DEEP: The finale of the MSG residency, in the razor sharp, crisp sound that we've come to expect from prior Cat releases. While not the best show, the sound is outstanding with all instruments ringing true and bubbling perfectly just under Bob's impeccable roar. What sets this one apart are the carefully selected and well-chosen bonus tracks. Further plaudits to the artwork, design and 2 booklets containing beautiful color pics taken from the show. Gorgeous package.

NOTE: Attribution of filler tracks is tenative; Munich was only '84 date at which all songs were performed, and track order matches concert order.

MADRID '99

(3) Aston Villa Leisure Centre (Birmingham, UK); April 2, 1995
(4) Brighton Centre (Brighton, UK); March 26, 1995

Tracklist: (1) Drifter's Escape, Se¤or, All Along The Watchtower, Shooting Star, Most Likely You Go Your Way, Silvio, Tangled Up In Blue, Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, God Knows, I Shall Be Released, Seeing The Real You At Last, Like A Rolling Stone,The Times They Are A-Changin', Rainy Day Women #12 ∧ 35
(2) Like A Rolling Stone (w/Rolling Stones), Drifter's Escape, It Takes A Lot To Laugh, All Along The Watchtower
(3) I Want You
(4) What Good Am I

DEEP: The taper got to the show a little late, as the fade in halfway through "Se¤or" opens things up on this 2CD set. The quality is OK - nowhere near the killer levels of the best '95 discs, but not sinking to the level of "With One Hand Waving Free." Vocals are distinct, though not as upfront as we'd like, and the band is easily discerned. A great set list redeems the few flaws. Are there any superlatives left to adequately address the emotion and sincerity in Dylan's vocal delivery and phrasing? His passion for this material is unquestionable - the man keeps on delivering. Bonus trax are good quality save for the dire sound on the Stones "Like A Rolling Stone," w/Dylan providing backup. Not fit for human ears. Overall, not a bad set when considering the set list, though more care could have been taken w/the bonus trax and overcoming the few flaws. Better than nothing,... I'll give it a tepid recommendation.

(3) State Theater (Portland, ME) April 21, 1996

Tracklist: (1) Drifter's Escape, Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You, All Along The Watchtower, You're A Big Girl Now, This Wheel's On Fire, Silvio, Tangled Up In Blue, Vision's Of Johanna, John Brown, Memphis Blues Again, Simple Twist Of Fate, Seven Days, Alabama Getaway, Forever Young
(2) Crash On The Levee, Man In The Long Black Coat, Positively Fourth Street, Pledging My Time, Mr Tambourine Man, Desolation Row, Friend Of The Devil, Maggie's Farm, What Good Am I, Times They Are A-Changin'
(3) Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat, If Not For You, Under The Red Sky, Mama You Been On My Mind, Masters Of War, When I Paint My Masterpiece, My Back Pages

DEEP: The first release to emerge documenting the brief April/May US dates of '96, and a fine document it is. The Portland shows were notable for the variety of material performed - all told we have 31 different songs included on these 3 disks, every tune Dylan did at this residency save "Rainy Day Women." Quality is very good, though not great, but a fine recording nonetheless. Nice, smooth sound and clear instrumentation on all 3 disks, with crisp sounding and energetic vocals. Bob and the band were obviously in fine form on all 3 nights here. The harp is put to the test a lot and Bob simmers through most of the solos. Can't say enough about Bucky either. Many, many great performances from the three nights, nicely done and thankfully documented by Razor's Edge.

THE MAN THE MASTER

Banzai 030/031 [T-409]

Stadio Communale (San Remo, Italy); July 7, 1994

Tracklist: The Man In Me, All Along The Watchtower, I Don't Believe You, Tangled Up In Blue, Positively Fourth Street, Love Minus Zero, Masters Of War, Don't Think Twice, Highway 61 Revisited, Shelter From The Storm, I Believe In You, Maggie's Farm, Ballad Of A Thin Man, It Ain't Me Babe

DEEP: Superb sounding 2CD set. Quality is excellent, voice way up front & band all there too. They should all sound like this.

NOTE: A fan-produced variant of this set restores the concert's opening song, "Jokerman," from a lower-grade source recording.

MANCHESTER PRAYER

Swingin' Pig 054 [T-120]

(1) Free Trade Hall (Manchester, UK); May 17, 1966
(2) Royal Albert Hall (London, UK); May 27, 1966

Tracklist: (1) She Belongs To Me, Fourth Time Around, Visions Of Johanna, It's All Over Now, Baby Blue
(2) Desolation Row, Just Like A Woman, Mr. Tambourine Man

NOTE: To be avoided. The first four tracks have now been officially released, while more complete versions of the London show circulate freely.

rmd: The sound quality is excellent. This is the best sounding of the '66 tour CDs. These songs are all acoustic, and Dylan's performance sounds less hindered by drugs then so many of the '66 shows. Annoyingly, the last cut is faded out. (Anthony Kapolka)

Heylin: A suberb declicked version of the acoustic set from Dylan's fabled gig, taken directly from Columbia acetates.

MAPLE LEAF GARDENS 1975

Heartbreakers 924 1/2

Maple Leaf Gardens (Toronto, ON); December 2, 1975

Tracklist: When I Paint My Masterpiece, It Ain't Me Babe, Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, Romance In Durango, Isis, Blowin' In the Wind, I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine, Mama You Been On My Mind, Dark As A Dungeon, I Shall Be Released, Mr Tambourine Man, Tangled Up In Blue, Oh Sister, Hurricane, One More Cup Of Coffee, Sara, Just Like A Woman, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, This Land Is Your Land

DEEP: The complete Dylan performances from the second Toronto RTR gig. Quality-wise, this set gets the nod over
"Flaggin' Down The Double E's," owing to its overall more robust and fuller sound. Adjust your ear to this one and then sit back and revel in all its raging glory and subtle nuances. These are regal readings, performances that deserve better than a good audience recording. It's scary to wonder the impact these would have should we ever be blessed with professional recordings. Cool cover of Dylan lying on backstage sofa, strumming guitar, with an RT live group shot on rear.

rmd: Sound quality is very good, once you get past thefirst two songs. It's nice to have a complete Budokan show.

MASTER OF ZURICH

LR 011/012 [T-658]

(1) Hallenstadion (Zurich, Switzerland); April 25, 1999
(2) Le Dome (Marseilles, France); April 23, 1999

Tracklist: (1) Cocaine Blues, Mr. Tambourine Man, Masters Of War, Girl From The North Country, Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, Tangled Up In Blue, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Can't Wait, Not Dark Yet, Memphis Blues Again, Make You Feel My Love, Highway 61 Revisited, Love Sick, To Be Alone With You, Don't Think Twice, Not Fade Away
(2) Visions Of Johanna, It Ain't Me Babe, Times They Are A- Changin', Just Like A Woman

DEEP: Crunchy, upfront amd outstanding sound quality on the Zurich show. Too tiresome to conjure up any more adjectives to describe Bob's performance, or the performance of the crack band during the Euro '98 trek, where Bob presented a revamped show that opened with 7 acoustic numbers. Suffice it to say that the Zurich show is strong and tight and finds Bob in top form. Quality falls a bit on the filler from Marseilles, despite the always welcome "Visions Of Johanna." The smartly designed package includes snazzy graphics and terrific color pictures from the actual show.

rmd: A beautifully packaged, great sounding set. The vocals are clear and upfront and there is nice separation. A superb performance, brought to a rousing finish when Springsteen's guitarists Nils Lofgren and Steve Van Zandt join the band for a the final encore.

MASTERS (BobDylan.com)

Wild Wolf 1CD

live tracks 1992-1999 from www.bobdylan.com

Tracklist: Not Fade Away (Troy, NY 2/22/99), Man In The Long Black Coat (Tampa 1/30/99), To Be Alone With You (Troy, NY 2/22/99), Never Gonna Be The Same Again (Tampa 1/30/99), Don't Think Twice (Troy, NY 2/22/99), Visions Of Johanna (Portland, ME 2/25/99), Friend Of The Devil (Nurnberg, 5/31/98), Watching the River Flow (Tallahassee, 2/1/99), Make You Feel My Love (Los Angeles 5/21/98), Tears Of Rage (Troy, NY 2/22/99), Love Sick (undetermined), Se¤or (Lucca, Italy 7/6/98), I And I (Dijon 7/1/98)

NOTE: By most reports, the Wild Wolf claim to have accessed master tapes is false; the source for this disc appears to be the bobdylan.com files. Several tracks are misattributed by the CD packaging, including "Visions Of Johanna," "Tears Of Rage," and "Love Sick." Despite some reports otherwise, these are audience recordings. An identical (and apparently earlier) semiprofessional release circulates as
"The Genuine Internet Series Vol. 1."

DEEP: A 13-track compilation culled from master tape sources, as opposed to website downloads. Only 2 performances overlap "From The Vaults I," and the mixes make both seem different. Overall, most of these versions/mixes seem more "true" and robust, with a smoother, fuller sound. Quality on the tracks here is superb. Altogether, a mighty fine listen and great cover shot of Bob in the studio.

rmd: The quality is astounding, as are the performances, An amazing document of Dylan in early 1999. Essential.

DEEP: Excellent show, just shy of excellent quality - nice balance and separation, a clear distinct mix with Bob's vocals riding nicely above the fray. The performances are terrific. Setlist is quite the doozy, too. Nice package with color pics from the show.

Tracklist: She Belongs To Me, Fourth Time Around, Visions Of Johanna, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Desolation Row, Just Like A Woman, Baby Let Me Follow You Down, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Tell Me Momma (cut)

EDLIS: The best of the four available CDs of this famous show for sound quality; the tape seems to have been remastered. The cover shows a William Stout cartoon of Dylan emerging from a kangaroo's pouch, reduced from the cover of the vinyl boot LP.

EDLIS: While the sound on T-290 is superior, this disc includes an otherwise unavailable snippet from the 1978 radio broadcast narration. This CD has three green and white photographs of Dylan playing in his wonderful hound's tooth suit!

(2) If You See Her, Just Like A Woman, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Mr. Tambourine Man, Seeing The Real You At Last, I'll Remember You, Knockin' On Heaven's Door
(3) Restless Farewell

DEEP: The interesting and surprise filled "free" Edge show whose purpose was (pick 'em): 1) warm-up rehearsal for the fall tour, or 2) Dylan's tribute/goodbye to Garcia, or 3) a little of both. Whatever it was, it turned out to be a most esoteric of "shows," with no less than 6 rarely-if-ever played tunes and some commoners given drastic new arrangements. The sound quality, given the tight security circumstances at this show, is not up to the high standards of the best 95's; however, the sound is well balanced and, although Bob's vocals are not as upfront as we'd like, they are clear and distinct. Best are the "slower" tunes, where the sound nuances and vocalizing are a bit more distinctive. Anyway, this is an extremely enjoyable disk and a show unlike one we will ever hear again. The filler trax are quite good, albeit a bit high end biased. Another one that goes out highly recommended.

CDG: While the sound quality may be below average for recent shows, it's good enough to listen to -- and the setlist alone makes it worthwhile. Well-chosen filler, too.

(3) Flynn Theater (Burlington, VT); October 11, 1994
(4) Warner Theater (Washington, DC); October 31, 1994

Tracklist: (1) Down In The Flood, If Not For You, All Along The Watchtower, Just Like A Woman, Tangled Up In Blue, Queen Jane Approximately, Mr. Tambourine Man, Boots Of Spanish Leather, Don't Think Twice, Dignity, I And I, Maggie's Farm, Like A Rolling Stone, It Ain't Me Babe
(2) Man In The Long Black Coat, God Knows
(3) She Belongs To Me, My Back Pages
(4) Masters Of War, Disease Of Conceit

DEEP Quality: excellent, ranking up there with the best of any tour in terms of audience recordings. Punchy, well balanced, upfront vocals and instruments. Great show in performance and sound. Standard set list from the first two weeks of 1995. Kudos to the Tuff Bites cover artist for another in a brilliant run of caricatures. Highly recommended.

(1) Harbor Station; (St. Johns, New Brunswick); April 8, 1997
(2) Memorial Stadium; (St. Johns, Newfoundland); April 1, 1997

Tracklist: (1) Down In The Flood, If Not For You, All Along The Watchtower, Simple Twist Of Fate, I Don't Believe You, Silvio, O Babe It Ain't No Lie, Tangled Up In Blue , Girl Of The North Country, Memphis Blues Again, Born In Time, Maggie's Farm, Like A Rolling Stone, Don't Think Twice, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35
(2) Seņor, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Forever Young, O Babe It Ain't No Lie

DEEP: A fine quality show that benefits from a bit of a boost to the highs on your system, and one that after repeated listenings has become a favorite of sorts. Sublime performances of some rarely played tunes set this apart from the "ordinary." Dylan rips into each vocal nicely, running the gamut from tough to tender. The acoustic set is particularly intriguing. An interesting setlist and performance.

MIND OUT OF TIME

Crystal Cat 4572 1CD

"Love Sick," "Not Dark Yet" Cd-single B- sides

Tracklist: Love Sick, Blind Willie McTell, Cold Irons Bound, Can't Wait, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Born In Time, Boots Of Spanish Leather, Tombstone Blues, Million Miles, Not Dark Yet, Roving Gambler, Cocaine Blues

NOTE: To be avoided. Although this disc was originally reputed to be a collection of outtakes from Time Out Of Mind, it proved to be a collection of live performances, mostly of TOOM songs, mostly if not entirely pirated from officially released CD singles.

THE MINNESOTA TAPES

Wanted Man WMM 033/034/035 [T-318]

(1) Minnesota Party Tape (Minneapolis, MN); May 24, 1961
(2) Minnesota Hotel Tape (Minneapolis, MN); December 22, 1961

Tracklist: (1) Ramblin' Round, Death Don't Have No Mercy, It's Hard To Be Blind, This Train Is Bound For Glory, Harp Blues, Talking Fish Blues, Pastures Of Plenty, Railroad Bill, Will The Circle Be Unbroken, Man Of Constant Sorrow, Pretty Polly, Railroad Boy, James Alley Blues, Why'd You Cut My Hair?, This Land Is Your Land, Still A Fool, Wild Mountain Thyme, Howdido, Car Car, Don't You Push Me Down, Come See, I Want It Now, San Francisco Bay Blues, A Long Time A Growin', Devilish Mary
(2) Candy Man, Baby Please Don't Go, Hard Times In New York, Stealin', Poor Lazarus, I Ain't Got No Home, It's Hard to Be Blind, Dink's Song, Man of Constant Sorrow, East Orange, Omie Wise, Wade in the Water, I Was Young When I Left Home, In The Evening When The Sun Goes Down, Baby Let Me Follow You Down, Sally Gal, Gospel Plow, Long John, Cocaine, VD Waltz, VD Blues, VD City, VD Gunner's Blues, See That My Grave is Kept Clean, Ramblin' Round, Black Cross

NOTE: By some reports, material from the December tape interrupts the May tape in the sequencing on these CDs. A reportedly improved variant of this set circulates on CDR, presumably a fan project.

AMG: Bob Dylan at his most Woody Guthrie-esque, performing a couple of dozen songs by the folk-legend, as well as many traditional numbers. But there's no getting around the relatively low sound quality of the crude source tapes in many places.

rmd: The May tape is historically interesting, but the performances and the sound quality are disappointing. The December tape, however, is essential and constantly rewarding. It is the best recording we have of the young folksinger Bob Dylan, before he began writing his own songs. It's much, much better than the first album. The packaging is mediocre at best.

MINSTREL BOY

World WPOCM 0690 D 053 [T-127]

Isle of Wight; August 31, 1969

Tracklist: She Belongs To Me, I Threw It All Away. Maggie's Farm. Wild Mountain Thyme, It Ain't Me Babe, To Ramona, Lay Lady Lay, Highway 61 Revisited, One Too Many Mornings, I Pity The Poor Immigrant, Like A Rolling Stone, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, Quinn The Eskimo, Minstrel Boy, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, Mr Tambourine Man, I Dreamed I Saw St Augustine

rmd: The first CD of the Isle Of Wight, and an attempt to make a CD from best sources. However, some heavy handed person on the fader has made this CD almost worthless. Every track is faded and often in the middle of the first or last line. (Les Kokay)
Well, it is nice to get all the cuts from this concert, albeit somewhat out of order. The variation in sound quality on this recording is surprising. Many cuts are clear, excellent sound; on others, Dylan's singing is almost inaudible, with slight feedback. Some of the cuts fade in and out. Pleasant, if somewhat uninspired, music. The packaging includes a color photo of Dylan at the concert, and reproduces a promotional poster for the show.

THE MONO MIXES - BLONDE ON BLONDE & HIGHWAY 61

Gold Standard BN 339 2CD [T-384]

DEEP: The title is self-explanatory. Both albums in mono, plus "Positively 4th Street" and "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window" mono singles. Mastered from very clean mono pressings as surface noise, pops, etc. barely discernible. Cheaper than buying original mono pressings of the albums.

Heylin: Pointless.

MONTEREY, CA; 5/27/95

BOSL 1D

Laguna Seca Daze (Monterey, CA); May 27, 1995 (line)

Tracklist: Down In The Flood, It Takes A Lot To Laugh, All Along The Watchtower, Simple Twist Of Faith, Silvio, Tombstone Blues, Seeing The Real You At Last, Every Grain Of Sand, Memphis Blues Again, Knockin' On Heaven's Door

NOTE: To be avoided. Cloned from the undesireable

MONTREAL 1962 NEW YORK 1961

Evil 002 [T-103]

(1) Gaslight Cafe (New York, NY); September 6, 1961
(2) Finjan Club (Montreal, QU); July 2, 1962

Trackist: (1) Man On The Street, He Was A Friend Of Mine, Talkin' Bear Mountain Picnic Massacre Blues, Car Car (w/Dave Van Ronk), Pretty Polly
(2) Two Trains Runnin', Ramblin' On My Mind, Death Of Emmett Till, Stealin', Hiram Hubbard, Blowin' In The Wind, Rocks And Gravel, Quit Your Low Down Ways, He Was A Friend Of Mine, Let Me Die In My Footsteps

rmd: This CD is a good example of why people dislike bootlegs. The track listing contains numerous errors. The sound quality is not good, about the same as my Nth generation tape of the performance. The vocals are clear, but there is a lot of static and a constant hiss. (Anthony Kapolka)

NOTE: Not recommended. Aside from scrambling the tracks from the First Gaslight Tape, the disc also omits "Song To Woody." Sometimes listed in error as "Twenty Years Ago Again," because that logo (for an entire line of pseudo-legitimate releases) is more prominent on the packaging than the actual title.

MORE MUSIC FROM BIG PINK

Early Years 02CD3319 [T-125]

Basement Tapes summer 1967

Tracklist: All You Have To Do Is Dream, I Can't Make It Alone, Bonnie Ship The Diamond, Young But Daily Growin', One Man's Loss, Hills Of Mexico, One For The Road, Song For Canada, Try Me Little Girl, I Don't Hurt Anymore, People Get Ready, Baby Ain't That Fine, A Night Without Sleep, A Fool Such As I, Gonna Get You Now, Stones That You Throw

rmd: This is, of course, music taped during the Basement Tapes sessions. The recording quality of this music varies quite a bit. Overall, the sound is below average. A few cuts do stand out, however - perhaps because the music is seductive. Replicates a vinyl boot of the same name. (Anthony Kapolka)

NOTE: This CD is apparently also known as "The Lost Basement Tapes."

MORE SUNRISES

Red Sky 1015 [T-002]

various locations 1990

Tracklist: I'll Remember You, Simple Twist Of Fate, Desolation Row, Boots Of Spanish Leather, What Was It You Wanted, Hard Rain's A- Gonna Fall, You're A Big Girl Now, What Good Am I, Girl From The North Country, Ballad Of Hollis Brown, Man In The Long Black Coat, Positively Fourth Street, Queen Jane Approximately, Just Like A Woman, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)

DEEP: Another excellent quality compilation with an interesting track selection, not to mention several compelling renditions. And wonder of wonders, it's even got a decent cover, with a clear tray and a picture behind the disk. Highly recommended for 1990 lovers.

MOST BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY IN THE WORLD

unidentified label BG-05 2D

(Collegno, Italy); July 9, 1998

MOVING VIOLATION

Condor/Toasted 1966 [T-130]

Rundown Studios (Santa Monica, CA); January 30, 1978

Tracklist: I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, The Times They Are A- Changin', If You See Her Say Hello, I Don't Believe You, Tomorrow Is A Long Time, You're A Big Girl Now, Simple Twist Of Fate, If You See Her Say Hello, I Don't Believe You, I Threw It All Away, Maggie's Farm, Repossession Blues, Girl From The North Country, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)

rmd: The sound quality is not so great on some of this, especially if you are using headphones. But generally, I am glad I have it. (Paul Bullen)

NOTE: "Darkness At The Break Of Noon" includes all of this material and is often reported as being in superior sound quality.

MR. TAMBOURINE MAN VOL 1

Banana 012-A [T-359]

Philharmonic Hall (New York, NY); October 31, 1964

Tracklist: Times They Are A-Changin', Spanish Harlem Incident, Talkin' John Birch Paranoid Blues, To Ramona, Gates Of Eden, If You Gotta Go Go Now, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), I Don't Believe You, Who Killed Davey Moore?

MR. TAMBOURINE MAN VOL 2

Banana 012-B [T-360]

Philharmonic Hall (New York, NY); October 31, 1964

Tracklist: Mr. Tambourine Man, Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, Talking World War III Blues, Don't Think Twice, Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, *Mama You Been On My Mind, *With God On Our Side, *It Ain't Me Babe, All I Really Want To Do (* duet with Joan Baez)

rmd: The sound quality is very good, but the hiss level is high. However, this is the only release that I know of which presents the performance at the correct speed (but I haven't heard all of them). This is one of Dylan's best circulating early concerts.

MR. TAMBOURINE MAN VOL 3

Banana 012-C [T-313]

Free Trade Hall (Manchester, UK); May 17, 1966

Tracklist: Tell Me Momma, I Don't Believe You, Baby Let Me Follow You Down, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Leopardskin Pillbox Hat, One Too Many Mornings, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Like A Rolling Stone

NOTE: The CD packaging reportedly identifies this as the May 27, 1966 London performance, but it is presumably the Manchester set now available as an official release.

MR. TAMBOURINE MAN VOL.4

Banana 012-D [T-314]

Lake Compounce (Bristol, CT); September 4, 1988 (line)

Tracklist: Subterranean Homesick Blues, I Don't Believe You, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Had A Dream About You Baby, Simple Twist Of Fate, Highway 61 Revisited, Don't Think Twice (A), Knockin' On Heaven's Door (A), Silvio, I Shall Be Released, Like A Rolling Stone, It Ain't Me Babe (A), Masters Of War, Maggie's Farm

TO BE AVOIDED: This CD omits the first two acoustic tracks, neither common in 1988.

MUDPLEX

Mudrock 1/2 3CD [T-611]

(1) Mud Island (Memphis, TN); July 26, 1988
(2) Starplex (Dallas, TX); July 28, 1988

Tracklist: (1) Subterranean Homesick Blues, Absolutely Sweet Marie, Highway 61 Revisited, You're A Big Girl Now, Masters Of War, Memphis Blues Again, Boots Of Spanish Leather, Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, Barbara Allen, It Ain't Me Babe, I Shall Be Released, Silvio, In The Garden, Like A Rolling Stone, Times They Are A-Changin', Forever Young, All Along The Watchtower
(2) Subterranean Homesick Blues, My Back Pages, Highway 61 Revisited, Every Grain Of Sand, Masters Of War, Memphis Blues Again, Love Minus Zero, Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, Barbara Allen, It Ain't Me Babe, I Shall Be Released, Silvio, Like A Rolling Stone, To Ramona, Blowin' In The Wind, All Along The Watchtower

DEEP: A triple set coupling two complete '88 shows on 3 disks that probably should have been limited to the first show + filler. Quality on the Memphis set is quite good, with clear, upfront vocals and distinct, well balanced instrumentation. Performance is a dandy, full of vocal twists and turns with some drastic rearranging of vintage classics. The acoustic set is terrific, with Dylan's vocals strong and hard-hitting. The quality is simply fair to middling on the Starplex show, even a bit lame on the electric numbers. The softer, acoustic material suffers less but is still left wanting. A pity, too, as the setlist is a treat. A 3 disk set with 2 disks worth of worthwhile material.
