(2) Endless Highway, The Shape I'm In; Highway 61 Revisited, Like

DEEP: A killer soundboard recording that easily eclipses the
previously available circulating boards from Boston and New York
City. Almost complete, the sound is oh so fine - clear and
distinct, packing a wallop and perfectly mixed between voice and
instruments with nice separation. Contains both Bob and The Band's
sets and the performances are explosive Sublime stuff. For those
who think '74 was "ho-hum," this one will turn some heads
and make you reevaluate. Nice package with some fine pics from the
tour. Awesome set!
NOTE: For the afternoon show, the CDs include all the
Band's performances except "The Shape I'm In," which
appears on Before The Flood.

Twice, Knockin' On Heaven's Door
DEEP: This is the full show from '92 Waikiki presented in
amazing, in your face, take no prisoners quality - from the Board!
Quality here, IMO, exceeds that of both Marseilles '93 and Monterey
'95. The mix is perfect w/Bob's voice well upfront but not too
dominating and every instrumental nuance ringing clear and true. A
fine show that grows better with each listen and includes a few
truly transcendent moments. Move this to the top of the '92 list.
Bonus tracks are well-selected, a nice complement to an already
stellar collection. Very attractive looking package patterned
after the Elvis soundtrack of the same name. Overall, a more-than-
excellent effort.
rmd: Beautiful sound quality; one of the best soundboards
around. In terms of performance, though, ... But despite singing
through his sinus cavities and enunciating like a drunken student
practicing a new languages, he pulls a few tricks out of the bag,
particularly an outstanding "Golden Vanity." The band
sounds great, and the cover is clever.

DEEP: Dylan's last show of the year proved to be one of the highlights. An exceptionally strong and energetic vocal performance, with Dylan attacking every song. The backing is no less impressive, especially the strong guitar work by JJ. Sound here is excellent, crisp and clean and well balanced, with Dylan's vocals upfront, loud and clear (some may find the sound a bit high end biased but a bit of the eq helps even things out). A great, great show captured extremely well by the Edgers. A nice selection from the previous night puts this one over the top.
ISIS: Philadelphia was the night it really came together. Recording quality is excellent; the bonus tracks are well chosen, rounding out a superb disc.
CDG: High-quality recording of a great performance, with excellent filler.

rmd: This is a picture CD, although the picture is from 1969
- and the insert includes a picture snipped from the Isle of Wight
promotional poster!) Despite these anachronisms, the packaging for
this disk is attractive. The sound quality is good, although there
is slight static and a few soft ticks, perhaps from vinyl. The
music is mostly compelling.

NOTE: The title of this disc should be "Pecos

title is now standard, and the song title is often listed
incorrectly as well. The reference is to the Pecos River in
Texas.
DEEP: Almost perfect quality and very enjoyable
material.
EDLIS: Fans of the film will find it marvelous. Much of
what circulates on tape is here.
rmd: An incredible glimpse of Dylan in the studio. A
stripped down, bare bones, look at some great music. Both
performance and sound are excellent, and the comments between takes
quite revealing.

DEEP: Quality of the recordings is superb and the
performances are, well, words can't describe. It's like trying to
describe one of Michael Jordan's best games - they are all so good
but when he takes it to another level you are left speechless. The
bonus trax sustain the heights attained the previous night. Do
yourself a favor and get it.

Blowin' In The Wind (2/14E)
DEEP: Every song Dylan played on the 1974 tour is
represented on this set; Some rare live stuff here and, as one
would expect, the quality is a little uneven. Well represented are
the previously released 1974 Boston and New York soundboards. The
rest are audience recordings which run the gamut from fair to very
good, with nothing unlistenable and most very enjoyable. This was
not my favorite tour but it is a real treat to hear the Planet
Waves stuff live, Nice color front and back covers, by the
way.)
EDLIS: This is my favorite CD title from 74 tour. For those
who might not be too impressed with the other official and
unofficial releases from the 74 tour, if you can stand the variable
quality, then this might change your mind on the 74 tour.

NOTE: The packaging for this CD reportedly several errors,
most spectacularly misidentifying "Drifter's Escape" as
"World Gone Wrong."

A PHOENIX IN APRIL
Not actually a discrete release, but the first two discs from "Genuine Live 1966" which circulate separately as CDR copies. The discs include the complete April 13, 1966 Sydney concert.

rmd: A tremendous performance, but the sound is only so-so.

PILL BOX
TNT 940157/58 [T-367]
ABC Theater (Edinburgh, Scotland); May 20, 1966
Tracklist: She Belongs To Me, Fourth Time Around, Visions Of
Johanna, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Desolation Row, Just Like A
Woman, Mr. Tambourine Man, Tell Me Momma, I Don't Believe You, Baby
Let Me Follow You Down, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Leopard-Skin
Pill-Box Hat, One Too Many Mornings, Ballad of a Thin Man, Like A
Rolling Stone
BIABH: A rather distant and distorted audience recording;
sound quality is poor. The performance, on the other hand, is
probably the best from the 1966 tour. On that basis alone I would
strongly recommend this one!
rmd: Although sound quality is poor, I think anyone who has
assimilated the popular mythology of 5/17/66 Manchester has to hear
Edinburgh. Dylan's performance in the acoustic set is *far*
better; the electric set is almost as good as 5/17; and the
audience reaction is pretty damn enthusiastic for much of the show.
(JC)
For die-hard completists only; surely not a pleasant listening
experience no matter how good the actual performance is. The sound
is very distant and somewhat distorted, with very conspicuous hiss.

Red Sky 1011 [T-420]
(1) Station Square (Pittsburgh, PA); August 19, 1994

Tracklist: (1) Jokerman, Seņor, All Along The Watchtower, Positively Fourth Street, Cat's In The Well, In The Garden, Maggie's Farm, Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
(2) Under The Red Sky, Lenny Bruce
DEEP: Not up to the high standards of previous Red Sky releases, redeemed only by the presence of a sublime "Hard Rain." Only 8 trax from Pittsburgh leaves one wondering why they included so many standards. Disk is full (76+). Red Sky releases contain arguably the worst cover art ever, and this is among their worst. Very mild recommendation.
rmd: Avoid at all costs! Overcooked to the nines, and very, very lackluster. The quieter tracks are easier to tolerate, but don't salvage the disc.

(2) Highway 61 Revisited, Just Like A Woman, Seeing The Real You At Last, Like A Rolling Stone, Forever Young (w/Bruce Springsteen)
(3) Restless Farewell
DEEP: Another fine performance by Dylan and band once again, with the quality up to Crystal Cat's usual high standards. A great setlist that includes several not-oft played tunes. Dylan is in good voice throughout, though at times the energy drags a bit. It's very workmanlike - not a great performance but a good one. The R&R HOF tracks are the best sound of any I've heard, and "Restless Farewell" is up to snuff with other releases. A very enjoyable
disk.
CDG: Topflight audience recording of a great performance. Although the filler tracks are in excellent quality, they have turned up on quite a few other discs.

PLEDGING MY TIME
A Priory 1CD
To be avoided. This is a pirate disc repackaging classic
studio tracks from the 1960s, usually selling at an inflated

DEEP: The sound quality throughout is excellent. All in
all, a very nice collection and well thought out. It doesn't hurt
that very good quality source tapes were used. It's clear that the
cover and insert graphics were computer generated, not printed, but
they did a nice job.

(1) Oh, Sister, One More Cup of Coffee, Sara, Just Like A Woman, I

(2) Hard Rain, Romance In Durango, Isis, Blowin' In The Wind, The
Water Is Wide, I Dreamed I Saw St Augustine, Never Let Me Go, I
Shall Be Released, Knockin' On Heaven's Door
DEEP: A truly outstanding disk that presents the complete
circulating tracks from the superb sounding Plymouth, MA board (7)
plus well-selected and appropriate filler from the long-available
Waterbury, CT (9) soundboard. For my money, these early Rolling
Thunder shows were far better than the shows of '76; they seem to
carry an edginess and spontaneity not as apparent on the '76 gigs.
Dylan's singing on the Plymouth tracks is amazing. Just as he did
with the whole of Desire, he was able to capture mystery on
stage on the first leg of Rolling Thunder, which is what makes
these songs unique. Incredible, upfront and true quality plus
performances to match, not to mention what is perhaps the coolest
pic of Dylan to ever grace a CD cover. Don't pass this one by.
CDG: The quality of these recordings is stunning and the
performances match that excellence.
rmd: If you want to hear the Desire sound produced
live, in good quality, with a delicious "live" feeling
and ambiance, then look no further. Dylan's voice carries an
expressive softness which I very much like. Most unlikely to
disappoint any listener.

Tom Thumb's Blues, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, It Ain't Me Babe,
Ballad Of A Thin Man, Stage Fright, The Night They Drove Old Dixie
Down, King Harvest, When You Awake, Up On Cripple Creek, All Along
The Watchtower, Ballad Of Hollis Brown, Knockin' On Heaven's Door,
The Times They Are A-Changin', Don't Think Twice, Gates Of Eden,
Just Like A Woman, Its Alright Ma, Rag Mama Rag, This Wheel's On
Fire, The Shape I'm In
(2) The Weight, Forever Young, Highway 61 Revisited, Like A Rolling Stone,
Maggie's Farm, Blowin' In the Wind
DEEP: This recording carries the whole of Dylan's set (less
one opening line) with no breaks between tracks, giving the
listener all the pre-song tuning which led into the opening riff of
each song. Well balanced with the vocals upfront and in your face
and each Band member easily heard in "all la glory." A
forceful performance from Dylan, although while listening I'm
reminded how much more I enjoy these same versions more than 20
years later with the current band. As great as the Band was/is, the
songs are not given any breathing room. It's as if between Dylan's
lines there are 5 soloists elbowing their way in to play their
riffs. Tracks are pretty standard although you do get several which
are not on the official tour document. All in all this is one fine
set.
rmd: This outing is one worth locating. Perfection it
ain't, but the clarity of the instrumentation and the upfront
vocals make it a much truer-to-being there experience than the all
too slickly Asylum Records version. Mucho energy and excitement in
the playing and in Bob's singing - about as good as it was going to
get in the 1974 Tour de Force. You can once again feel those old
Robbie Robertson/Garth Hudson motive forces kick in to transform
many songs into a whole other level of frenzied overdrive. One
that was born under fire, crafted out, and then became second
nature during their shows eight years earlier. This was proof that
they still had it and could still do it! (Bob Stacy)

POLITICAL WORLD
Westwood 61 1CD [T-138]
Hammersmith Odeon (London, UK); February 3-8, 1990
Tracklist: Political World, Where Teardrops Fall (2/8), Everything

Good Am I (2/4), Disease Of Conceit (2/8), What Was It You Wanted,
Hang Me Oh Hang Me (2/8), Tight Connection To My Heart, Forever
Young (2/7)
rmd: A compilation of excellent audience recordings from
Dylan's 1990 London residency. Even though I'd have preferred a
complete concert, I'm happy with this Oh Mercy pastiche.
The last three songs are excellent performances, and a welcome
addition. A direct copy of the LP boot "Deadpan Twist."
The CD itself sports a black and silver image of Bob, with an artsy
blue streak down the side. (Anthony Kapolka)
Nice quality audience recordings. The best tracks on the CD are
the three concluding "filler" tracks, after the songs
from Oh Mercy. My only complaint is that the CD clocks in
at just under 45 minutes, leaving about 30 minutes of wasted
space.

DEEP: A forgettable release with the Montreal '97 gig

Paris '95 that are abominable. Filled out with "My Blue Eyed
Jane" from the Jimmy Rodgers tribute. Avoid at all
costs.

PRECIOUS MEMORIES
Three Cool Cats 003 [T-134]
Westwood One Superstar Concert Series (Sydney, Australia); February
24-25, 1986 [US version]
Tracklist: Positively 4th Street, All Along The Watchtower,

Know; Johnny B. Goode, Breakdown [Petty]; Just Like A Woman,
Blowin' In The Wind, That Lucky Old Sun; So You Want To Be A Rock
'n' Roll Star, Spike [Petty]; Like A Rolling Stone, Knockin' On
Heaven's Door
rmd: The sound on this disc is excellent . No reason this
material couldn't be released legitimately; it really makes me wish
Columbia would have put out this instead of that awful Dylan And
The Dead album. Packaging is minimal, although attractive
enough, with no photos of Dylan or Petty to be seen.

Tracklist: (1) Maggie's Farm, Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With

35
(2) Absolutely Sweet Marie, Tough Mama, Roving Gambler, Watching
The River Flow, Blind Willie McTell
(3) Stone Walls And Steel Bars, Masters Of War, Forever Young
DEEP: The sound here is quite outstanding, actually, oh so
crisp and clean, with everything shining through with the utmost
clarity (slightly better than "You
Ain't Goin' Nowhere"). This one rates very high - it is
fiery and cocksure, to say the least. However, the less common
bonus tracks on the ES release make that particular set more
desirable.
