Good soundboard; not great, but very listenable, not harsh or
compressed, just a littly blurry and hissy. Completely enjoyable,
and historically essential.

CDG: A clear, crisp recording of a '93 show with a
relatively standard setlist, including several beautiful
performances.
rmd: This one stands out among the 1993 shows as something
different and special. There is a spooky and mystical quality to
it. (MR)

(8) When I Paint My Masterpiece
DEEP: Another striking package from the folks at Dandelion,
this one a color, glossy 20 page booklet full of some terrific
"Temples In Flames" pics and a long essay. Some of the
pictures have to be seen to be believed and portray Bob in both
flattering and unflattering terms. A wonderfully packaged set that
makes all prior 1987 Eurotour CDs take a seat far in the rear to
this embarassment of riches. The complete Wembley is presented in
oh-so-fine sound and the filler just takes it to another level. A
near-perfect overview of the latter stages of Europe '87.
rmd: An absolutely stunning set with gorgeous, professional packaging. The sound quality of the main show is simply outstanding. Sound quality on the filler varies from outstanding to just good, with nothing unpleasantly bad. The performances are occasionally uneven, but still amount to a hoard of senseless riches. (DM)
rmd: Overall, a step backward from the great 1986 shows . In comparison, these renditions are flat and halfhearted.

FINAL THEME
DIYE 66/67 1CD/1CDROM
Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid soundtrack session
Tracklist: Main Title Theme (Billy), Cantina Theme (Working For The
Law), Billy Surrenders, River Theme, Billy, Cantina Theme
Revisited, Billy, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Turkey Chase, Billy,
Final Theme, Working For The Law, River Theme, Bunkhouse Theme,
River Theme, Working For The Law (Whorehouse Theme), Final Theme,
Billy
NOTE: This set, which at least borders on being a pirate
project, reportedly consists of a standard audio CD plus a CD-ROM
including clips from the movie, a Dylan discography, pictures, and
other features. The packaging misidentifies several tracks, and
not all of the listed tracks can be definitively matched to the
proper titles; this corrected track listing is therefore somewhat
tentative. Most tracks are instrumental. Sources for the CD-ROM
are not identified. By some accounts, the audio CD circulates
separately under the same title.

material. Essential to the smallest Dylan collection.

(2) Ragged And Dirty, Lay Lady Lay, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight,
Queen Jane Approximately, Jack-A-Roe, One Too Many Mornings, I Want
You, Ring Them Bells, My Back Pages, Forever Young
CDG: An excellent performances in good/very good sound
before an exuberant audience that reacts to Dylan's nuances. The
second set cooks.

FIRST TIME AROUND
Vigotone 187/188 2D
Sydney Stadium (Sydney, Australia); April 13 (or 16), 1966
Tracklist: She Belongs To Me, Fourth Time Around, Visions Of Johanna, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Desolation Row, Just Like A Woman, Mr. Tambourine Man, Tell Me Momma, I Don't Believe You, Baby Let Me Follow You Down, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Leopardskin
Pillbox Hat, One Too Many Mornings, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Positively Fourth Street
rmd: A very nice addition to any Dylan collection. The packaging is very neat, and professionally done. The quality of the recording is superb, and of course the performances are amazing. The chatter from Dylan in between songs was very cool too.
NOTE: My indication here that the date of this recording is not settled is something of a minor heresy. The recording does not match Craig McGregor's relatively detailed account of the April 13 concert, but most expert collectors accept the attribution on the box in which the tape was found. McGregor's late-60's account of Dylan's Australian tour was not free of errors.

Thyme, Mama You Been On My Mind, Mr Tambourine Man, Tangled Up In
Blue
(3) I Don't Believe You
(4) With God On Our Side
(5) It's Airight Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)
DEEP: Very listenable, more so than "Get Ready! Tonite Bob is Staying Here
With You" if only because of the evenness of the
recording. Performance is phenomenal, a lot of great acoustic stuff
and hey, an entire '75 show can't be bad. Another excellent job --
if you like Rolling Thunder, highly recommended. Nice cover,
too.

FLASHING FOR THE REFUGEES
Speedball 009 [T-147]
Vorst National (Brussels, Belgium); October 8, 1987
Tracklist: Desolation Row, Like A Rolling Stone, Times They Are A
Changin', Gotta Serve Somebody, Maggie's Farm, Seņor, I Want You,
Pledging My Time, Chimes Of Freedom, Lonesome Death Of Hattie
Carroll, Don't Think Twice, I And I, Shot Of Love, Blowin' In The
Wind, Man Gave Names To All The Animals, In The Garden
NOTE: By some reports, the source tape here was slightly
sped up to fit the entire show on a single CD.
rmd: This is exactly what I want to see. A complete show,
properly labeled, in excellent audience sound. They've even chosen
a great concert. Nothing unprofessional about this disc, and it
deserves a very strong recommendation. The packaging here is
minimal, but the cover includes a color picture of Bob looking
angrily at his cigarette, with a harmonica in a holder around his
neck. (Anthony Kapolka)
CDG: Very good recording of a tight show with excellent
song selection. The Heartbreakers are near-perfect throughout the
long show. A diverse set of soulful performances.

Tracklist: (1) It Ain't Me Babe. All I Really Want To Do, To

(2) Don't Think Twice
(3) All I Really Wanna Do (workshop), Maggie's Farm, Like A Rolling
Stone, Phantom Engineer, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Mr Tambourine
Man
(4) Tombstone Blues, It Ain't Me Babe
DEEP: Terrific quality performances from Newport '64 and
'65, some only recently circulating. The electric Newport has
never been heard in better quality. The 2 "missing"
tracks from the "first" Hollywood Bowl 9/1/65 tape are
plugged in here, too. Presented in superb sound. Not to be
missed.
ISIS: A thoughtfully arranged compilation vividly
documenting Dylan's shuffle from acoustic to electric. At Newport
in 1964, his vocals are crystalline, strained almost to the point
of shattering and yet at the same time, confrontational and
defiant. The performances are fresh and unhurried, majestic and
captivating. One year later, Dylan plugs in and the world shifts a
little on its axis - except that it all seems so innocent when you
listen to it now. Astounding music, not fully polished; but that
adds rather than detracts from its appeal. The Hollywood Bowl
recordings are strangely delightful to listen to - full of light
and space. A pleasant listen and momentously historical.

FOLKSINGER'S CHOICE
Yellow Dog 017 [T-200]
Cynthia Gooding Radio Show (New York, NY); February 1962

Lightning, Hard Travelin', Death Of Emmett Till, Standing On The
Highway, Roll On John, Stealin', Long Time Man Feel Bad, Baby
Please Don't Go, Hard Times In New York
rmd: An absolutely delightful disc! Great performances of
(mostly standard) songs interspersed with a conversation with
Cynthia Gooding. Bob's bashfulness is very endearing. The sound
quality is excellent; this is a must-have disc.

Tracklist: (1) (Bruce Springsteen) Johnny B. Goode (w/Chuck Berry),
Shake Rattle And Roll, Hey Bo Diddley/She's The One, Great Balls Of
Fire (w/Jerry Lee Lewis), Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On (w/Jerry Lee
Lewis), Darkness On The Edge Of Town
(2) (Bob Dylan) All Along The Watchtower, Just Like A Woman, Seeing
The Real You At Last, Highway 61 Revisited, Forever Young
(w/Springsteen)
(3) Rock'n'Roll Music (Springsteen, Berry, Melissa Etheridge et
al)
DEEP: The complete performances of Dylan and Springsteen at
the Hall of Fame bash in Cleveland in excellent, excellent quality.
No need to rehash the much-discussed performance of Mr. Bob and
Band other than to say they rose to the occasion. You can hear the
voice and the band in all their glory. Nice duet, too. The Bruce
portion is with the E Street Band as they follow Chuck Berry and
Jerry Lee through some old standards, plus two of Bruce's own cuts.
Nice enough stuff but the real deal begins with the opening chords
to "All Along The Watchtower." Highly recommended.
NOTE: The contents of this disc are apparently identical to
those of "Rock And Roll Hall Of
Fame."

(2) The Weight, Forever Young, Highway 61 Revisited, Like A Rolling Stone, Maggie's
Farm, Blowin' In The Wind
(3) Just Like A Woman, Hurricane, Lay Lady Lay, One More Cup Of

EDLIS: Ice magazine has reported this CD is a clone
of "The Poet & the Players."
CDG: Not recommended. The sound is extremely bass-heavy,
and needs substantial equalization. The CDR version is even
worse.
NOTE: Not all reported versions of this set include the
final track, "One More Cup Of Coffee."

EDLIS: The sound of this recording is very good, if rather
heavy on bass -- a problem easily handled by a little knob
twisting.

Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Times They Are A-Changin', Don't Think
Twice, Gates Of Eden, Just Like A Woman, It's Alright Ma, Rag Mama
Rag, This Wheel's On Fire, The Shape I'm In
CDG: An audience recording, and not a bad one considering
its vintage. Incomplete, including most of the Band's songs, but
missing Dylan's closing set and encore. If you like the '74 tour
you'll probably like this one.

THE FREEWHEELIN' OUTTAKES
Vigotone 115 [T-304]
Freewheelin' Bob Dylan sessions (New York, NY); April-
November 1962
Tracklist: Baby Please Don't Go, Corrina Corrina, The Death Of
Emmett Till, Mixed Up Confusion, Lonesome Whistle Blues, Talkin'

Mamma, Rocks And Gravel, Going To New Orleans, Let Me Die In My
Footsteps, The Ballad Of Hollis Brown, Wichita, Sally Gal, Whatcha
Gonna Do, Mixed Up Confusion, Rocks And Gravel, That's Alright
Mama, Rocks And Gravel, Corrina Corrina, Milkcow's Calf Blues,
Wichita, Whatcha Gonna Do, Baby I'm In The Mood For You, Sally
Gal
rmd: A great sounding CD. The studio tracks are all
excellent; The acetates are very good but sound like acetates. The
artwork, including an alternate picture from the
Freewheelin' cover shoot, is excellent too. If you like this
era, this is the best that's out on CD that I'm aware of. (Arnie
Stodolsky)
AMG: A superb 25-song compilation of the best unreleased
material from the '62 studio sessions, including interesting
originals, a bunch of solid folk and blues covers, alternates of a
few tracks that were released, and, most fascinating of all,
several tracks featuring electric band accompaniment.

FRENCH GIRL
Silver Rarities 87/88/89 [T-291]
Grateful Dead rehearsals (San Rafael, CA); April 1987
Tracklist: The Times They Are A-Changin', When I Paint My
Masterpiece, Man Of Peace, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, Ballad Of Ira
Hayes, I Want You, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Memphis Blues Again, Dead
Man Dead Man, Queen Jane Approximately, Boy In The Bubble, The
French Girl, In The Summertime, Man Of Peace, Union Sundown, It's
All Over Now Baby Blue, Joey, If Not For You, Slow Train, Tomorrow
Is A Long Time, Ballad Of Frankie Lee And Judas Priest, John Brown,
Don't Keep Me Waiting Too Long, Stealin', I Want You, Oh Boy,
Tangled Up In Blue, Walking Down The Line, Simple Twist Of Fate,
Gotta Serve Somebody, Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking, Maggie's
Farm, Chimes Of Freedom, All I Really Want To Do, John Brown, Heart
Of Mine, Rolling In My Sweet Baby's Arms, John Hardy, Heart Of
Mine, Wicked Messenger, Watching The River Flow
DEEP: Quality is very good, albeit a little hissy. Pretty
cool to hear Dylan do some of the older material.

FRIEND OF THE DEVIL
Wanted Man 64/65 [T-017]
The Orpheum (Minneapolis, MN); August-September 1992
Tracklist: Everything Is Broken, Friend Of The Devil (9/2), All
Along The Watchtower, Under The Red Sky (9/2), Just Like A Woman,
It Takes A Lot To Laugh (9/3), I Believe In You (9/3), I'll Be Your
Baby Tonight (8/31), Ballad Of Hollis Brown (8/31), Hard Rain's A-
Gonna Fall (9/2), To Ramona (8/30), It's All Over Now Baby Blue
(9/2), Visions Of Johanna (9/3), Every Grain Of Sand (9/3), If Not
For You (8/31), I And I (8/30), Idiot Wind (8/30), Lenny Bruce
(8/30), To Be Alone With You (8/30), What Good Am I, Highway 61
Revisited, It Ain't Me Babe
DEEP: Dylan played 50 songs during this stint and a nice
selection of 22 are presented here in decent but (all too common
for Wanted Man) not outstanding quality. The disks are certainly
very listenable and contain some outstanding performances; however,
separation is not a strong point and the sound does not have the
crispness/clarity that distinguishes the better releases. On the
plus side, Dylan's vocals shine bright and the track selections
make this a worthwhile and unified set. Although a compilation,
it's put together like a regular show. Lukewarm recommendation.

FRIEND TO THE MARTYR (OUTFIDELS)
Silver Rarities 44 [T-205]
Power Station (New York, NY); April 11-May 8, 1983
Tracklist: Jokerman, Don't Fall Apart On Me Tonight, I And I, Clean
Cut Kid, Julius And Ethel, Death Is Not The End, Foot Of pride,
Sweetheart Like You, I And I, Someone's Got A Hold Of My Heart,
Union Sundown, Tell Me, Blind Willie McTell, This Was My Love
BIABH: To be avoided. A sloppy package superseded by
"Rough Cuts," which is more
complete, has superior overall sound quality, and is unmarred by
digital noise.

FRIENDS AND OTHER STRANGERS
Moontunes 016 [T-023]
Last Waltz Rough Mix (San Francisco, CA); November 25, 1976
Tracklist: Down South In New Orleans (Dr. John); All Our Past
Times, Further On Up The Road (Eric Clapton); Helpless, Four Strong
Winds (Neil Young); Furry Sings The Blues (Joni Mitchell); Tura
Lura Lura, Caravan (Van Morrison); Acadian Driftwood (Band); Baby
Let Me Follow You Down, Hazel, I Don't Believe You, Forever Young,
Baby Let Me Follow You Down; I Shall Be Released (ensemble)
DEEP: Dylan's complete set at the Last Waltz, including a
delightful "Hazel" not issued as part of the official
release. This mono soundboard is a tad below what you'd consider
excellent but the naked rawness and rough-edged feel more than make
up for it. Also included is the "missing" verse from
"Forever Young." The official release suffered from
considerable overdubbing - no such problem here. The complete sets
by Van Morrison, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell are also included,
and as a huge bonus the unissued "Acadian Driftwood" by
the Band and Eric Clapton's "All Our Past Times." Nice
job, safe to say this is more "true sounding" than the
official release.

DEEP A stunning upgrade of the virtually complete Hollywood
Bowl soundboard. This one sheds what seems like 3 layers of skin
from previous editions and emerges with a brightness and clarity
that enhances the listening experience immensely. Bob's vocals are
clear, distinct and without the distortion on the louder vocal
passages. The acoustic set has more definition and a lot more
"air" between the vocals and guitar. The electric set
benefits even more from the significant upgrade - Robbie's guitar
is more prominent, Kooper's keyboards more distinct and the drums
have a punchier sound, more snap than thud. Bob's vocals are much
clearer. The recording has a crisper, more defined and punchier
sound with very little of the compression found on the earlier
versions. The balance of the material is from Newport '64 and '65,
missing several tracks. Quality is excellent in every way. A
terrific package on this one with a vintage close-up cover shot of
Bob, a heavy duty, 16 page glossy b&w booklet full of more vintage
'65 and '66 pics (some unpublished, I believe), classy graphics and
picture disk CDs. Essential.
rmd: Why, oh, why, did they cut away the introduction, and
all the between-songs stuff? And why omit the Newport "Mr.
Tambourine Man?" To make a few more people buy "Folk
Rogue," or what? There would have been plenty of room on disc
one of this set. I don't get it. I don't buy it. (SK)

(2) It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Tupelo Honey (w/Van Morrison),
Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat
DEEP: Well below the better 1984 discs in terms of sound
quality.
EDLIS: Complete recording of one of the best Dylan concerts ever in very good quality. Highly recommended.

Maggie's Farm, Man In The Long Black Coat, It Ain't Me Babe
(2) Boots Of Spanish Leather, Born In Time
rmd: This audience recording has wonderfully clear sound --
perhaps too clear, because it sometimes seems that every member of
the audience can be heard on the source tape. A wonderful, loose-
feeling performance, a real treat that's not spoiled by the crowd
noise.

DEEP: A collection of 18 of the 30+ tracks that have, at one
time or another, resided on the official website. The fidelity of
the recordings is incredible. To call the quality of the Supper
Club recordings or the "Shelter" from Roseland '94
astonishing would not be overstating the case here; the 3 Supper
Club tracks are worth the price of admission. Night and day is an
understatement. The rest of the set is peppered with more goodies
- some wondrous, some very good, some okay. One constant is the
great sound throughout. Nice, colorful package with small
booklet/notations for each track.
NOTE: The release of these discs is widely believed to have
provoked both the reduction of the number of unreleased recordings
available at bobdylan.com and the elimination of the site
archives.

Ain't No Lie (Hamburg 6/12/98), Friend Of The Devil (Binghampton

DEEP: Sound is excellent throughout. The package is nifty:
a color glossy housing, with an eight-page booklet including a
track by track review as well as snazzy pics. A fine listen.
rmd: Collection of downloaded tracks from the official
website, all in the best possible quality and mixed between tracks
to give a 'continuous' feel. Although Wild Wolf's "Masters (bobdylan.com)"
featured slightly smoother versions of some of these tracks, the
dynamics here are superior, as is the track selection. A far more
compelling representation of this material.

(2) Brixton Academy (London, UK); March 29, 1995

Along The Watchtower, Jokerman, Every Grain Of Sand, Positively
Fourth Street, Mr Tambourine Man, Masters Of War, Love Minus Zero,
God Knows, Memphis Blues Again, I Believe In You, Like A Rolling
Stone, Times They Are A-Changin, I Shall Be Released
(2) I Want You, Just Like A Woman, It Takes A Lot To Laugh, Boots
Of Spanish Leather, Don't Think Twice
DEEP: Without going overboard with too many plaudits, these
disks are sensational. Recording quality far exceeds "Skipping Reels Of Rhyme,"
while the better "Brixton
Blues" falls short in the end. Good dynamics, crystal
clear vocals and solid overall sound. Everything is pushed to a
greater degree of clarity. Overall the slightly ragged production
on the filler trax is overshadowed by the recording quality. Nice
package and inserts, too.
rmd: If you enjoyed Bob's Full
House (which is one of the greatest performances/recordings I
know - maybe THE greatest) then you just have this for the full
Brixton experience. Recording quality is first class, and the
performances . . well, maybe not quite so brimming with riches as
"Full House" - but still oh so very fine. The "Love
Minus Zero" is beyond words.
