Voxx 1D
This disc includes Dylan's harmonica backup on Ringo Starr's April 14, 1987 recording of "I Wish I Know Now What I Knew Then." The principal content is a collection of studio outtakes and rough mixes from Starr and from George Harrison.

out. Highly recommended.

LOVE SONGS FOR AMERICA
Swingin' Pig 055-1/2 [T-128]

Bleeding)
rmd: The CD is a tad better sounding then the circulating
tape, perhaps the effect of Swinging Pig's NoNoise processing). I
As far as concerts go, this one is just average... I've heard
better and heard worse. Packaging is adequate... white and black
low budget appearance. (Anthony Kopalka)
Very good sound. Definitely worth getting. (Matthew Zuckerman)

McTell, Highway 61 Revisited, Like A Rolling Stone, Don't Think
Twice, Love Sick, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35

(3) I Want You, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, Stone Walls And Steel
Bars, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, My Back Pages
(4) Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, Forever
Young
DEEP: The sound on the Wembley tracks is harsh and tinny
with no bottom, the vocals are thin and the whole thing is a
disaster. The Wembley part of this set is a throwaway due to the
sound. The same cannot be said about the filler from Bournemouth
and Cardiff, the quality of which is truly outstanding. But the 3
Pope tracks carry a fair amount of hiss. Despite the beautiful
packaging with color photos from the gig, imaginative graphics and
a transcript of an interview as liner notes, this one is for
completists only. Its snazzy look belies the quality of most of the
content.

ISIS: This disc seems to be a copy of "Peco's Blues," the other
Pat Garrett cd. I have always enjoyed these outtakes a lot,
for some reason. Dylan seems to be very relaxed and enjoys himself
a lot on these takes. If you haven't got it yet, you should get
it!

LUCKY NOT TO BE DESTROYED
Lucky 005/6 [T-531]
Pinede de Juan-Les-Pins (Antibes, France); July 12, 1992
Tracklist: Hey Joe, I Want You, Maggie's Farm, Simple Twist Of
Fate, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight,
Memphis Blues Again, To Ramona, It Ain't Me Babe, Desolation Row,
Don't Think Twice, Highway 61 Revisited, Joey, Times They Are A-
Changin', Like A Rolling Stone, Just Like A Woman, All Along The
Watchtower, Blowin' In The Wind
DEEP: An interesting show, to say the least, made more
interesting as it's the last one of the European summer tour and
they sound like they're playing together for the first time! Bob
bobs and weaves his way through an 18 song set with much
difficulty, his raspy growl worse for wear as he navigates through
an oft-times out of tune and off-key performance by the band.
Maybe they thought the previous gig was the last of the tour and
celebrated a bit prematurely. Anyway, they got through it (with
much difficulty) and Lucky gives us a nice quality peek at what
went down. For all the negatives, it's got a certain charm, a
sweetness, it's got life to it. It breathes, raspy and phlegmy and
inconsistently, but it hacks on nonetheless.
CDG: A very good performance; the sound quality is very
listenable, despite noticeable hiss.
rmd: Sounds much poorer than the circulating tapes. (Masato
Kato)
