TS 1/2 [T-543]

(1) Bournemouth International Centre (Bournemouth, UK); October 1, 1997
(2) Bournemouth International Centre (Bournemouth, UK); October 2, 1997

Tracklist: (1) Absolutely Sweet Marie, Man In The Long Black Coat, Tough Mama, You Ain't Goin' Nowhere, Silvio, Cocaine Blues, Tangled Up In Blue, Mr Tambourine Man, Memphis Blues Again, Blind Willie McTell, Highway 61 Revisited, Like A Rolling Stone, Don't Think Twice, Love Sick, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35
(2) Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You, It Takes A Lot To Laugh, Roving Gambler, Love Minus Zero, God Knows, This Wheel's On Fire, Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat, It Ain't Me Babe

DEEP: Very, very good recording quality - crisp, clear vocals, distinct instrumentation, and well rounded sound. Notable for being the first debut performance of a Time Out Of Mind track, "Love Sick." Dylan picks up where he left off in September, kicking it into a high gear right from the opening bell. Not a tune here that isn't played with great conviction and purpose.

Tracklist: Absolutely Sweet Marie, The Man In Me, Cold Irons Bound, Just Like A Woman, Silvio, Stone Walls And Steel Bars, Masters Of War, Tangled Up In Blue, Make You Feel My Love, Highway 61 Revisited, Forever Young, Love Sick, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35

TALES OF A MEXICAN PAINTER

no label 2CDR

Sydney Stadium (Sydney, Australia); April 13 (or 16), 1966 (line)

Tracklist: She Belongs To Me, Fourth Time Around, Visions Of Johanna, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Desolation Row, Just Like A Woman, Mr. Tambourine Man, Tell Me Momma, I Don't Believe You, Baby let Me Follow You Down, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Leopardskin Pillbox Hat, One Too Many Mornings, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Positively Fourth Street

NOTE: Not a commercial release, but widely and freely circulated among the Dylan fan community. If you pay for this, you're being taken.

ISIS: A fine vocal performance. On the whole, the sound is very good for the first half and reasonably good for the electric half. It goes without saying that the performances are incandescent and rivetting. The perfect beauty and almost crushing, naked vulnerability Dylan achieved with his solo performances in 1966 remains astonishing at each hearing. In the electric set Dylan screams and spits out his lyrics with passion. The Sydney recording reveals Dylan, at the height of his fame, forging a musical path into unchartered territory, and taking most of his audience along with him.

TALES OF YANKEE POWER

Wanted Man WMM 011/012 [T-240]

Earls Court (London, UK); June 18, 1978

Tracklist: Love Her With A Feeling, Baby Stop Crying, Mr Tambourine Man, Shelter From The Storm, Love Minus Zero, Tangled Up In Blue, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Maggie's Farm, I Don't Believe You, Like A Rolling Stone, I Shall Be Released, Going Going Gone, One Of Us Must Know, You're A Big Girl Now, One More Cup Of Coffee, Blowin' In The Wind, I Want You, Se¤or, Masters Of War, Just Like A Woman, Oh Sister, All Along The Watchtower, All I Really Want To Do, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), Forever Young, The Times They Are A-Changin'

rmd: Not essential, but a fine example of Dylan live in 1978. Strong performances, decent sound quality, lame packaging. Better than Budokan by far. Some songs are cut, though.

TALKING TOO MUCH

Unreleased Bob Dylan In Concert LP acetate

Tracklist: Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie, Lay Down Your Weary Tune, Dusty Old Fairgrounds, John Brown, When The Ship Comes In, Who Killed Davey Moore?, Percy's Song, Bob Dylan's New Orleans Rag, Seven Curses

TEMPEST STORM

Theramin 334-1 [T-536]

Empire Burlesque outtakes

Tracklist: New Danville Girl, Tight Connection To My Heart, Clean Cut Kid, I'll Remember You, Seeing The Real You At Last, Something's Burning, Trust Yourself, Emotionally Yours, When The Night Comes Falling, Never Gonna Be The Same Again, Waiting To Get Beat, Straight A's In Love, The Very Thought Of You, Driftin' Too Far From Shore, Who Loves You More, Go 'Way Little Boy

DEEP: Presented in fine quality, an upgrade to the long-out-of-print Wanted Man release. Sound is a bit more true and with slightly less hiss. Housed in a color glossy slipcase. Nothing new here and some real stinkers sprinkled in among the bare-bones gems. It's interesting to hear the un-doctored mixes and alternate takes. A good one.

CDG: Well worth having, because you can hear what the songs sounded like before Arthur Baker got his hands on them.

NOTE: The original packaging for this set gave no date or venue information, and the original entry here was reconstructed from a previously posted report on the disc which included conspicuous errors (not the least of which was the reversal of discs 2 and 3 in the track listing). That entry proved only to be less conspicuously riddled with newly incorrect information. I appreciate the extensive assistance I have received in compiling a corrected entry

CDG: Intimate, powerful, and diverse. High quality recordings, excellent song selection.

rmd: Sound quality is unacceptably low (Masato Kato).
There's much to like here, though I'm grateful Bob didn't continue performing in this fashion for long. The Heartbreakers provide excellent backing, and it's nice to hear piano, absent for so long now, especially on the acoustic tracks. Dylan's vocals suffer a bit from that cotton-mouth duck sound heard on the Dead tour, and indeed some peculiar, unpleasant garbles occasionally escape his throat, but I enjoy several of his performances here. The diverse song selections makes for interesting listening, even when the performance falters. The sound quality varies, but much of it is excellent to me ears, and the worst of it is still listenable. The edits are rough between the songs, with no effort for continuity or grace.

DEEP: Very nice soundboard recording of a complete Dylan (23 tracks)/Petty (8 tracks) show. Not up to the soundboard standard of Marseilles '93, mind you, but very good nonetheless. I favor the acoustic and mid-tempo performances from this show; the rocking songs Bob speeds through as if a 33rpm played at 45. The excellent keyboard work by Benmont Tench is a highlight. Let me also add that I find Mike Campbell to be a very distinctive guitar player and one who "did right" by the songs with his playing. The bonus trax are from audience sources, with no duplication from the Shoreline show. Quality is decent, though by no means great. Well worth picking up. The packaging, to be blunt, sucks.

rmd: Sound quality is substandard. (Masato Kato).

LC Music 41-16817 [T-164]

Hammersmith Odeon (London, UK); February 9-17, 1991

Tracklist: Most Likely You Go Your Way, Lay Lady Lay, Masters Of War, The Man In Me (2/16); Wiggle Wiggle (2/12); Bob Dylan's Dream (2/16); Love Minus Zero (2/15); Tomorrow Is A Long Time (2/12); Shooting Star (2/9); Everything Is Broken (2/17); Man In The Long Black Coat, Seeing The Real You At Last, Under The Red Sky, God Knows (2/15); I Shall Be Released, Like A Rolling Stone (2/17); What Good Am I (2/12); Highway 61 Revisited (2/15)

CDG: Passable, but not great, recordings of quirky performance with some shining moments.

Heylin: A shambles, mismastered and randomly edited by the CD manufacturer.

NOTE: This disc apparently is taken from the same source tapes as the LP boot "Behind The Lines Of War," and has a very similar tracklist; the disc and LP were issued at about the same time. However, the reported dates for the LP tracks do not match the reported dates for the corresponding CD tracks.

EDLIS: EDLIS has recommended "Thin Wild Mercury Music" over "The Lonesome Sparrow Sings" for years now, but only by a whisker...

rmd: Though most of this material has circulated in various forms for years, it is very welcome to have all of these studio tracks collected on a single, well-engineered disc. The packaging is quite nice. The overall sound quality is very high. Some of the information on sources is inaccurate. (Dan Brazeale)
This is an excellent, well-packaged disc. It brings together some of the rarer material from 1965 and 1966, when Dylan was going for that "thin wild mercury sound." Several rarities are included. Sound quality for all of these tracks is as good as any I've ever heard and the selections are well thought out; however, the track order is more random than chronological order. (John Howells)

AMG: A very interesting compilation of Dylan's best rare/unreleased material from the mid-'60s. In most cases you can hear why these were rejected for his '65-66 albums; but there are very good, substantially different alternate takes here.

CDG: This 5 disc set has one version of every song (a total of 78) that were performed during the Hammersmith and Grand Rex Theatre residencies, including the complete concert from 2/8/90 at Hammersmith Odeon. Sound quality is uniformly excellent throughout as are the performances. I would recommend this one (which I normally avoid doing).

THROUGH A BULLET OF LIGHT

Golom 774554 [T-378]

Witmark Demos (New York, NY); 1962-1964

Long Ago Far Away, Long Time Gone, Ain't Gonna Grieve, Blowin' In The Wind, Farewell, Bob Dylan's Blues, Seven Curses, Paths Of Victory, All Over You, When The Ship Comes In, The Times They Are A-Changin', John Brown, Talkin' John Birch Paranoid Blues, I Shall Be Free, Hero Blues, Tomorrow Is A Long Time, Only A Hobo, Whatcha Gonna Do, Gypsy Lou, Baby Let Me Follow You Down, Hard Rain's A- Gonna Fall, Don't Think Twice, Oxford Town, Masters Of War, Walkin' Down The Line, The Death Of Emmett Till, Bob Dylan's Dream, Quit Your Lowdown Ways, Baby I'm In The Mood For You, Ballad Of Hollis Brown, Girl From The North Country, Boots Of Spanish Leather, Let Me Die In My Footsteps, Bound To Lose Bound To Win, I'd Hate To Be You On That Dreadful Day, Percy's Song, Guess I'm Doin' Fine, Eternal Circle, Mama You Been On My Mind, Mr. Tambourine Man, I'll Keep It With Mine (3:39)

EDLIS: The source is rumored to be Michael Krogsgaard's master tape of the acetates. Sound here is not quite so good as on "The Witmark Years," and the collection is not so complete.

ISIS: For 90% of the time, "Through A Bullet Of Light" wins on recording quality, but has one flawed track and omits the unreleased version of "Mama You Been On My Mind."

rmd: Interesting, but essential only to the hardcore fan. Most of the performances are tepid, most of the songs are better performed on the official albums and the unreleased songs are, with a few conspicuous exceptions, unremarkable.

(4) Madison Square Garden/The Theater (New York, NY); January 21, 1998

Tracklist: (1) Absolutely Sweet Marie, Not Dark Yet, Cold Irons Bound, Simple Twist Of Fate, Silvio, One Too Many Mornings, John Brown, Tangled Up In Blue, Million Miles, Just Like A Woman, Highway 61 Revisited, Like A Rolling Stone, My Back Pages, Love Sick, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 (2-4) Se¤or, Can't Wait, Tears Of Rage, Born In Time, Man In The Long Black Coat, Shelter From The Storm, Million Miles, Memphis Blues Again, Highway 61 Revisited

DEEP: The complete opening night show from the MSG stand. So much has been written about these shows that to belabor the point becomes tedious - Dylan and his band were outstanding and played the hell out of it every night. The TOOM tracks are swampy, chilling and delicious. Recording quality is just shy of excellent and the generous sampling of bonus trax are well chosen.

Several CDs recycling and reshuffling the same material, sometimes with slight variations, almost always with tracklist errors, have been issued.

CDG: A raw, live, performance in a small club, notable for its sloppy, screaming exuberance and wild supportive audience.

TONIGHT I'LL BE PLAYING HERE FOR YOU

Scorpio SCBO 005/006 [T-635]

Irving Plaza (New York, NY); December 8, 1997 (line)

Tracklist: Maggie's Farm, Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You, Cold Irons Bound, You're A Big Girl Now, Can't Wait, Silvio, Cocaine Blues, To Ramona, Tangled Up In Blue, White Dove, I And I, 'Til I Fell In Love With You, Highway 61 Revisited, Don't Think Twice, Love Sick, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35

DEEP: Suffice it to say that (IMO) this set is the benchmark for Dylan soundboards. Everything - mix, separation, balance, clarity, definition, fidelity - is stunning. The performance is top notch. The clarity of the acoustic instruments is startling and further illustrates the many subtleties and complexities inherent in "Cocaine Blues" and "Tangled Up In Blue." This one's a monster - don't you dare miss it!

THE TOTAL THING

Red Phantom 2CD [T-196]

This U2 disc includes four Dylan tracks: two taken from Dylan's April 20, 1987 walk-on Los Angeles appearance with U2 [I Shall Be Released, Knockin' On Heaven's Door]; two taken from Bono's walk-on appearance at Dylan's July 8, 1984 Slane Castle concert [Leopardskin Pillbox Hat, Blowin' In The Wind]. The principal content is the March 1, 1992 U2 concert in Miami, FL; and the filler tracks also include U2's covers of "Maggie's Farm" and "All Along The Watchtower."

DEEP: A fine collection of tracks from the August 1997 shows in consistently strong quality. Nicely selected for the strength of performance, it seems, as all provide thrills and chills. Very enjoyable set.

rmd: Overall good quality, with several standout performances; some of the sonic variations between different source recordings are distracting.

(12) Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, Seeing The Real You At Last, Across The Borderline

rmd: Not top notch quality, but still very enjoyable. The Melbourne tracks are awesome, and several of the others have been hard to find.

NOTE: According to ICE magazine, the sound quality on several of the recent segments, particularly the Letterman show, is lower than expected.

TWELVE CURSES

Early Years 02CD3337 [T-110]

Times They Are A-Changin' sessions

Tracklist: Only A Hobo, Moonshine Blues, Mam You Bin On My Mind, Eternal Circle, Percy's Song, Seven Curses, Lay Down Your Weary Tune, Percy's Song, Suze (The Cough Song), Eternal Circle, Walls Of Redwing

rmd: This bootleg is of very good quality. Only 3 of the cuts are not available legitimately at this time, so it is hard to recommend this disk. It includes an 8 page color booklet with pics of Dylan. (Anthony Kopolka)

12/- A POUND

Precisely 2CD [T-440]

(1) Congress Hall (Prague, Czech Rep.); March 11, 1995
(2) Congress Hall (Prague, Czech Rep.); March 12, 1995

Tracklist: (1) Down In The Flood, If Not For You, All Along The Watchtower, Just Like A Woman, Tangled Up In Blue, Watching The River Flow, Mr Tambourine Man, Boots Of Spanish Leather, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Man In The Long Black Coat, God Knows, Maggie's Farm, Shelter From The Storm, It Ain't Me Babe
(2) Down In The Flood, I Don't Believe You, Just Like A Woman, Tangled Up In Blue, Watching The River Flow, Desolation Row, Ballad Of A Thin Man

DEEP: Another slightly disappointing set. Not as upfront as one would like, but still listenable. The audience noise is very intrusive and detracts from a great performance. Actually, when the crowd shuts up it's not bad at all on the quieter trax. Bad idea to duplicate 4 of the trax from the next night. Bonus trax are excellent quality. Mildly recommended.

20 X 4

Audifon 1CD [T-578]

(12) Roving Gambler
(13) One Irish Rover, Simple Twist Of Fate

DEEP: Another fine compilation that easily takes the cake for most eclectic track listing. Sound quality is consistent throughout and ranges from excellent to very good, quite surprising considering the number of sources. There are 15 cover tunes, many of which Bob has played only a few times (if that many), and several originals that receive infrequent airings. The tracks are so eclectic and interesting; even the ones that don't work are at least interesting. High marks for this set and, to reiterate, sound quality is consistently good throughout. For those who are not familiar with BD live material circa 1989 and 1991, be forewarned. It is a far cry from the polish and sheen, so to speak, of BD live circa 1994 and 1995. The voice is rougher and the arrangements are not as tight. This does not detract from the attractiveness of the set, it is just to caution those who are intrigued by the track list.

TWENTY YEARS AGO AGAIN

Alternative (and erroneous) title sometimes applied to
"Montreal 1962 New York 1961," because that logo (for an entire line of pseudo-legitimate releases) is more prominent on the packaging than the actual title.
