DALLAS, TEXAS
Watchtower 003/4 [T-530]
(Dallas, TX); October 25, 1996
Tracklist: Down In The Flood, If You See Her Say Hello, All Along
The Watchtower, Shelter From The Storm, Tombstone Blues, Silvio,
Tangled Up In Blue, Boots of Spanish Leather, It's All Over Now
Baby Blue, God Knows, Joey, Highway 61 Revisited, Alabama Getaway,
Forever Young, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35
DEEP: A fine recording, with just the right balance and
range and separation. Dylan's vocals are clear and upfront and ride
nicely above the music, as they should. He sounds particularly
inspired and energetic in his vocal delivery. A jewel of an
acoustic set. Overall, a nice effort quality-wise that would have
been enormously improved with the addition of bonus track material.
Generic cover design.
CDG: Very nice quality. Dylan's vocals are clear and the
band sounds crispy. No real surprises in the setlist.

(1) Stadthalle (Cottbus, Germany); July 14, 1996
(2) Stadthalle (Magdeburg, Germany); July 12, 1996
Tracklist: (1) To Be Alone With You, I Want You, All Along The
Watchtower, Just Like A Woman, Pledging My Time, Silvio, Boots Of
Spanish Leather, John Brown, Mr. Tambourine Man, Jokerman, I
Believe In You, Memphis Blues Again, Blowin' In The Wind, Rainy Day
Woman 12 & 35
(2) Lay Lady Lay, Positively 4th Street, It Takes A Lot To Laugh,
Gates Of Eden, Like A Rolling Stone
DEEP: The Cottbus portion of this set is presented in
excellent quality - upfront and punchy, with vocals and
instrumentation crisp and clear and all nuances intact. Bob and the
gang deliver a performance to match here, loud and strong and
energetic and passionate. From the opening roll, Dylan's vocals are
on the mark and the band rolls right along with him. A nice
selection of filler (albeit in lesser quality but still pleasing)
completes a very worthwhile disk. Two things about the packaging
these are the best looking disks of all time with full color repros
of the Cottbus and Magdeburg tickets on each. Very cool. The front
insert folds out into a full color poster - a nice touch.

DANCING IN THE DARK
Moonlight 9632/33 [T-062]
(1) November 1987 rehearsals
(2) Massey Hall (Toronto, ON); April 19-20, 1980 (line)
Tracklist: (1) Dancing In The Dark, Six Days On The Road, Carrying
My Cross, Suzy Q, You're A Big Girl, All I Really Want To Do,
Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat, Dead Man Dead Man, Everybody's Movin',
Easy, Trail Of The Buffalo, Heart Of Mine, Joey, I'll Be Your Baby
Tonight, Folsom Prison Blues, Shelter From The Storm
(2) Gotta Serve Somebody, Covenant Woman, When You Gonna Wake Up,
Precious Angel, Slow Train Coming, Solid Rock
DEEP A motley crew of tracks recorded at an unknown
rehearsal in '87 with an unidentified band. The quality is
excellent w/great separation, full sound and Dylan's vocals loud
and clear. The tracks are more fully realized/less fragmented than
those from the 1989 rehearsals; these tracks play more like
outtakess than rough rehearsals. There are only 3 instrumentals.
Lyrical differences abound. The band infuses all the tracks with a
bluesy, rockin' sound - they are no slouches and you can feel Dylan
being driven by them. A fine sounding band, nice
"performances" all around. The bonus trax (which are not
the best quality) seem out of place but it's better than nothing.
Packaging is better than average, with nice color photos
throughout. Highly recommended.
rmd: The performances are rough, with the anonymous band
lost at times, unsure of Dylan's intentions. Still, the music is
far more enjoyable than the 1987 rehearsals with the Dead. The
sound quality is very good throughout. The choice of filler tracks
is odd.

Rock Calendar 2109 [T-306]
Warehouse (New Orleans, LA); May 3, 1976
Tracklist: Memphis Blues Again, You're A Big Girl Now, Rita May,

TO BE AVOIDED: Taken from vinyl rather from source tapes,
and incomplete. To add insult to low quality, whoever transferred
the original LP to CD put side 2 before side 1. The CD packaging also inaccurately places the concert in New York City.

Young
(2) Repossession Blues, One Of Us Must Know, Girl From the North
Country
(3) We Better Talk This Over, Coming From The Heart, Simple Twist
Of Fate, If You See Her Say Hello, I Don't Believe You
DEEP: This CD presents the complete circulating studio
rehearsals from 1978 in improved (outstanding) quality but these
play out more like studio outtakes. They are not rough runthroughs
but fully realized, polished versions with (in several cases)
radically reworked lyrics. For my money, these performances are
exceptional and superior to the performances on Budokan. Dylan's
vocals are exceptionally sharp and the arrangements are very
enjoyable. A very enjoyable and unique set with several rare trax
and even rarer arrangements. I can't say enough about how enjoyable
this material is. Very interesting arrangements, all with either a
real blues or jazz feel to them.
CDG: A very fine disc with excellent versions of several
scarcer songs.

DEEP: Both the afternoon and evening shows on 2 disks in
(somewhat) listenable quality but by no means good. The quieter
songs sound better than the electric numbers. Beautiful color,
glossy slipcase with a great design and cover picture. For 1974
completists only, IMO.

Silvio, Tombstone Blues, Mr Tambourine Man, Gates Of Eden, Don't
Think Twice, Seeing The Real You At Last, Ballad Of A Thin Man, It

DEEP: Another misstep from oft-times lame label DIYE which
attempts to merge two nights into one show. Someone forgot to tell
them, though, that you can't fit one Dylan show onto 1CD and if you
are going to do a compilation it is best to include songs that are
somewhat unique, not the ones played at every show. Take a pass,
it's simply average, though not a total waste of time.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

Wind, Maggie's Farm, One Too Many Mornings, Seven Days, Just Like
Tom Thumb's Blues, It Takes A Lot To Laugh, You Angel You
(2) Just Like A Woman, Tangled Up In Blue
(3) The Sun Is Shining
(4) Seven Days
DEEP: A voyeuristic look at the "loose as goose
grease" atmosphere of a Rolling Thunder rehearsal. Nice
quality with the vocals clear, albeit just a bit in the background,
and the music hitting a real groove on some interestingly arranged
versions of Dylan tunes. Of particular note is the totally re
written and crazed version of "Tangled Up In Blue." Most
tunes performed whole, with some fits and starts, and the groove
never drags. This one's a straight re-issue of the original Scorpio
on Wild Wolf but with a great new front and back cover and,
obviously, in the best circulating quality. Highly recommended.
CDG: Slow rehearsals; hard-to-penetrate but interesting.
rmd: Most of the rehearsal stuff is sloppy, loose and unfinished . It's like picking up a canvas on which an artist was drawing sketches. There is decent stuff here, but also material we could live without. Good for academic/hardcore fans, but not high on the list.
NOTE: This disc appears to circulate under several
different labels/matrix numbers.

DEEDS OF MERCY
Razor's Edge 002 [T-317]
Studio On The Move (New Orleans, LA); March 7-24, 1989
Tracklist: Shooting Star, God Knows, God Knows, What Good Am I?,
Most of The Time, Everything Is Broken, Political World, Born In
Time, Dignity, Shooting Star, Disease Of Conceit, Ring Them Bells,
Most Of The Time, What Was It You Wanted?, Series Of Dreams
rmd: "Deeds Of Mercy" definitely came out on top
for me. "Ring Them Bells"
definitely sounds to have gone through the digital mill to take out
the hiss and brighten the sound, but the true presence of the music
has been forfeited to a degree. It's not at all bad, but I'd advise
any analog fan to stick with "Deeds." (Matthew
Zuckerman)
Although "Bells" has better sound than "Deeds",
the different track listings make it difficult to say categorically
that either disc is dispensible. (Ben Taylor)

DEEP: Much improved sound over previous versions of this
material, now taken directly from a tape source rather than vinyl.
Recommended.
rmd: The sound quality is pretty good by 1980 standards, but
nothing special. There are now at least a half dozen essentially
identical CDs from this source tape. (Matthew Zuckerman)

DEEP: Very eclectic and high quality compilation which could
have been a lot better. 18 high quality tracks from various
sources. One main drawback: disk clocks in at just under 60
minutes. I'm not much for compilations, but this one is better than
most. A very enjoyable disk to listen to, the quality is
outstanding overall.
EDLIS: Various rare tracks, mostly widely available on other

different photo of Bob on the front, but minimal additional
packaging. While inexpensive, each disc is not really all that
full- all of these songs could have been put on just two CDs (and

better quality. (Anthony Kopolka)

DOING COVERS AGAIN
unidentified label 1D
Tracklist: Girl On The Green Briar Shore (probably 6/30/92, Dunkirk); Precious Angel, Saving Grace (11/6/79, San Francisco); Caribbean Wind (11/12/80, San Francisco); Ain't Gonna Go To Hell (11/17/80, San Francisco); Jim Jones, Tomorrow Night (4/23/93, New Orleans); You're Gonna Quit Me (10/9/93, New Orleans); Black Jack Davey (2/7/93, London); Shake Sugaree (8/3/96, Atlanta); Friend Of The Devil (4/17/97, Providence); Alabama Getaway (8/23/97, Wolf Trap); New New Minglewood Blues (6/24/96, Differdange)
NOTE: To be avoided. This appears to be a haphazardly compiled, homebrewed collection of tracks taken from commercial CD boots; the direct source may not be the original discs, but an analog tape compilation. An earlier fan project with the same title is also reported; whether the two items are distinct is unknown. Much of the reported information is inaccurate -- most conspicuously, the identification of four Dylan originals (apparently taken from "Acetates On The Tracks 3") as covers. The 1993 ascriptions are questionable; the Guide listing infers that the tracks are taken from "Lucky 13."

DON'T BE LATE
Zipperman 001 2CDR
El Rey Theater (Los Angeles, CA); December 19, 1997
Tracklist: Maggie's Farm, Man In The Long Black Coat, Cold Irons
Bound, Just Like A Woman, Can't Wait, Silvio, Babe It Ain't No
Lie, Love Minus Zero, Tangled Up In Blue, When I Paint My
Masterpiece, Joey, 'Til I Fell In Love With You, Highway 61

#12 & 35
rmd: The quality of this boot is outstanding. I've never
heard a better sounding 1997 concert. The packaging is equally
impressive. The cover is a swipe of the Newsweek cover and inside
is a nice pic from Bob's visit with the Pope. I highly recommend
this show.

Blue, God Knows, Man In The Long Black Coat, I'll Remember You,
Maggie's Farm, What Good Am I?, It Ain't Me Babe
(2) Under The Red Sky, Mama You Been On My Mind
NOTE: The track listed as "It Ain't Me Babe" was
reported as "Don't Think Twice," which was not performed
at either Chicago concert; "It Ain't Me Babe "
immediately followed "What Good Am I" on April 17.
rmd: What sets this disk apart is the choice of tracks,
which avoids many of the warhorses heard at most 1994 concerts.
The vocal phrasing is completely playful, poignant, and thrilling.
Sound quality of these audience recordings is very good, (but far
short of outstanding), in satisfactory fidelity and clarity.

DOWN IN THE BASEMENT
Moonlight 9642 [T-070]
Basement Tapes (West Saugerties, NY); 1967
Tracklist: I Got You Babe, Memphis Tennessee, Instrumental, Gonna
Get You Now, Instrumental, Mighty Quinn, Lo And Behold, Apple
Suckling Tree, Tiny Montgomery, I Shall Be Released, Instrumentals,
Sonny Boy, Piano Rag instrumental, Be My Baby
DEEP: Tiny Tim at Big Pink? What a hoot. Comical renditions
by the Tim Man that only a dog could appreciate, though in
excellent quality. The instrumentals are interesting to hear,
though very short, and you won't be hyperbolizing about any of them
down the road. Dylan's vocal contributions (6) have all been heard
in better quality on the "Genuine
Basement Tapes." Much hiss to sift through here. The only
redeeming features are the nice looking front and back covers. Pass
on this one, folks, it's a loser.
CDG: The Basement Tapes revisited, no new material here as
far as I can tell. Maybe interesting if you haven't got any
Basement stuff yet, otherwise let this pass...

DOWN IN THE FLOOD
Archivio ARC 005 [T-146]

Tracklist: Jokerman, License To Kill, Man Of Peace, Neighborhood
Bully, Don't Fall Apart On Me Tonight, Blind Willie McTell,
Sweetheart Like You, I And I, Foot Of Pride
rmd: These are Infidels outtakes, but the selection
is somewhat puzzling. Many are almost identical to the official
versions; other outakes are inexplicably missing. The packaging is
black and white, and somewhat minimal even if smart looking. The
sound quality is good, but worse then I would expect from studio
outtakes. I can't recommend this disc, except to completists.

NOTE: Replicates a vinyl boot of the same name.

DOWN IN THE FLOOD
Money Maker Records MR-007 [76:57] [T-468]

Tracklist: Down In The Flood, Se¤or, All Along The Watchtower, Just
Like A Woman, Tangled Up In Blue, Mr. Tambourine Man, Masters Of
War, Boots Of Spanish Leather, Memphis Blues Again, I Shall Be
Released, Highway 61 Revisited, Like A Rolling Stone
DEEP: Unusual to get almost an entire show on 1 CD, but this
CD omits only one song. This was one of several March shows
abbreviated for health reasons. The set list is fairly standard
with a couple of surprises. Quality is very, very good; vocals are
clear, upfront and detailed, and the music is crisp and alive.
Despite the congestion, Dylan gives a fine performance. Not a great
show, but one where the band really shines, all the subtle nuances
are intact. Dylan's vocals sound a bit different - you can tell he
realizes his voice is affected - and it seems as if he's totally
aware of this while he's singing. It makes for an interesting
performance and adds to the proceedings. Nice package, too, with a
cartoon cover of crows and a funny caricature of BD on the rear
cover and on color picture CD. Recommended.

35, Blowin' In The Wind, 'Til I Fell In Love With You, Silvio, I
Shall Be Released
DEEP: Another in the seemingly endless series of "special"
club gigs where Bob strays from the norm and pulls out some rarely
played tunes to zealous throngs of a thousand or less. The
Melbourne club show covers a wide array of eclectic tunes in an
upbeat and energetic performance. Rare and more usual songs are
performed with an inspired gusto that leaves the club quaking from
the reactions. An exciting change of pace from the "standard fare"
setlists. The quality is quite good, although not a standout.
Nonetheless, a wonderful document of a now-legendary performance,
complete with snazzy 8 page booklet and essay.

DEEP: It's become noticeable that anytime Bob decides to
perform "Visions Of Johanna," chances are the entirety of
the show will be a stunner. That's the case here, once again, and
he pulls out some other rarities to boot (no pun intended). Sound
quality is very good, upfront and crisp with a nice mix of top and
bottom. The set is filled out with well selected and rarely played
filler from early '99, with the Setzer Orchesra horn-backed tracks
particularly choice.
EDLIS: The sound here is better than on the circulating fan
projects taken from the same show.

DEEP: 17 track show in very, very good quality (perhaps a
slight bit hollow sounding and outdoorsy) but with vocals clear and
true and music all "right there." Unique track list with
another great acoustic set. Overall, a very fine show, with Van
Morrison and Carole King dropping in. Nice sounding filler from
previous Irish shows. A hearty recommendation for this one.

DEEP: Dylan's performance is lame, tired, boring and full of
as much enthusiasm as a post-lobotomy victim. He doesn't sound good
and the Dead are no better. The sound quality, for a soundboard
source, is just pretty good. I'm not a Dead-hater, either, this
show just turns me off. The best thing I can say about the quality
of the performance on this CD is that it has a great color cover.

THE DYLAN'S ROOTS
Skeleton 1001 [T-101]
(1) East Orange Tape (East Orange, NJ); February 1961
(2) Carnegie Chapter Hall (New York, NY); November 4, 1961
(line)
Tracklist: (1) San Francisco Bay Blues, Jesus Met The Woman At The
Well, Gypsy Davey, Pastures Of Plenty, Trail Of The Buffalo, Jesse
James, Car Car, Southern Cannonball, Bring Me Back My Blue-Eyed
Boy, Remember Me
(2) Pretty Peggy-O, In The Pines, Gospel Plow, 1913 Massacre,
Backwater Blues, Young But Daily Growing, Fixin To Die
rmd: A nicely organized CD with two complete recordings of
'61 Dylan tapes. The sound is very good overall, better on the East
Orange cuts then the New York cuts. This CD contains a booklet with
a description of the circumstances of these recordings in German,
French, Italian, and English. Despite peculiar wording, the
information is gotten across, and the packaging is not skimpy.

DYLAN/CASH SESSIONS
Spank SP 106 [T-351]
(1) Columbia Records Studio (Nashville, TN); February 17-18,
1969
(2) Johnny Cash Show (Nashville, TN); May 1, 1969
(3) Nashville Skyline quadrophonic mixes
Tracklist: (1) One Too Many Mornings, Good Ol' Mountain Dew, I
Still Miss Someone, Careless Love, Matchbox, That's All Right Mama,
Big River, Girl From The North Country, I Walk The Line, You Are My
Sunshine, Ring Of Fire, Guess Things Happen That Way, Just A Closer
Walk With Thee, Blue Yodel #4, Blue Yodel #5
(2) I Threw It All Away, Living The Blues, Girl From The North Country (w/Johnny Cash)
(3) Nashville Skyline Rag, I Threw It All Away, Peggy Day, Country
Pie, Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You
NOTE: This CD has apparently been issued in at three distinct forms, under the same label/number, in packaging with noticeable differences only in the track listing. Aside from the version listed here, one variant exists which omits the quad mixes; a second variant includes the quad mixes but omits the Cash show performances.
CDG: Outtakes from Nashville Skyline period; loose,
easy harmonies with Johnny Cash. Good for long car trips or
background music at home or office.
rmd: This boot acts as a time gauge of where and what Bob and Johnny were doing in 1969. As mentioned in other reviews, its beauty lies in its simplicity.
rmd: The camaraderie of this session and the good humored atmosphere are rarely equalled anywhere. It doesn't sound like two of the greatest poets and voices of the 20th century on this CD; it sounds like a couple of midly drunken factory workers after a particularly long shift, staring into the face of a weekend with razor stubble, a bottle of whiskey, and a dollar or two. And that's why it's good.
AMG: Judged as a proper studio album, the Performances are
simply too ragged and tentative. Judged as a loose, informal
meeting of two giants, it's very pleasurable listening, in perfect
fidelity.
NOTE: The tracks commonly identified as "quad
mixes" are apparently encoded so as to play in surround sound
on an appropriate device.

DYNAMIC LIVE
Apple House [T-436]
(1) Sullivan Stadium (Foxboro, MA); July 4, 1987
(2) Philharmonic Hall (New York, NY); October 31, 1964
Tracklist: (1) Times They Are A-Changin', Man Of Peace, I'll Be
Your Baby Tonight. John Brown, I Want You, Ballad Of A Thin Man,
Memphis Blues Again, Queen Jane Approximately, Chimes Of Freedom,
Joey, Knockin' On Heaven's Door
(2) With God On Our Side, It Ain't Me Babe (w/Joan Baez)
NOTE: To be avoided. An incomplete version of a concert
circulating in complete form on Bob Dylan
With The Grateful Dead, A Dream Came
True, Foxboro, Knockin' On Foxboro's Door, and Orbiting Uvula. The CD packaging
implausibly identifies the Dylan/Baez filler tracks as coming from
their August 8, 1964 Forest Hills performance.
