Quality is very, very good to excellent throughout, nicely recorded with a clean, warm sound and packing a wallop also. The entire 21 May UCLA gig, plus well-selected bonus tracks. An excellent collection from top to bottom.

CENTER STAGE

Exclusive Series 007 [72:28] [T-620]

Frankenstadion (Nurenberg, Germany); May 31, 1998

Tracklist: To Be Alone With You, Lay Lady Lay, Tough Mama, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, Silvio, Friend Of The Devil, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Tangled Up In Blue, It Takes A Lot To Laugh, Highway 61 Revisited, Don't Think Twice, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35

DEEP: The complete "festival" set of a unique show - no TOOM tracks are performed, giving the show a much different vibe. There is a sound defect running intermittently throughout the recording, but it's not as intrusive as at first bite. Beyond that, crisp and clear with the brights bright and the bass booming. Not great but enjoyable; upbeat and flowing, with an old-timey, "feel good" sound. A rip roaring affair, loose as goose grease and as much fun as rolling in the mud with your buddies. Not for all tastes but a delightful pleasure for some, I'm sure.

CDG: Sound quality is quite good, despite some perceptible flaws. The music must be described as undistinguished -- Dylan turns in some fine vocal performances, but the overall feel of the gig is low-key and uninspired. It's all rather inconsistent; and there are better played, better recorded and better presented discs from the European Tour of '98.

CHARLIE'S CHOICE

RR101 [T-488]

(1) Marriott Hotel (Providence, RI); July 10, 1986
(2) SIR rehearsals (Los Angeles, CA); January 23, 1976

Tracklist: (1) You Win Again, I'm A King Bee, Let The Good Times Roll, Earth Angel
(2) One Too Many Mornings, Oh Sister, One More Cup Of Coffee, Sara, Just Like A Woman, Hurricane, Lay Lady Lay, Lay Lady Lay, Oh Sister, Mozambique, Isis, Positively Fourth Street

DEEP: Long available on tape and vinyl since 1986, the Marriott Lounge gig is presented here in exceptionally good soundboard quality. A very enjoyable 30 minute "mini blues- fest," with BD handling most of the lead vocals and playing guitar on all 4 trax. Some serious playing by Etta James' blues band of obviously seasoned veterans, too. A great chance to hear BD sing the blues and a fun 30 minutes. The Rolling Thunder rehearsals have been available before; these have apparently been cloned from "Days Before the Hurricane"; several songs have been omitted and the order has been changed. The quality here is very good; vocals could be a bit higher in the mix but the sound is all there. Interesting material, and not a bad choice for filler.

CHILD'S BALLOON

no label 2CD [T-610]

Saenger Performing Arts Center (New Orleans, LA); November 10, 1981 (line)

Tracklist: Gotta Serve Somebody, I Believe In You, Like A Rolling Stone, I Want You, Man Gave Names To All The Animals, Maggie's Farm, Girl From The North Country, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Heart Of Mine, Simple Twist Of Fate, All Along The Watchtower, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, Forever Young, Gamblin' Man, Times They Are A- Changin', Watered-Down Love, Shot Of Love, Masters Of War, Just Like A Woman, Thief On The Cross, Dead Man Dead Man, In TheGarden, Blowin' In The Wind, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), It Ain't Me Babe, Knockin' On Heaven's Door

DEEP: No need to hold onto "Stadiums of the Damned" now, as this set raises the "sound" bar considerably and renders it obsolete. The sound here is smooth and clean, upfront and not at all intrusive, stunning actually. Dylan's vocals are bright, the instruments are crisp and well defined. Dylan's performance is so confident and full of zest that you find yourself shaking your head. Each and every song is played with gusto and the guitars and keyboards provide a full throttle thrust to the proceedings. Dylan is playful, animated and cocksure in his delivery. High marks on this one.

THE CHILDREN'S CRUSADE

Not actually a discrete release, but the third disc from

(6) Simple Twist Of Fate, John Brown, Mama You Bin On My Mind

DEEP: The first 2 disks in this box set present the entire 23 July show in primo quality. The crispness and clarity of the sound, not to mention the balance and separation, are quite astonishing. Bob's vocals are captured perfectly and every instrument is clearly defined. This is a high quality performance to match, although it has raised no goosebumps. An interesting set list, a nice performance. The filler tracks are equally well chosen; good performances, great quality, nice track selection. No one should be disappointed with this first part of the set. The second night from Christiania is presented in the same drop dead quality as the first two disks. Another fine performance from all concerned, this one elevated to greater heights based on the last 4 songs of the show. Another interesting set list with only 3 duplications from the previous night. All told, the entire 4 disk set provides 38 songs with an amazing 35 different songs performed, quite an offering if you ask me. Filler from Munster is equally satisfying. Great quality once again. The big, bulky, fat 12" long box is ugly, worthless and unnecessary. You can't store it, it adds nothing of worth to the set. Other than that, it's a nice package with excellent color photos on the CD covers and inserts, a nice copy of a review from the Danish papers, and a short description of Christiania with some pictures of this strange place.

ISIS: Recording quality is outstanding, full upfront vocals and clear, well defined instrumentation. Over the two nights only three songs are duplicated. Dylan's performance is consistent throughout, and his vocal delivery is both confident and experimental. The mood is both relaxed and expectant, somehow both alive and serene. The filler tracks add bonus points, cxcellent renditions with clear crisp vocals. A superb representative collection of tracks from the '96 European tour, neatly packaged in a presentation box with understated cover graphics and foldout insert.

NOTE: Volume 4 in the not quite accurately named Pre-Columbian Bob Dylan fan project.

COLUMBIA RECORDED ARTIST

(2) Red Rocks ((Morrison, CO); July 26, 1986
(3) Rich Stadium (Buffalo, NY); July 4, 1986 (line)

Tracklist: (1) Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, Gotta Serve Somebody, Seeing The Real You At Last, Across The Borderline, Like A Rolling Stone, In The Garden, Blowin' In The Wind, Uranium Rock, Knockin' On Heaven's Door
(2) I And I
(3) Emotionally Yours, We Had It All, To Ramona, One Too Many Mornings, A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know, Lonesome Town

DEEP: Incomplete soundboard recordings from 2 sources in very good quality. Can't figure out the point of this compilation, really. Not a bad sampler if you want a single disk from '86, but other sets have presented a more representative sampling of the tour.

CDG: Good quality, but nothing very special.

(16) Cheer Down

CDG: A mixed bag. More than one-third of the tracks are non-Wilbury material, and much of the information in the packaging is incorrect. Only the rough mix of Traveling Wilburys Volume 3 is interesting -- too little, too late to justify this project.

NOTE: Not recommended. Many of the tracks here are pirated from official releases; many of the tracks have no connection to the Wilburys as a group. Many tracks are incorrectly identified, and the packaging is riddled with misinformation.

COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF BOB DYLAN

MasterTone 8306 [T-575]

NOTE: This collection of interview excerpts was packaged together with the jewel-case sized book of the same title, written by Patrick Humphries and published by Omnibus Books. The book/CD package was reportedly sold only in the United States; the book alone has been available in other markets, and the book alone was still in print in the United States as of January 1, 2000.

COMPLETE LAST WALTZ

Cool Daddy 01/02/03/04 [T-479]

Winterland (San Francisco, CA); November 25, 1976 (line)

Tracklist: Up on Cripple Creek, The Shape I'm In, It Makes No Difference, Life Is A Carnival, This Wheel's On Fire, W.S. Walcott Medicine Show, Georgia On My Mind, Ophelia, King Harvest, Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Stage Fright, Rag Mama Rag; Who Do You Love (Ronnie Hawkins); Such A Night (Dr John); Down South In New Orleans (Dr. John/Bobby Charles); Mystery Train (Paul Butterfield); Caledonia, Mannish Boy (Muddy Waters); All Our Past Times (w/Eric Clapton); Further On Up The Road (Eric Clapton); Helpless, Four Strong Winds (Neil Young); Coyote, Shadows And Light, Furry Sings The Blues (Joni Mitchell); Dry Your Eyes (Neil Diamond); Tura Lura Lura, Caravan (Van Morrison); Acadian Driftwood (w/Neil Young/Joni Mitchell), Chest Fever, Evangeline, The Weight; Baby Let Me Follow You Down, Hazel, I Don't Believe You, Forever Young, Baby Let Me Follow You Down ; I Shall Be Released (w/Dylan & ensemble); Instrumental Jam 1, Instrumental Jam 2 (w/ensemble); Don't Do It

NOTE: This set presents the entire program in its original order, without overdubbing or other modification. It includes 17 tracks not found on the official release: This Wheel's On Fire, W.S. Walcott Medicine Show, Georgia On My Mind, King Harvest, Rag Mama Rag, Caledonia, All Our Past Times, Four Strong Winds, Shadows And Light, Furry Sings The Blues, Acadian Driftwood, Chest Fever, Hazel, I Shall Be Released, Instrumental Jam 1, Instrumental Jam 2; Don't Do It.

LIVE! Music: Sequenced exactly as the concert was played, in packaging as exquisite as the original event. The recording is solid, an unmixed soundboard; even the released tracks have a slightly different flavor to them. A pricey affair with a large dose of worthwhile unreleased material.

THE COMPLETE SUPPER CLUB

Rocks 92115-118 [T-326]

(1) Supper Club (New York, NY); November 16, 1993 (first show)
(2) Supper Club (New York, NY); November 16, 1993 (second show)
(3) Supper Club (New York, NY); November 17, 1993 (first show)
(4) Supper Club (New York, NY); November 17, 1993 (second show)

Tracklist: (1) Absolutely Sweet Marie, Lay Lady Lay, Blood In My Eyes, Queen Jane Approximately, Tight Connection To My Heart, Disease Of Conceit, I Want You, Ring Them Bells, My Back Pages, Forever Young
(2) Ragged And Dirty, Lay Lady Lay, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, Queen Jane Approximately, Jack-A-Roe, One Too Many Mornings, I Want You, Ring Them Bells, My Back Pages, Forever Young
(3) Ragged And Dirty, One More Cup Of Coffee, Blood In My Eyes, Queen Jane Approximately, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, Disease Of Conceit, I Want You, Ring Them Bells, My Back Pages, Forever Young
(4) Ragged And Dirty, Lay Lady Lay, Tight Connection To My Heart, Weeping Willow, Delia, Jim Jones, Queen Jane Approximately, Ring Them Bells, Jack-A-Roe, Forever Young, I Shall Be Released

EDLIS: Probably the best choice for those interested in the Supper Club concerts. The quality and source tapes are the same as the available CDs of the first two shows, but the packaging here is a wee bit better.

rmd: Definitely worth getting. It's an audience recording, and since the Supper Club is a small place and the audience were (understandably) very excited, the sound quality is not all we have come to expect of recent CD boots, but it's quite listenable with a little knob twisting. The first disc has the noisiest crowd, while the second has the foggiest sound. Disc three has the best sound, and disc four has the best songlist. Performances are very strong throughout. (Matthew Zuckerman)

COMPLETELY UNPLUGGED

Moontunes 006/007 [T-460]

(1) MTV Unplugged (New York, NY); November 17, 1994
(2) MTV Unplugged (New York, NY); November 18, 1994

(1) Tombstone Blues, I Want You, Don't Think Twice, Desolation Row, Hazel, Everything Is Broken, The Times They Are A-Changin, Love Minus Zero/No Limit, Dignity, With God On Our Side
(2) Absolutely Sweet Marie, Shooting Star, All Along The Watchtower, My Back Pages, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, John Brown, The Times They Are A-Changin', Dignity, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Like A Rolling Stone, Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You, Desolation Row, I Want You

DEEP: The title says it all. You get the shows as they happened - complete, unedited, rough mix soundboard recordings. The quality is superb and perfectly balanced, and continuous so you get all the between-song riffing, talk, etc. Unissued tracks reach heights of perfection. Needless to say, Dylan and band deliver impassioned, emotional, and oft times raucous sets which highlight the feeling in Dylan's vocals and the instrumental strengths of the band. To hear the shows as they happened is a real treat.

Tracklist: (1) Solid Rock, Saving Grace, Saved, What Can I Do For You, In The Garden, Blessed Be The Name, Pressing On
(2) In The Garden
(3) Trouble In Mind (6-verse version)

rmd: An extraordinary performance. The music of rebirth. The passion and joy here makes Saved sound all the more empty and limp. This show might win you over if you don't yet appreciate Bob's gospel. The sound quality of this audience recording, sadly, is merely very good.

(2) I Don't Believe You, Hurricane, Oh Sister, One More Cup Of Coffee, Sara, Just Like A Woman, This Land Is Your Land
(3) Simple Twist Of Fate, Oh Sister
(4) It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Love Minus Zero

DEEP: Along with the fabulous "Knight Of The Hurricane," this is the definitive collection of Rolling Thunder '75. The performances are outrageously good - the Boston is in much better sound that the old Great Dane set (and not cut up, either). To include the complete circulating Plymouth soundboard (7 tracks) was a masterstroke. Two transcendant Toronto tracks not included elsewhere on the set are just icing on an already tasty cake. Essential stuff in terrific quality. The wonderful, original artwork is welcome; the colorful background scheme has a nice Rolling Thunder feel to it. More than essential.

(2) Greek Theater (Hollywood, CA); August 4, 1988

(5) Greek Theater (Hollywood, CA); August 2, 1988
(6) Greek Theater (Hollywood, CA); August 3, 1988

Tracklist: (1) She Belongs To Me
(2) Hallelujah, Driftin' Too Far From Shore, I'll Be Around
(3) Don't Think Twice, Knockin' On Heaven's Door
(4) Leopard-Skin Pill Box Hat, Shelter From The Storm, Big River, We Three
(5) Trail Of The Buffalo
(6) I'm In The Mood For Love
(7) Visions Of Johanna

DEEP: An eclectic selection of "rare" tracks; once again, Wanted Man has chosen to provide incomplete info. Quality of the 12 tracks is pretty consistent throughout and for the most part is very good. Some vintage performances are included here. I'd give this disk high marks for creativity and track selection but low marks for lack of info and the fact that 15 more minutes are available. Recommended, but . . . .

CRITICS CHOICE VOL 8

Wanted Man 070 [T-020]

(1) Orange County Fair (Middletown, NY); September 3, 1988

(8) National Exhibition Center (Birmingham, UK); June 7, 1989
(9) Webley Arena (London, UK); June 8, 1989

Tracklist: (1) I Don't Believe You
(2) Subterranean Homesick Blues, Rank Strangers To Me
(3) Bob Dylan's 115th Dream, With God On Our Side, Waggoner's Lad
(4) Hey La La
(5) Confidential To Me
(6) Congratulations
(7) Ballad Of Hollis Brown
(8) Lonesome Town
(9) In The Garden

NOTE: Tentative track attributions made by assuming that this CD is organized along the same lines as "Critics Choice Vols 3-4." The June dates are problematic, and the tracks cannot be in chronological order.

DEEP: 12 tracks presented in acceptable and occasionally very good quality, including a few choice rarities. The disk clocks in at only 55 minutes, a continuing problem for too many Wanted Man disks. Mediocre - a mild recommendation.
