(3) You're A Big Girl Now, Shelter From The Storm
DEEP: A terrific German show presented in squeaky clean and
crunchy quality, capturing a varied and energetic performance by
Dylan and band, with an interesting array of rarely played tunes
dotting the setlist (and well chosen filler, too).

WANTED MAN
Kiss The Stone 009 [T-214]
Lake Compounce (Bristol, CT); September 4, 1988 (line)
Tracklist: Subterranean Homesick Blues, I Don't Believe You, Just
Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Had A Dream About You
Baby, Simple Twist Of Fate, Highway 61 Revisited, To Ramona, Rank
Strangers To Me, Don't Think Twice, Knockin' On Heaven's Door,
Silvio, I Shall Be Released, Like A Rolling Stone, It Ain't Me
Babe, Masters Of War, Maggie's Farm
NOTE: Although this disc is usually reported as including
the complete concert, the final track has reportedly been edited to
fit the performance onto a single CD. The same concert, with
"To Ramona" omitted, circulates in higher quality on "Lake Compounce Festival
Park." Oddly, KTS used the unedited version of the tracks
as a spurious closing song for the October 19, 1988 concert on "Stuck Inside Of New
York."

DEEP: What a performance!! I can't recall a show where Bob's
phrasing was so varied and pronounced, so playful and yet so
biting. Everything meshed that night and it comes through loud and
clear on this nice Japanese set. From start to finish, an inspired
performance by all, particularly Mr. Dylan, who's singing was
sublime throughout!
CDG: Very nice recording with some excellent filler.

WAY UP ON THE AVENUE
CIB 04/05 2CD
Madison Square Garden/The Theater (New York, NY); January 16-21, 1998
This Van Morrison set includes both of the Dylan/Morrison duets from their New York City stand: "More And More" (January 18); and "Blue Suede Shoes" (January 21). These tracks are included on only one of the commonly circulating Dylan discs, "Madison Square Garden."
CDG [VM]: Average quality audience recordings, taken from multiple source tapes. A pretty good representation of an important series of concerts.

Stone
(2) Tombstone Blues (with backing vocal overdub)
rmd: This is a full concert, one week after Forest Hills,
the second post-Newport concert, in pristine sound quality--far
better obviously than the unlistenable Forest Hills tape, and also
substantially superior to the Berkeley 12-4-65 recording. The
acoustic performance here is par for the course, 1965, with a few
words by Dylan between a couple of the songs. It's vintage if not
truly transcendent acoustic Dylan '65 on the first disc. The second
half is of greater interest. The sound on these tracks is far less
raucous than Newport, less polished than Berkeley, and far more
prone to Dylan singing almost operatically. Very minimal backing
for most of the songs. To be honest, this is a pretty
plain-sounding band, and the riffs played are borderline cheesy,
especially from Kooper, on a couple of cuts. But it is not an
inferior performance, just different, a telling early stage in the
electrification of Bob Dylan. For that reason, well worth having...

rmd: Although over half the material is duplicated on the
official "Live 1966, a whole disk of the tension-filled
electric songs makes a compelling CD.
NOTE: This CD substantially overlaps the official release,
but includes tracks from three other shows. The non-Manchester
tracks match the tracks on "Play
Fucking Loud," but are reportedly in better sound
quality.

Tangled Up in Blue, Cocaine Blues, Watching The River Flow, Blind
Willie McTell, Highway 61 Revisited, Like A Rolling Stone, Forever
Young, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35
DEEP: Both shows in their entirety from the wonderful
WolfTrap gigs, taken from the hearing-impaired transmission. The
first show is an upgrade from the show offered on "Back At WolfTrap," with a
much more rounded and balanced sound. The second show takes another
step up in sound. The well balanced mix remains but the vocals are
a bit more upfront and prominent on this show, which was another
terrific performance. The acoustic tracks are amazing and every
single pluck and strum comes through with all the nuances and
subtle touches intact. Nice gatefold, glossy slipcase with cool
"block" graphics house the 3 disks. These are certainly
2 keepers from the summer of '97.

6, Maggie's Farm, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Like A Rolling Stone
DEEP: The Hollywood Bowl "board," Dylan's second
electric concert. A fascinating recording with both the acoustic
and (incomplete) electric sets in nowhere near top quality but
stunning nonetheless. Sensational black and white cover, classy
title graphics, plus rare back cover pictures and gig info, tracks,
personnel. Sharp looking! An incredible acoustic set by Dylan gives
way to a loose yet tentative electric performance, more of a
feeling out and "searching for the groove" type gig. This
one's a must. [NOTE: More complete versions of this
show now circulate on tape and CD.]

WHILE THE ESTABLISHMENT BURNS
Not actually a discrete release, but the fourth disc from "Genuine Live 1966" which circulates separately as a CDR copy. The disc includes the circulating acoustic tracks from the May 5, 1966 Dublin performance as well as several line recordings of electric songs from other 1966 European shows. It takes its title from an LP boot on which the Dublin tracks circulated commonly in the early 1970's.

DEEP: Alhough difficult to imagine, this release is a step
up in sound from "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With
You," seemingly remastered to provide a bit more boost and
fullness to the already remarkable sound. A devastating set,
beautifully packaged with a 12 page cover/booklet, also boasting
primo quality filler of the Hyde Park, London 1996 broadcast. An
essential listening experience.

(3) Friend Of The Devil, Mr. Tambourine Man, Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, Tombstone Blues, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Highway 61 Revisited, Forever Young
NOTE: The front cover slip for this set erroneously renders the title as "The Wicked Message."
DEEP: The first release from the wonderful Spring US shows
in no way disappoints. This is truly exceptional in the quality
department - crispy, crunchy sound, all upfront and in your face
with nary an intrusion from the crowd, which sounds way in the
back. This disk sizzles and is well worth having. The Hartford
show was among the best of the Spring, with a great setlist and an
energetic and focused performance. You want rarities, you got 'em.
Add to this the well chosen bonus tracks - so what's not to like?
23 different tracks in all and the quality is consistent throughout
the filler.
CDG: A fine release. Good quality recording and some nice
filler. Perhaps not the most outstanding show of the spring '97
tour, but certainly a good one.

trax are actually better. Not a thumbs down, but certainly not
essential.

E-Hal (Groningen, Netherlands); March 18, 1995
Tracklist: Down In The Flood, If You See Her Say Hello, All Along
The Watchtower, Just Like A Woman, Tangled Up In Blue, Mr.
Tambourine Man, Masters Of War, Jokerman, Love Minus Zero, Maggie's
Farm, Like A Rolling Stone
DEEP: Passed on this one. As Vol 1 remains the only '95 set
to reside in the "below average" category, this one
stayed in the bin. It was a 1CD set of 11 trax which, when combined
with 4 or so bonus trax from Vol 1, gives you the whole, uneventful
show from Groningen in so-so quality.

EDLIS: Classic mono studio recordings in acceptable quality
given the dates of recording. The sound here is at times marginally
brighter and clearer than the sound on the other Witmark CDs.
DEEP: I concur that "The Witmark Years" is the
best of the three packages. The sound is a bit brighter on this
one, not to mention a better package. The front cover of the CD
belongs in the bootleg cover Hall of Fame. Essential stuff, this
is.
ISIS: "The Witmark Years" while generally slightly
inferior on recording quality at least gets the track listing
right. For the most part, though, it fell below par, and on some
tracks was blatantly inferior.
rmd: "The Witmark Years" has the advantage of
arranging the material chronologically. Opinions on sound quality
tends to vary, even from track to track.

WOLFTRAP
Moonlight 9630 [T-061]
Wolf Trap (Vienna, VA); July 21, 1991 (line)
Tracklist: New Morning, I Don't Believe You, All Along The
Watchtower, Shelter From The Storm, Gotta Serve Somebody, Wiggle
Wiggle, I'll Remember You, It Takes A Lot To Laugh, Barbara Allen,
Mr Tambourine Man, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, It Ain't Me Babe,
Folsom Prison Blues
DEEP: The complete circulating tape in considerably better
quality than the previous Wolf Trap boards from 1993. The clear,
upfront vocals, excellent separation and well-balanced nature of
this recording makes it a real pleasure to listen to. Some
exceptional performances here but also a few which Dylan hurries
through like he's gotta catch a cab, not to mention the fact that
I cannot recall a show with so many of his infamous flubbed lines.
Still, IMO it adds to the charming nature of a show with some nice,
clear vocals and good and raunchy guitar playing. Very nice color
cover with tasty graphics. Very likable disk and highly
recommended.
rmd: Simplistic but brilliant soundboard-recording.
Great guitar-playing, almost like recent Lou Reed.
