EL GRANDE DEL ROCK AMERICANO

no label 1CD [T-474]

This compilation of tracks by various performers was released as a premium for an issue of the Italian magazine "Class" in 1995. It includes 4 Dylan performances: three very common songs from the Halloween 1964 concert; and a performance of "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" attributed to the May 9, 1965 London concert [but more likely coming from the Manchester Free Trade Hall concert two days earlier.]

EL REY THEATER: THE FIRST NIGHT

Head 2D

(1) El Rey Theater (Los Angeles, CA); December 16, 1997
(2) El Rey Theater (Los Angeles, CA); December 18, 1997

Tracklist: (1) Maggie's Farm, Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You, Cold Irons Bound, You Ain't Goin' Nowhere, Can't Wait, Silvio, Cocaine Blues, Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, Tangled Up In Blue, Memphis Blues Again, This Wheel's On Fire, 'Til I Fell In Love With You, Highway 61 Revisited, Forever Young, Love Sick, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35
(2) I Want You, Born In Time, Stone Walls And Steel Bars, Blind Willie McTell, Like A Rolling Stone, It Ain't Me Babe

rmd: Avoid at all costs. A filthy audience recording.

rmd: Pretty neat. Although the sound is slightly harsh, it is no worse than some other El Rey CDs. Nice package, with pictures from Dylan's "Drawn Blank."

ELECTRIC BLACK NIGHT CRASH

Junkyard Angel 001 [T-600]

Hollywood Bowl (Los Angeles, CA); September 3, 1965 (line)

Tracklist: She Belongs To Me, To Ramona, Gates Of Eden, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Desolation Row, Love Minus Zero, Mr. Tambourine Man, I Don't Believe You, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, From A Buick 6, Maggie's Farm, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Like A Rolling Stone

DEEP: The first glass-mastered release from the recently surfaced Hollywood Bowl tape. If I may, the cover, a 1965 color close-up of Dylan's head in front of a microphone, is absolutely stunning. Quality is very good, same quality as the initial CDR release "Western Electric." The show provides a revealing look at Dylan at the height of his unique powers during the acoustic set, which is compelling and IMO a more inspired performance than the '65 UK shows or even the '64 acoustic sets, for that matter. The electric set is a different story. You can sense the tentative, apprehensive nature of the performance, with the reins pulled back a bit and the confident, headlong burst into the fire that would characterize the '66 shows not yet in evidence. In any case, this one's a must, a major link in understanding the chain. Nice package with the previously mentioned cover and artwork all around.

THE EMMETT GROGAN ACETATES

Capricorn 2055 [T-482]

(1) Columbia Records Studio A (New York, NY); June 9, 1964
(2) Columbia Records Studio A (New York, NY); August - October 1963
(3) Newport Folk Festival (Newport, RI); July 26, 1964 (line)

Tracklist: (1) I Don't Believe You, Chimes of Freedom, Motorpsycho Nitemare, Mr. Tambourine Man, All I Really I Want To Do, Black Crow Blues, I Shall Be Free #10
(2) California, Denise, Bob Dylan's New Orleans Rag, East Laredo Blues, That's All Right Mama/Sally Free And Easy, Bob Dylan's New Orleans Rag, Hero Blues
(3) All I Really Want To Do

DEEP: Seven tracks from the Emmett Grogan acetates in superb stereo so clean there's little hint that acetates are the source. Bonus tracks also in excellent quality, to my knowledge best quality available. The Another Side acetates are sure to cause a stir. While these trax are the same as appear on the official album, in a couple of cases you hear the producer asking Dylan if he's ready and perhaps a count-in. All, that is, except "Mr Tambourine Man." This version is completely different, vocally and instrumentally, than the one recorded 6 months later and released on Bringing It All Back Home. This is a major find. Unlike the upbeat, optimistic, jaunty official version, this one is much slower, more sparse, sung like BD has the "worried blues," concerned that his muse may not return. A totally different song, different phrasing, added lines, a mistaken line, different ending. And who is that singing the choruses with Bob? [Jack Elliott] This version runs well over a minute longer than the released version, and ends without a guitar/harp solo. This one tune is more than worth the price of admission.

THE EMMETT GROGAN ACETATES AND OTHER RARITIES

Gunsmoke GSR 3 [T-079]

(1) Columbia Records Studio A (New York, NY); June 9, 1964
(2) Newport Folk Festival (Newport, RI); July 26, 1964
(3) City Hall (Newcastle, UK); May 6, 1965
(4) Don't Look Back soundtrack
(5) Odeon (Liverpool, UK); May 14, 1966
(6) ABC Theatre (Edinburgh, UK); May 20, 1966
(7) Disco Teen '66

Tracklist: (1) I Don't Believe You, Chimes of Freedom, Motorpsycho Nitemare, Mr. Tambourine Man, All I Really I Want To Do, Black Crow Blues, I Shall Be Free #10
(2) All I Really Want To Do
(3) Don't Think Twice
(4) Love Is Just A Four Letter Word (Joan Baez), It's All Over Now Baby Blue, To Sing For You (Donovan), Talking World War III Blues
(5) Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
(6) One Too Many Mornings
(7) Positively Fourth Street (variant mix)

CDG: The meaty stuff from the Grogan Acetates, including the earliest known recording of "Mr Tambourine Man." The rest of the acetates are rough versions of the official tracks, sometimes including moments edited out for the album, and an extra verse in "All I Really Want To Do." The filler is mostly common material.

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

Laughing Camel HUMP 001/002 [T-075]

(1) Empire (Liverpool, UK); June 27, 1996
(2) Empire (Liverpool, UK); June 26, 1996
(3) Adelphi Theatre (Dublin, Eire); May 5, 1966

Tracklist: (1) Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat, Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You, All Along The Watchtower, Under The Red Sky, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Silvio, Mr. Tambourine Man, John Brown, To Ramona, Ballad Of A Thin Man, When I Paint My Masterpiece, Seven Days, Alabama Getaway, It Ain't Me, Babe, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35
(2) Drifter's Escape, Man In The Long Black Coat, Positively Fourth Street, Watching the River Flow
(3) Visions Of Johanna

DEEP: Dylan hits the ground running from the get-go here; this one rocks your socks off immediately. Quality is a bit bottom heavy and needs some of the old EQ to balance things out. I thought the vocals were a bit harsh on first listen but subsequent hearings have grown on me. For a show I was not enamored of at first, this one sure has left its mark after repeated listenings. Nice first- time outing for the humpers from Laughing Camel. Highly recommended.

CDG: Bass-heavy recording of a nice performance. The '96 filler is well-chosen; the '66 filler pointless (and incomplete).

Tracklist: Gotta Serve Somebody, I Believe In You, When You Gonna Wake Up, When He Returns, Man Gave Names To All The Animals, Precious Angel, Slow Train, Covenant Woman, Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking, Do Right To Me Baby, Solid Rock, Saving Grace, Saved, What Can I Do For You, In The Garden, Blessed Is The Name, Pressing On

ESCAPING ON THE RUN

Moonlight 9638/39 [T-071]

Muziekcentrum (Utrecht, Netherlands); June 20, 1996

Tracklist: Drifter's Escape, Shake Sugaree, All Along The Watchtower, Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You, Watching The River Flow, Silvio, Mr Tambourine Man, John Brown, Mama You Been On My Mind: Maggie's Farm, When I Paint My Masterpiece, Seven Days, Alabama Getaway, Girl From The North Country, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35

DEEP: The first CD to arise and bust out of its clothes from the 1996 tour. I was a bit disappointed at first, but subsequent listens have found the quality to be quite acceptable. Not up to the standards of the best '95'ers, mind you - but enjoyable nonetheless. The recording is quite clear, vocals crisp and distinct and the instruments and nuances are there. Mr. Bob and band's performance is a good one. Not bad for a start, and recommended.

CDG: Very good quality tape of an excellent show; I was there so I can tell ;-). It's a shame there is no filler.

ESCAPING ON THE RUN Volume 2

Moonlight 9640/41 [T-072]

Muziekcentrum (Utrecht, Holland); June 21, 1996

Tracklist: Drifter's Escape, Man In The Long Black Coat, All Along The Watchtower, Positively Fourth Street, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Silvio, Boots Of Spanish Leather, Desolation Row, Friend Of The Devil, Ballad Of A Thin Man, She Belongs To Me, Seven Days, Alabama Getaway, My Back Pages, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35

DEEP: A better performance on volume 2 and a more enjoyable set list; the sound is quite similar. Wonderful performance all around and an enjoyable listen. If you're going to get only one of the above, I'd recommend volume 2. (One negative is the lack of bonus trax. Nice artwork and graphics on both sets with glossy color photos of Bob in pink silk adorning front, back and inserts.

CDG: Very good quality tape of an excellent show; I was there so I can tell ;-). It's a shame there is no filler.

A fan-produced and fan-circulated collection, not a commercial product, including one version of every song performed in Dylan's acoustic sets during his late spring/early summer 1998 European tour. Almost all tracks in at least very good quality; most are excellent or nearly excellent. The selection of performances is also first rate, and a few are exceptional.

(2) Like A Rolling Stone, It Ain't Me Babe, Mr Tambourine Man
(3) Roving Gambler, One Too Many Mornings, My Back Pages

DEEP: This complete set from the club tour is absolutely sensational. From the opening chords of a roaring "Maggie's Farm", the lethal doses hit furiously and often throughout the whole show. The sound on this particular field recording is loud and strong, upfront and vivid, and captures Dylan and the band perfectly, in both the full roaring electric blues and the tamer, more "subtle" acoustic tunes. The Voice is in your face, cracked and ancient, a voice from another age and time, yet rooted firmly in the here and now. The filler trax from the previous 2 nights are out of this world perfect. Beautiful package with 8 page booklet, color photos, El Rey info, a comical essay and LA Times review.

rmd: The sound quality is excellent: dry but in-your-face, with Dylan rasping, growling, whinnying, purring, and wildly phrasing in full glory.

(4) It Ain't Me Babe

ISIS: Needless to say track selection and recording quality is excellent.

EXCLUSIVE SERIES '94

ES 002 [T-065]

Europe 16-25 July 1994

Tracklist: Disease Of Conceit (7/25), Man In The Long Black Coat (7/25), Every Grain Of Sand (7/21), Mr Tambourine Man, Blowin' In The Wind, Jokerman, Just Like A Woman, Love Minus Zero/No Limit, I Shall Be Released, Knockin On Heaven's Door (7/24), One Too Many Mornings (7/24)

DEEP: Some Dylan compilations don't quite measure up (i.e. some Wanted Man's) for a number of reasons - disparity in quality, misguided track selection, short disks - they have a feel of being thrown together to meet a deadline. The ones that do measure up have a feel of being put together by someone who really appreciates the music. This disk falls strongly into the latter category. The quality is consistently excellent on all eleven tracks, quite amazing considering that 5 shows are represented, and care was given to select tracks for both rarity of play and performance quality. Dylan and the band are at the top of their game on all these tracks. A classy looking package, too.

CDG: A compilation, taken from the European tour 1994, all in exceptional quality. Good selection of tracks from an excellent tour.

(5) Warfield Theater (San Francisco, CA); May 23, 1995
(6) Labatts Apollo (Manchester, UK); April 3, 1995
(7) Stadtpark (Hamburg, Germany); July 2, 1995
(8) Warfield Theater (San Francisco, CA); May 23, 1995
(9) University Of Indiana (Bloomington, IN); October 26, 1995

Tracklist: (1) I Shall Be Released
(2) Lenny Bruce
(3) All Along The Watchtower; Forever Young (w/Bruce Springsteen)
(4) Restless Farewell
(5) Jokerman
(6) Where Teardrops Fall
(7) If Not For You
(8) Queen Jane Approximately
(9) When I Paint My Masterpiece, Alabama Getaway

DEEP: The quality here is outstanding throughout, despite the wide variety of venues. The inclusion of the complete and sublime Frank Tribute performance of "Restless Farewell" makes this disk worth owning, but there are other killer performances as well. The only negative of this disk is that the last 2 trax are from the R&R HOF gig, which can be found on at least 3 other releases (albeit in slightly lower quality). I would be remiss to not mention the incredible front cover photo. Overall, a nice set and highly recommended.

CDG: Another fine selection of tracks in excellent quality, from a long touring year with exceptional performances.

rmd: A very nice compilation of Dylan performances in excellent sound quality, which can be faulted only for including the two extremely common tracks from the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame show.

EXCLUSIVE SERIES '96

ES 004 [T-509]

(1) Tempodrom (Berlin, Germany); June 17, 1996
(2) Schloss Tambach (Tambach, Germany); July 10, 1996
(3) Alte Oper (Frankfurt, Germany); June 19, 1996
(4) Sporthalle Alpenstrasse, Salzburg, Austria; July 9, 1996
(5) Hall Omnisports (Differdange, Luxembourg); June 24, 1996

Tracklist: Drifter's Escape, Shake Sugaree, Alabama Getaway (1); Absolutely Sweet Marie (2); Positively 4th Street, Friend Of The Devil (1); Tears Of Rage (2); Seven Days, Pretty Peggy-O (3); Shelter From The Storm (2); This Wheel's On Fire (4); New Minglewood Blues (5)

DEEP: This set is top heavy with 5 tracks from the incredible Berlin 6/17/96 show; however, these tracks fall short in the quality department, sounding a bit compressed and noisy. Fortunately, the remaining 7 tracks are all well chosen and inspired performances. A nice collection that would be much improved had they used a better source for the Berlin selections or, better yet, replaced them altogether with tracks from other shows.

rmd: The sound quality is among the best I've heard on a live bootleg. Haven't taken the CD off the player. Dylan's voice is really excellent throughout, and the band simply cooks. (TIMHRK)

EXITOS DE SIEMPRE

To be avoided. This is a pirate disc repackaging classic studio tracks from the 1960s, usually selling at an inflated price.

EYES OF THE IDOL

QRecords 13/14 [T-544]

(1) Stadthalle (Magdeburg, Germany); July 12, 1996
(2) Zeltfestival (Konstanz, Germany); July 3, 1996
(3) Palace (Louisville, KY); May 7, 1996

Tracklist: To Be Alone With You, Lay Lady Lay, All Along The Watchtower, Positively Fourth Street, It Takes A Lot to Laugh, Silvio, Ballad Of Hollis Brown, Gates Of Eden, Mr Tambourine Man, Jokerman, Like A Rolling Stone, Absolutely Sweet Marie, Times They Are A-Changin', Rainy Day Women #12 & 35
(2) Maggie's Farm, I'll Remember You, Everything Is Broken, Times They Are A-Changin'
(3) Never Gonna Be The Same Again

DEEP: The sound quality is astonishing. The full force of Dylan's vocals come through loud and clear, upfront and strong, every nuance and inflection fully intact and true. The acoustic tracks just leap out of the speakers and sound so alive. The balance is perfect - Dylan's vocals ride above the equally forceful instrumentation in perfect sync. Every instrument is clearly defined. The setlist is a doozy, more varied than most. The performance is special. The throttle was opened up from the get-go and stayed on throughout. More even than usual, Bob's vocals are playful and crisp and alive with adrenaline. The trump card, though, would be the killer filler. Finally, we get the tracks from Konstanz with Boyd Tinsley of the Dave Matthews Band accompanying Bob on violin. Very well though out, this set. The original artwork is a very interesting and deceptively simple pastel portrait of Bob, amidst a wonderful design of pastel squares and blocks, a classy touch to an all-around class package.

CDG: Another Euro '96 show, but a special one! An audience recording in superb quality; one of the best performances of that tour. The filler tracks are well picked, of somewhat lesser quality than the main dish, but still highly enjoyable.
