rmd: The packaging is awesome, with lots of 1966 photos, and the music is incredible.

HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY ERIC

Dandelion DL017

Shangri-La Studios (Malibu, CA); March 30, 1976

Tracklist: Billy Preston, It's Eric Clapton's Birthday; Van Morrison, Who Do You Love, Stormy Monday; Bob Dylan, Spanish Is The Loving Tongue, Water Is Wide, Idiot Wind; Rick Danko, Hard Times; instrumental jam; Clapton, Big River; Levon Helm, Steppin' Out

DEEP: Clapton says,"I had a magnificent birthday party right in the middle of the sessions and we decided to record everything and everybody that came into the studio. There's Billy Preston singing a couple of Ray Charles songs with The Band backing him along with Jesse Ed Davis, me, Robbie Robertson and Woody (Ron Wood) on guitars. Bob showed up about eight o'clock in the morning and it went on from there." Best quality I've heard of this material, particularly the Dylan segment. A loose, fun disk, packaged nicely with a color 8 page booklet.

(2) All Along The Watchtower, Shelter From The Storm, Gotta Serve Somebody, Wiggle Wiggle, Simple Twist Of Fate, Lakes Of Pontchartrain, Girl From The North Country, Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, It Ain't Me Babe, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Homeward Bound

HARD AND FAST

Hard Beat 9 [T-675]

Wolf Trap (Vienna, VA); September 8, 1993 (line)

Tracklist: Memphis Blues Again, All Along The Watchtower, Positively Fourth Street, Silvio, Born In Time, BlackJack Davey, Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, Boots Of Spanish Leather, Maggie's Farm, Series Of Dreams, It Ain't Me Babe

NOTE: A clone of
"The Real Sound."

rmd: Not quite soundboard quality, taken from a hearing-impaired feed. While the "Series Of Dreams" makes the concert essential, the rest of Dylan's performance is very good.

HARD RAIN OVER DENVER

Buffalo 010 1CDR

Fiddler's Green (Denver, CO); June 15, 1988

Tracklist: Subterranean Homesick Blues, One More Cup Of Coffee, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Memphis Blues Again, You're A Big Girl Now, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Mama You Been On My Mind, Eileen Aroon, Just Like A Woman, Seeing The Real You At Last, Simple Twist Of Fate, Like A Rolling Stone, Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall

NOTE: This CD omits two songs from the Denver performance.

HARD RAIN REHEARSALS

no label 2CDR

S.I.R. Studio rehearsals (Los Angeles, CA); January 22-23, 1976

Tracklist:

NOTE: Unverified listing. This set may combine incorrectly attributed April/May rehearsals with the commonly circulating January 23 tracks.

A HARD RAIN'S GONNA FALL

Drive 3068 [T-100]

(1) Adelphi Theatre (Dublin, Eire); May 5, 1966
(2) Studs Terkel's Wax Museum (Chicago, IL); April 26, 1963
(3) Adelphi Theatre (Dublin, Eire); May 5, 1966

Tracklist: (1) Visions Of Johanna, 4th Time Around. It's All Over Now Baby Blue
(2) Farewell, Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, Bob Dylan's Dream, Boots of Spanish Leather, John Brown, Who Killed Davey Moore?, Blowin' In The Wind
(3) Desolation Row, Just Like A Woman, Mr. Tambourine Man

rmd: This is one strange disc. To interweave these two shows, Drive inserted canned crowd noises between all the songs -- particularly weird because the Terkel tape is just an interview (deleted entirely here) and Bob playing. The sound quality varies. The Adelphi stuff is pretty good; the Terkel songs are excellent. The packaging includes very dubious claims about the source recordings. (Anthony Kapolka)

HARD REIGN OVER WEMBLEY

no label 2CDR

(1) Wembley Arena (London, UK); June 27, 1998
(2) National Exhibition Centre (Birmingham, UK); June 24, 1998

(2) Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You, Born In Time, Girl From The North Country, John Brown, Desolation Row, Knockin' On Heaven's Door (w/Van Morrison), Highway 61 Revisited

NOTE: This fan-circulated set appears to be identical to
"Six Days In June Vol 3"; by some accounts cloned from it, but this could be the original version.

HARD TIMES IN ALABAMA

Real Live 2CD [T-355]

(1) Civic Center (Huntsville, AL); April 19, 1993
(2) Wolf Trap (Vienna, VA); September 8, 1993
(3) The Big Six-O (Austin, TX); April 28, 1993 (line)

Tracklist: Hard Times, Memphis Blues Again, All Along The Watchtower, You're A Big Girl Now, Tangled Up In Blue, Born In Time, Watching The River Flow, Jim Jones, Tomorrow Night, Gates Of Eden, Don't Think Twice, Cat's In The Well, I And I, Shelter From The Storm, Everything Is Broken, What Good Am I?, Maggie's Farm, It Ain't Me Babe
(2) Black Jack Davey, God Knows, Series Of Dreams
(3) Pancho And Lefty, Hard Times

rmd: The perfect marriage between recording and performance. One of the cleanest audience recordings out there, rivalling the best of any year for quality, fidelity, clarity, and richness of sound. The music is a delight, and the uptempo songs are just superbly played and performed. The filler tracks are also outstanding. (M)
The sound here is beautiful. Really warm, rich, defined; a truly unbelievable audience recording that blows away even many soundboards. In addition to its technical excellence, this recording captures an elusive vibe, a certain glow, a musicality that's often missing from otherwise excellent recordings. Dylan generally sings softly here, a bit pinched at times, but overall his vocals are great. The band sounds wonderful, sugar-sweet, stretching like a rubber band. A lot of mellow jams. Sound on the filler tracks is much less warm.

HARD TIMES IN MARSEILLE

Moonlight Records 9510/9511 [T-453]

Palais Des Sport (Marseilles, France) June 29, 1993 (line)

Tracklist: Hard Times, Memphis Blues Again, All Along The Watchtower, Just Like A Woman, Tangled Up In Blue, Shelter From The Storm, Watching The River Flow, Little Moses, Tomorrow Night, Baby Blue, Desolation Row, Cat's In The Well, I And I, My Back Pages, Maggie's Farm, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, It Ain't Me Babe

DEEP: After repeated listenings of this set, I am awestruck by the quality. Soundboard recordings can often sound harsh and unbalanced, this one is gentle and uncluttered without sounding hollow; Dylan's vocals are immaculate and the quality of his performance is heightened by the characteristics of the recording which bring out the fragility behind the harshness of the vocals.

HARD TIMES IN NEW YORK CITY

RZ001 [T-518]

(1) Cynthia Gooding's Apartment (New York, NY); April 1962
(2) Gerdes Folk City (New York, NY); September 1961
(3) Carnegie Recital Hall (New York, NY); November 4, 1961 (line)
(4) Gerdes Folk City (New York, NY); April 1962
(5) Finjan Club (Montreal, QU); July 2, 1962

Tracklist: (1) Ranger's Command, Wichita, Rocks And Gravel
(2) San Francisco Bay Blues (w/Jim Kweskin), The Great Divide (w/Jim Kweskin)
(3) Pretty Peggy-O, In The Pines, Gospel Plow, 1913 Massacre, Backwater Blues, Young But Daily Growin'
(4) Honey Just Allow Me One More Chance, Talkin' New York/Talkin' Folklore Center, Corrina Corrina, Deep Ellum Blues, Blowin' In The Wind
(5) Muleskinner Blues

DEEP: Early New York City material, including some heretofore unreleased-on-CD tracks. Nice, folky stuff here in quality that I imagine is as good as it gets in normal circulating circles. Historic performances from Gerdes and Carnegie Recital are sandwiched around cuts from Cynthia Gooding's apartment tape. The "Blowin' In The Wind" from Gerdes might be the first ever live version. An outstanding, historic collection of early trax with a smashing B&W pic on the cover of Dylan walkin' the streets of the Big Apple. Clear plastic tray w/pic behind adds another nice touch to an extremely classy looking package.

ISIS: A compilation of tracks dating back to Dylan's arrival in New York. Recording quality is as good as it gets throughout, all excellency and sympathetically mastered. Somehow though, as a compilation, it doesn't quite do the period full justice.

EDLIS: A collection of performances from 1961-62 reported to be in as good as quality as they get for these recordings. The quality varies a little from track to track and does contain some hiss.

CDG: A compilation of very early tracks in excellent sound quality. All nice stuff if you're interested in this era; but only the Gerdes sections include all the circulating material.

rmd: The sound quality is good, the songs are good and the performances are good. For those who like the pure guitar, harmonica and voice Dylan it is excellent. It reminds me of the years of my youth misspent going to folkclubs.

(9) Pancho and Lefty
(10) Man Gave Names To All The Animals, When I Paint My Masterpiece
(11) Restless Farewell
(12) (spurious) Little Sussi Shallow Throat

DEEP: Although it has its moments, this is not on the level of its predecessor. Some trax are indeed extraordinary, others much less so. Overall, an uneven set but one that has some highly desirable cuts. I'll leave it as a toss up. If it matters to anyone, the packaging is top notch, with beautiful color live and candid shots and a nice looking color pic CD.

CDG: A nice selection of tracks in not so very good quality, with a few exceptions. Not too hard to find these tracks, either.

rmd: The whole thing is not really too impressive. Though there are a few nice takes on it that I hadn't heard before, I guess they are widely in circulation already. Quality differs greatly from song to song, both concerning performances and sound. There are some very enjoyable things here, but nothing that is really *Hard To Find*. (Christian Zeiser)

(13) Let It Be Me
(14) Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground
(15) Jokerman
(16) I Shall Be Released
(17) Couple More Years

NOTE: The bulk of this material is pirated, not bootlegged, from legitimate albums that are about as "hard to find" as a Borders bookstore or an Internet music retailer. The enterprise is reprehensible, particularly with regard to the Guthrie concert tracks -- where Dylan donated material for charitable purposes.

DEEP: No need to attempt a "review" other than to say that this is the true successor to "Hard To Find," gathering most, if not all, of the "hard to find" official releases not included on that first volume. Quality is excellent throughout. Not a bummer among the 21 tracks.

HARD TO FIND VOL 4

Treasure Records 187071-3 [T-507]

Tracklist: Old Rock And Roller (Hamburg, 7/3/90); People Putting People Down (Rome, 6/6/91); Tupelo Honey (Belfast, 2/6/91, w/Van Morrison); Crazy Love, Foreign Window, One Irish Rover (Athens, 6/27/89, w/Van Morrison); One Irish Rover (London, 6/12/93, w/Van Morrison); Forever Young (Letterman TV, 11/18/93); I Shall Be Released, Ring Them Bells (Great Music Experience, 5/22/94); Real Real Gone (Dublin, 4/12/95, w/Van Morrison); Ring Of Fire (Feeling Minnesota soundtrack); It Ain't Me Babe (Westwood Radio, 7/31/86); Got Love If You Want It, Important Words (Down In The Groove outtakes); Hard Times (Big Six-O, 4/28/93); Blowin' In The Wind (MLK Tribute, 1/20/86, w/ensemble); Mr. Tambourine Man (Roy Orbison Tribute, 2/24/90, w/Byrds); Most Of The Time (edited single); Knockin' On Heaven's Door (Italy, 7/5/96)

DEEP: The latest HTF ties together another interesting and eclectic batch of rare trax that should satisfy all tastes. A set that has a certain cohesion and overall excellent sound. It's nice to have things like this together in one place.

CDG: A strange selection of tracks in nice sound quality.

HARD TO FIND VOL 5

Tracklist: My Blue Eyed Jane, My Blue Eyed Jane (outtake version w/Emmylou Harris); Love Sick with the Grammy Speech; Shelter From The Storm (Jerry Maguire); My Back Pages, Tombstone Blues, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Boots Of Spanish Leather (Live '96/b-sides); Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Highway 61 Revisited (w/Sheryl Crow); I Shall Be Released (w/Elvis Costello); Mr Tambourine Man (w/Ramblin' Jack Elliott); Soon

DEEP: Another volume in the "Never Ending" HTF series, containing trax from the "Live '96" promo, "Love Sick" single b-sides, Jimmy Rodgers tribute and outtake with EmmyLou and a few audience recordings, plus the Gershwin tribute "Soon." Excellent quality throughout not for everybody but certainly worthwhile for some.

(6) Ain't Gonna Go To Hell For Anybody
(7) Coming From The Heart

NOTE: To be avoided. Once again, most of this material is no harder to find than an Internet music retailer's website. Many of the tracks are incorrectly identified by the CD packaging.

DEEP: An off kilter compilation presenting some officially released material alongside some unrelated unreleased material that leaves one wondering what was going through the compiler's mind. Somewhat useful only for the fact that the "Love Sick" single b-sides are all in one place. The rest is pretty much rehash and has been widely available. For the completists out there.

rmd: The first 7 tracks are pirated, hardly unreleased! Buy the Rhino Doug Sahm CD re-release, you should have the rest already. (AF)

HE'S GETTING READY FOR THE SHOW

Dandelion 045 [T-624]

Sportpaleis Ahoy (Rotterdam, Holland); June 15, 1998

Tracklist: Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat, You Ain't Going Nowhere, Cold Irons Bound, Just Like a Woman, Silvio, Desolation Row, Times They Are A-Changin', Tangled Up In Blue, Can't Wait, Make You Feel My Love, Highway 61 Revisited, It Ain't Me Babe, Love Sick, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35

DEEP: The Rotterdam festival show "compacted" to fit on a single disk, fading out "Rainy Day Women" 3 minutes in. Decent quality - a warm, gentle feel to it with a clear, distinct sound but having a somewhat cavernous, echoey vibe going. This improves during the 3-song acoustic set. A rather average disk -- not essential but nice to have an (almost) entire show on a single disk.

(5) Like A Rolling Stone
(6) She Belongs To Me, Fourth Time Around

NOTE: By some reports, the label for this CD should be Scorpio. Manchester tracks cloned from "Guitars Kissing."

HEARTBREAKER BLUES

Temple Records [T-502]

Olympiahalle (Munich, West Germany); September 30, 1987

Tracklist: Joey, Seeing The Real You At Last, Like A Rolling Stone, Shelter From The Storm, Tangled Up In Blue, I And I, Forever Young, Maggie's Farm, Gotta Serve Somebody, Don't Think Twice, It's Alright Ma, I Dreamed I Saw St Augustine, Dead Man Dead Man, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35

CDG: A 1987 show with the Heartbreakers that fits neatly onto one disc. Nice audience recording. The 1987 tour was a bit of a hit and miss tour if you ask me, but this rather a hit than a miss.

rmd: I like the Temples In Flames tour, but this show is just mediocre. Better shows from the tour are readily available. Sound quality is very nice, though, and there are some quality moments.

HEARTS OF FIRE SESSIONS

Countdown Factory [T-428]

Townhouse Studios (London, UK); August 27-28, 1986

Tracklist: The Usual, The Usual, The Usual, Ride This Train, Had A Dream About You Baby, Had A Dream About You Baby, Had A Dream About You Baby, Had A Dream About You Baby, Had A Dream About You Baby
rmd: The sound is good, but not up to official quality. "Had A Dream About You" is played in arrangements which vary greatly. The tracklist on the package omits 3 tracks, and the CD label is a weird assortment of random phrases.

NOTE: Not Recommended. This CD runs only 37 minutes, and omits nearly half the circulating tracks. A more complete version of the session can be found on
"The Never Ending Tour," compiled with an unrelated CD.

HEARTS OF FIRE Vol. 3

Reported by Isis online in late '96 or early '97, this turned out to be a slightly mangled title for "Hard To Find Vol 3."

HELP ME IN MY WEAKNESS

Corruptible Seed 2CDR

Riverport (St. Louis, MO); July 8, 2000

Tracklist: Oh Babe, It Ain't No Lie, To Ramona, Desolation Row, Don't Think Twice, Tangled Up In Blue, Searching For A Soldier's Grave, Country Pie, If Not For You, Memphis Blues Again, Simple Twist Of Fate, Drifter's Escape, Leopardskin Pillbox Hat, Things Have Changed, Like A Rolling Stone, Forever Young, Highway 61 Revisited

rmd: Sound quality is good but not first-rate -- the crowd is pretty chatty, but the main problem is the lack of instrument definition, especially on the louder songs. Still worth picking up, as the set list is a gem and the performances are energetic and fresh.

NOTE: Some versions of this set include filler tracks from from the label's other releases. The tracks reportedly duplicate songs from the principal content -- a practice which makes sense viewed in a commercial light, but which annoys some listeners.

HEROES OF THE 60'S

(2) Starlight Ballroom (Clearwater, FL); April 22, 1976 (afternoon) (video feed)
(3) Starlight Ballroom (Clearwater, FL); April 22, 1976 (evening) (video feed)

Tracklist: (1) Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, Blowin' In The Wind, Railroad Boy, Deportees, I Pity The Poor Immigrant, Mozambique
(2) Mr. Tambourine Man, Times They Are A-Changin', I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine, When I Paint My Masterpiece
(3) Like A Rolling Stone, Isis, Just Like A Woman, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Lay Lady Lay

NOTE: This disc is often listed as "Like A Rolling Stone," which appears more prominently on the front cover than the listed title. The Guide follows the title used on the standard T-list.

EDLIS: Sound quality is what you would expect from a video copy, more distortion and echo than from straight audio. Nevertheless enjoyable if you like Rolling Thunder.

DEEP: One of the best releases of 1995.

Tracklist: Somebody Touched Me, To Ramona, Mama You Been on My Mind, Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, Don't Think Twice, All Along the Watchtower, Highlands, Memphis Blues Again, Not Dark Yet, Everything is Broken, Girl from the North Country

rmd: An excellent, well-balanced audience recording that's unhappily incomplete, missing most of the encore songs.
rmd: The crisp, detailed sound captures the warmth and quiet soulfulness of the performance.

rmd: Very good sound quality.

NOTE: Reportedly issued in "a very limited edition" of 300 copies. The complete concert circulates freely as a fan project.

HIGHWAY 49 REVISITED

Top Cat 760501 [T-526]

Reid Green Coliseum (Hattiesburg, MS); May 1, 1976

Tracklist: Mr Tambourine Man, Simple Twist Of Fate, Where Did Vincent Van Gogh, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, Maggie's Farm, One Too Many Mornings, Isis, Railroad Boy, I Pity The Poor Immigrant, Shelter From The Storm [cut], I Threw It All Away, Memphis Blues Again, You're A Big Girl Now, You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go, Mozambique, Idiot Wind

DEEP: Who wouldn't welcome a fine quality document of a '76 show, there are so few, eh? Almost the entire Dylan set is presented here (3 tracks missing). The sound is a bit thin and lacking in the fullbodiedness we've come to expect, but that is more a function of the technology of the times than anything else. Still, the vocals are clear and distinct and the instruments are all there, though not as upfront as you'd like; but it won't detract from your enjoyment if the RTR turns you on. The show is a real treat and offers up some interesting performances. Dylan works through rock, folk, blues and country and the band handles all with equal aplomb and creates its own sound throughout. Anyway, an excellent show and a nice companion piece to the several excellent '76 soundboards that are circulating.

rmd: A very passable audience recording, with clear and audible sound. Performances are livelier than the official release; and the acoustic set is a treat. Dylan at his peak.

CDG: An higher quality audience recording of a nice show, capped by a great, very bitter, version of "Idiot Wind."

HIGHWAY OF DIAMONDS vol 1 - THE NEVER ENDING TOUR

WWL013 [T-599]

Tracklist: Frankie Lee And Judas Priest, Trail Of The Buffalo, And It Stoned Me, Tomorrow Is A Long Time, One More Cup Of Coffee, Pretty Peggy-O, Man In Me, Dignity, Positively 4th Street, Don't Think Twice, Like A Rolling Stone

DEEP: A semi-enjoyable compilation of tracks with every year represented save 1990 and 1994. While not up to the compilation standard of PURE HEAT or several HARD TO FIND sets, some intriguing performances from 1988-93 are included here, and some mostly forgettable ones from later years. Nice color cover. The disk would imply it's a promo - it's not.

rmd: This is one of your ordinary, sloppy, Bob live through the years compilations. The best tracks are available on other discs, in just as good or better quality.

HIGHWAY OF DIAMONDS vol 2-TV Performances 1993-97

WWL-014 [T-565]

(4) Leopard-Skin Pillbox Hat, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Silvio, Positively 4th Street, Highway 61 Revisited
(5) Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, Forever Young

DEEP: Superb sounding collection of various TV performances. No need for any critique here beyond listing the tracks. Great color cover from Willie's Big Six-O. A good one.

rmd: A very good disk. While these tracks are available on other disc, the sound quality doesn't get much better than this.

rmd: A very nice compilation of various covers recorded live. However, a collector will probably already have most of these tracks (in their original settings). The packaging is below what you would expect nowadays.

HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED AGAIN

Wild Wolf 6506 [T-174]

Highway 61 Revisited sessions (June 15-July 30, 1965)

Tracklist: Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window, Sitting On A Barbed Wire Fence, Like A Rolling Stone, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Highway 61 Revisited, Positively Fourth Street, It Takes A Lot To Laugh, Tombstone Blues, Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window, Desolation Row, Queen Jane Approximately, From A Buick 6

DEEP: Another reissue from the Scorpio folks, this one presenting the Highway 61 Revisited acetate tracks, including different mixes, mono mixes, outtakes and alternate/single versions. Quality is excellent but do expect the flaws in the acetate to cause some pops and clicks, and there are short periods where a buzzing noise is evident. A nice collection of things you may or may not have elsewhere. The package features some wild color pics of Bob from this period and many B&W pics from 1965 inside the studio.

NOTE: The CD packaging identifies this disc as "Highway 61 Revisted [sic] Again."

Presumably cloned from the original disc, in a new package.

HIMSELF

Tuff Bites 94.1003 [T-344]

Stanbaugh Auditorium (Youngstown, OH); November 2, 1992

Tracklist: I Can't Be Satisfied, If Not For You, All Along The Watchtower, Farewell To The Gold, I And I, Mama You Been On My Mind, Boots Of Spanish Leather, Mr. Tambourine Man, Gates Of Eden, Unbelievable, Hang Me Oh Hang Me, Times They Are A-Changin', Maggie's Farm, Shooting Star, Rainy Day Women # 12 & 35, It Ain't Me Babe

rmd: Really nice audience recording, bright and warm. The sound may not be quite as upfront as you'd want, and sometimes the vocals are a tad quiet, but the sound is clear and natural, with a truly listenable tone -- no grunge, compression, or echo. A pleasure to listen too. The setlist is extraordinary, and the performance excellent with many highlights.

(4) Sportpaleis Ahoy (Rotterdam, Netherland); June 6, 1984

Tracklist: (1) Highway 61 Revisited, Jokerman, All Along The Watchtower, Just Like A Woman. Maggie's Farm, I And I, License To Kill, Just My Imagination [Greg Sutton], Tangled Up In Blue, It Ain't Me Babe, Masters Of War, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding); Don't Think Twice, Tombstone Blues, Forever Young

(3) It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Girl from The North Country, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Man Of Peace, Every Grain Of Sand, Like A Rolling Stone
(4) Simple Twist Of Fate and/or Blowin' In The Wind

NOTE: A severely scrambled copy of a vinyl boot; at the very least, several of the sides are out of order. The final track, reported as "Gates Of Eden," which Dylan did not perform in 1984, is presumably one or both of the remaining unduplicated songs from the June 6 performance.

(2) Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
(3) The Man In Me
(4) When I Paint My Masterpiece
(5) Absolutely Sweet Marie, Viola Lee Blues

DEEP: This show is relatively unexciting, perhaps uninspired. Pedestrian setlist, pedestrian phrasing, performance by Dylan that never goes beyond ho-hum. The songs are mostly given routine readings, almost as if he's trying to be conservative and toned-down. The quality leaves a bit to be desired - it's nice and clear and very listenable but a bit thin and lacking in that warm, full sound we've come to expect. The bonus trax are well chosen and improve things a bit. Considering the performance and so-so quality, thumbs down on this one.

CDG: Recording quality is excellent. The performance is solid, but nothing special.

Reported as a fan project including the complete Allen Ginsberg session (with Dylan as sideman) from November 17, 1971. More likely the album Ginsberg assembled from at least two sessions in the fall of 1971, at one time intended for commercial release on Apple Records.

DEEP: Thin sounding with very little bottom and too much treble. Pretty much run of the mill show, too, save for the great "Ballad Of A Thin Man" with the Setzer horns. Lame packaging.

(2) Roving Gambler, Tangled Up In Blue, Cocaine Blues
(3) My Blue-Eyed Jane (w/Emmylou Harris

DEEP: The Atlanta recording seems to be taken from a videotape of the show and is excellent - full, spacious sound that really "breathes," nice separation, distinct instrumentation and upfront vocals that come through crisp and clear. Very well balanced with a nice bottom end; some video hiss barely detracts and is easily alleviated with a bit of the eq). Crowd noise is at a minimum and in the background. The fun and sheer enjoyment at playing shines through on every track. Overall, a top notch performance and sound to match - a real treat.

HUNTED (LIKE A CROCODILE)

Gashcat 001 [T-078]

Statenhal (Den Haag, Netherlands); June 10, 1989

Tracklist: Most Likely You Go Your Way, Ballad Of Hollis Brown, Masters Of War, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, Shelter From The Storm, Highway 61 Revisited , Mr Tambourine Man, Don't Think Twice, Knockin On Heaven's Door, I Don't Believe You, Trail Of The Buffalo, I Shall Be Released, Like A Rolling Stone, To Ramona, All Along The Watchtower

DEEP: Not my favorite tour ('89), as I find the shows to be hurried, somewhat boring and with none of the enjoyable subtle nuances that characterize shows in later years. This show is presented in very good quality and is reported to be one of the finest of that year. It's just OK. The band beats up the songs until the listener is punch drunk and it sounds as if Dylan gives almost all the songs the most perfunctory of treatments. He certainly is not singing with much care or enthusiasm, more like he's got a train to catch. That said, if you like the '89 tour then you'll like this show. Personally, though, there are other shows from that year that are better.

ISIS: Arguably one of Dylan's most memorable performances from 1989. A blistering recording of the complete show, warm a and full bodied with Dylan's vocals searing and upfront. An astounding performance delivered with confidence and powerful abruptness.

CDG: One of the best shows from the G.E. Smith period, complete and in great sound quality.

(2) It's All Over Now Baby Blue, All Along The Watchtower
(3) Where Are You Tonight

DEEP: It doesn't get much better than this. Far and away the most inspired, smokin' '78 performance I've heard. Dylan sounds possessed and sings with a preacher's fervor on every tune. An awe-inspiring performance by Dylan and band that leaves Budokan and most everything else from this tour in its wake, maybe the definitive show from 1978. Quality is full and bright, excellent for a '78 show. An all-time great.

rmd: Among the very best of the circulating '78 shows. The performance is top notch, and the packaging is exquisite. (S)
Sound quality is very good for the period, though not up to today's standards. The stories Dylan tells have to be heard to be believed. I've never heard anything like it from him before. I can't imagine a show being any more entertaining than this one. His singing is much wilder, more eccentric and passionate, than on Budokan, and many arrangements are different, less cheesy to me (though a few are still dreadful). (A)
It sounds pretty mediocre to me.Good performance and all, but the recording quality leaves much to be desired. Intrusive audience chatter, the band sounds harsh and constricted, and there's excessive treble throughout making Bob sound almost shrill.(DM)
I approached this set with great expectations and was very disappointed. The sound quality may be good by '78 standards, but not up to the standards of the 90s. I can't listen to it with any pleasure. I always did like Budokan very much - and hoped that this would be even better. Well, not so.
