RADIO UNNAMEABLE

no label 1CDR

Bob Fass radio broadcast (WBAI-FM, New York, NY); March 28, 1963

Impromptu radio appearance by Bob Dylan and Suze Rotolo. The roughly one-hour recording includes several conversations (with Dylan posing variously as Rory Grossman, Rumple Billy Burp, Elvis Bickel, and Frog Rugster). Fass plays acetates of several tracks from the then-unreleased Freewheelin', which are indistinguishable from the released tracks, as well as other music.

NOTE: Not recommended. This set omits the closing song from each performance, in each case the encore "Not Fade Away." Complete versions of these performances can be found on the fan project
"ABCD."

rmd: I'm getting great pleasure from this set. The entirely acoustic early show, coupled with the long acoustic section of the second show, makes for a delightfully extended acoustic listening experience. But it's the whole package - including the excellent sound quality - which just leaves me feeling better at the end than I did at the start.

Probably an alternative title for

NOTE: Apparently duplicates the 4CD "Documents Of Bob Dylan" set.

THE REAL GLASGOW CONCERT

Autumn Stone 2D

(1) SECC (Glasgow, Scotland); June 21, 1998
(2) Mud Island (Memphis, TN); July 26, 1988

Tracklist: (1) Gotta Serve Somebody, Man In The Long Black Coat, Cold Irons Bound, Positively Fourth Street, Silvio, Boots Of Spanish Leather, Masters Of War, Mama You Been On My Mind, Tangled Up In Blue, Forever Young, Desolation Row, Highway 61 Revisited, Love Sick, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, Blowin' In The Wind
(2) Subterranean Homesick Blues, Absolutely Sweet Marie, Memphis Blues Again, Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall

rmd: While the sound quality of this recording is not so good as those for other shows on this tour, the performance is top-notch. The filler tracks are in superior sound, but the performance is not up to Dylan's standards.

REAL LIVE OUTTAKES

Yellow Cat 022 [T-426]

Tracklist: Just Like A Woman, When You Gonna Wake Up?, Seņor, Times They Are A-Changin', Knockin On Heaven's Door, Shelter From The Storm, To Ramona, With God On Our Side, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Tupelo Honey (w/Van Morrison), Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat, Blowin' In The Wind, Mr Tambourine Man, Enough Is Enough

THE REAL SOUND

Red Sky 1014 [T-462]

Wolf Trap (Vienna, VA); September 8, 1993

Tracklist: Memphis Blues Again, All Along The Watchtower, Positively 4th Street, Silvio, Born In Time, BlackJack Davey, The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, Boots Of Spanish Leather, Maggie's Farm, Series Of Dreams, Boots Of Spanish Leather (inc.), It Ain't Me Babe

DEEP: 77 minute soundboard recording which omits two circulating tracks. The quality here is in-your-face, vocals in all their full-throated, raspy glory with nuances intact, and music well balanced and vivid also. A milestone show of sorts as we get the live debut of "Series of Dreams." Dylan's vocals are crystal clear and well defined. This is a stretch, but the only negative I can come up with is that some may find the recording is a bit too up front. An essential set, with some nice insert info on how BDs albums have charted over the years, gold/platinum status, etc.

rmd: Not quite soundboard quality, taken from a hearing-impaired feed. While the "Series Of Dreams" makes the concert essential, the rest of Dylan's performance is very good.

REAL VOICE OF AMERICA

Tuff Bites 94.1011 [T-399]

(1) Performing Arts Center (Topeka, KS); April 28, 1994
(2) Civic Center (Peoria, IL); April 13, 1994

(2) You're A Big Girl Now, Simple Twist Of Fate, Under The Red Sky, Lady Came From Baltimore, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, God Knows, She Belongs To Me

NOTE: To be avoided. This CD reportedly has a major sonic defect.

rmd: The sound is bad on the main show, far too bass-heavy, and disastrous on the filler. The performances are quite good, but almost impossible to listen to.

(2) Columbia Records Studio A (New York, NY); December 1964 overdubs
(3) Columbia Records Studio A (New York, NY); June 9, 1964

Tracklist: (1) Like A Rolling Stone (many takes)
(2) House Of The Rising Sun
(3) I Shall Be Free #10

DEEP: Anyway, all the trax are taken from the CD-ROM, the sound is good but a bit thin (like it sounds on cheap computer speakers) and all in all it's a bit of a drag that won't warrant repeated listens. Nice a few times through but tiresome after that.

CDG: Unless you want to have it all, I'd stay clear of this one.

REHEARSALS FOR "MTV UNPLUGGED"

Tracklist: I Want You, Tombstone Blues, Tombstone Blues, Tombstone Blues, Tombstone Blues, I Want You, Don't Think Twice, Desolation Row, Hazel, Everything Is Broken, Times They Are A-Changin', Love Minus Zero, Dignity, With God On Our Side

NOTE: Where the fan projects based on this recording typically list four takes of "Tombstone Blues," the packaging for this disc lists only three. The breakdown into discrete takes is essentially arbitrary, and the contents do not vary.

RENALDO AND CLARA

Noriaa NRCD 46029 [T-514]

Soundtrack from the film

Tracklist: When I Paint My Masterpiece, Isis, Ballad in Plain D, Hard Rain, People Get Ready, It Ain't Me Babe, She Belongs To Me, It Takes A Lot To Laugh, If You See Her Say Hello, Romance In Durango, One Too Many Mornings, House Of The Rising Sun, One More Cup Of Coffee, Sara, The Water Is Wide, Patty's Gone To Laredo, Never Let Me Go, Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands, Tangled Up In Blue, Just Like A Woman, Knockin' On Heaven's Door

DEEP: An excellent release from Japan which (I assume) contains all the music from Renaldo And Clara. Of the 20 tunes, most are complete or almost complete, with the exception of abbreviated/cut off versions of a few unlikely tunes. Although some of the trax have dialogue intruding on them, the disk has a nice ebb and flow and fits together nicely. Quality is excellent considering the video source - a little hiss, fine definition, upfront vocals.

CDG: This disc is hampered by the fact that many performances are incomplete, and others are buried by dialogue. It includes all the most important and listenable cuts, though. The big let-down comes in its packaging, which omits almost all basic source information.

CDG: While not for the average listener, this disc represents the Rolling Thunder atmosphere well. Excellent stereo sound quality.

(6) Girl From The North Country, Knockin' On Heaven's Door
(7) License To Kill
(8) Obviously Five Believers
(9) My Back Pages

DEEP: A fine 11 track compilation with some nice selections. Recording quality throughout is excellent, actually, as are the renditions of some rarely played tunes. Strong upfront vocals and consistent clarity belie the fact that these trax are from different gigs. Highly recommended release.

rmd: A somewhat boring collection of pedestrian performances of songs from a pedestrian tour. "License To Kill" is the glorious exception.

NOTE: This Cd was reissued in 1999 as "This Is What You Want;"; the new edition falsely claims to be a collection of soundboard recordings.

RICH FOR POOR

Rambling Cowboy BUF 689145 2CD [T-006]

(1) Rich Stadium (Buffalo, NY); July 4, 1986 (line)
(2) Chabad Telethon segment (Mountain View, CA); August 5, 1986

Tracklist: (1) So Long Good Luck And Goodbye, Positively Fourth Street, Clean-Cut Kid, Emotionally Yours, Trust Yourself, We Had It All, Masters Of War; Straight Into Darkness, One Of These Days, The Waiting, Breakdown [Petty]; To Ramona, One Too Many Mornings, A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know, Band Of The Hand, When The Night Comes Falling, Lonesome Town, Ballad Of A Thin Man; Bye Bye Johnny, The Losing, Spike, Refugee [Petty]; Rainy Day Women #12 & 35; Seeing The Real You At Last; Across The Borderline
(2) Thank God

DEEP: The complete circulating tape from the satellite feed broadcast, 18 songs by Bob and 8 by Tom Petty, plus the bonus track. Quality is excellent, particularly sharp on the acoustic numbers, were the highlights of the Dylan/Petty pairing. A typical show for 1986, with a few particularly energetic songs featuring the ever-tasty leads of Mike Campbell and the keyboards of Benmont Tench. Not everyone's favorite tour, but more than cursory listens will reveal some great vocal performances. Nice package, too, color glossy photos, black disks. Recommended as a keepsake from '86.

RING THEM BELLS

Moonlight 9635 [c61:00] [T-068]

Studio On The Move (New Orleans, LA); March 7-24, 1989

Tracklist: Ring Them Bells, Shooting Star, God Knows, God Knows, What Good Am I?, Most Of The Time, Everything Is Broken, Political World, Political World, Born In Time, Dignity, Shooting Star: Disease Of Conceit, Ring Them Bells, Most Of The Time, Ring Them Bells

DEEP: A fine collection of the "new" Oh Mercy outtakes tape, which I'm told has been in circulation about a year. To my ears, "RTB" sounds a couple of generations better than "Deeds of Mercy," with virtually no hiss and a less bass-heavy sound. It also sounds a lot more punchy and clear. However, this collection does not entirely supersede "DOM" -- it does not include the 3 takes of "Series of Dreams" or the take of "What Was It You Wanted." It does, however, have additional versions of "Shooting Star," "Political World," and 2 abbreviated versions of "Ring Them Bells." All in all, an excellent and very worthwhile collection of outtakes, most of which are drastically different lyrically and musically from their released counterparts. Essential listening and highly recommended.

CDG: This one has gone through a digital filter too though, so it has less tape hiss, but also sacrifices some of the warmth. No need for this upgrade if you already have these tracks.

rmd: An improvement on all that has gone before, most notably "Deeds Of Mercy." There is much reduced hiss, thereby making the listening experience more pleasurable. The source tape appears to be closer to the master. Clearly therefore, "Ring Them Bells" is the better disc, if not quite so complete (Ben Taylor). "Ring Them Bells" definitely sounds to have gone through the digital mill to take out the hiss and brighten the sound, but the true presence of the music has been forfeited to a degree. It's not at all bad, but I'd advise any analog fan to stick with "Deeds Of Mercy." Bob's voice in particular suffers, where the metallic edge -- slight as it may be -- makes listening to more than a few songs just a bit tiring. (Matthew Zuckerman)
Sound quality is excellent and the songs themselves tend to be noticeably different, although not necessarily superior to, the released versions. Nice stuff, but not something I want to listen to all that much.

CDG: A disc that is a real killer.

rmd: An excellent (for the time) audience recording of a complete concert, including "Fever," with five bonus tracks from the night before.
rmd: Interesting setlist with rarities and excellent performances. Sound quality is very listenable, more distant and echoey than one would like, but with a pure and consistent tone. A good choice if you like this era.

NOTE: Not recommended. Reportedly attractively packaged, but incoherently organized. None of the three shows from which the bulk of the set is drawn is completely presented, and only the Cedar Rapids tracks are presented consecutively. The fifth, filler, disc, includes tracks not from the spring of 2000; but quite a few songs performed during the spring are omitted -- one even cut from the Cedar Rapids show. A botched job in a pretty box.

rmd: While no one show may be completely covered, it's worth getting for the music that is in there. In jazz, the mighty Duke himself said about music, " if it sounds good, it is good." This sounds good.

ROCK SOLID

Junkyard Angel 004-A [T-608]

Massey Hall (Toronto, ON); April 19, 1980 (line)

Tracklist: Gotta Serve Somebody, Covenant Woman, When You Gonna Wake Up, Precious Angel, Slow Train, Solid Rock, In The Garden, Cover Down Break Through

DEEP: Not much need be said about this terrific sounding set, allegedly the unreleased live album considered for official release way back when. The sound is as close to official release quality as you are likely to hear. The performances of the gospel material are breathtaking, Dylan's singing never better and his conviction awe-inspiring. Essential stuff.

rmd: I think this is Bob's greatest album ever, unreleased or not. Great performance and crystal clear sound.
rmd: Stunning quality "official" live recording that never actually made it to release. The performances are superb and committed.

(1) Stadthalle (Vienna, Austria); April 30, 1999
(2) Sporthalle (Linz, Austria); April 27, 1999

(2) My Back Pages, Desolation Row, Leopardskin Pillbox Hat, It Takes A Lot To Laugh
(3) All Along The Watchtower

DEEP: The first glass-mastered complete show from the Spring 99 Eurotrek is a good one, well worth the wait. that. A sublime, sometimes heart-wrenching acoustic set; followed by an intense, razor sharp, and dramatic electric set; plus five excellent filler tracks, all in warm, upfront quality. Nattily packaged, too.

rmd: Recording quality is astounding. Without question, the best Europe '99 disc.

ROLLING THUNDER REVUE

Flashback 01.94.0225 2CD [T-335]

Warehouse (New Orleans, LA); May 3, 1976

Tracklist: I Love My Music, Flint Hill Special, Werewolves Of London, Rollin' Across The USA; Dear Abbie, Asshole From El Paso [Revue]; Mr Tambourine Man, Love Minus Zero, Vincent Van Gogh, Maggies Farm, Mozambique; Eight Miles High, Jolly Roger, Lover Of The Bayou, Chestnut Mare [Roger McGuinn];, Do Right Woman, Gonna Build A Brand New World, Love Is A Pain In The Ass, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Red Telephone, Dancing In The Streets, Diamonds And Rust [Joan Baez]; Railroad Boy, I Pity The Poor Immigrant, Shelter From The Storm, Memphis Blues Again, Rita May, Lay Lady Lay, Idiot Wind, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Gotta Travel On

rmd: Very good quality soundboard, though not as good as the best from 1975-76. It's great to hear the non-Dylan performances from the show; you get a better sense of the Revue's total impact, which ranges from juvenile to sublime, rather than just getting Dylan's performances in isolation.
rmd: One of the best sounding bootlegs I have ever heard. Easily the best sounding Rolling Thunder Revue soundboard. The performance is better than any other 1976 show I have heard. The definitive 1976 Rolling Thunder document.

(2) Dignity, She Belongs To Me, Maggie's Farm, Ballad Of A Thin Man, It Ain't Me Babe

DEEP: Same show as
"Brixton Blues" in considerably lesser quality; vocals farther away, overall nowhere as sharp. Pass on it unless you're a completist who wants the 5 bonus trax from 5/29. Nice package with some good photos on this one.

NOTE: Reported by ICE magazine as a substantially superior version of the material previously released as
"Oh The Streets Of Rome"; the original Wanted Man release had conspicuous sonic defects which these discs supposedly remedy.

NOTE: Incomplete, dropping the concert's three final songs. Those three tracks are found on the badly programmed companion CD, "Can You Please Tell Me What I'm Doing Here," which inexplicably repeats the final seven tracks from this CD.

ROSELAND

Wanted Man WMM 066/067 [T-018]

Roseland Ballroom (New York, NY); October 18, 1994

Tracklist: Jokerman, If You See Her Say Hello, All Along The Watchtower, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, Tangled Up In Blue, Man In The Long Black Coat, Mr. Tambourine Man, Masters Of War, Don't Think Twice, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, God Knows, Tears Of Rage, Maggie's Farm, Ballad Of A Thin Man, My Back Pages

DEEP: Something about New York City must bring out the best in Dylan, as the 3-night stand in October of 1994 attests. This set presents the entire show from the 18th, and what a show it was. Another exceptional performance with several rarely played tunes popping up. Dylan is in fine voice throughout, investing much in his delivery and phrasing. "If You See Her, Say Hello" also is worthy of special mention. Quality is pretty good, very good level with a little up-treble EQ'ing. All in all a good set which could have been better with a few bonus trax. I recommend it; the show was truly exceptional.

ROUGH CUTS

Gold Standard 57119XK1 2CD [T-345]
Black Nite Crash SRE 1/2 [T-346]

Power Station (New York, NY); April 11-May 8, 1983

Tracklist: Sweetheart Like You, Someone's Got A Hold Of My Heart, Lord Protect My Child, Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground, Foot Of Pride, I And I, Tell Me, Union Sundown, Julius And Ethel, Jokerman, License To Kill, Man Of Peace, Don't Fall Apart On Me Tonight, Neighborhood Bully, Blind Willie McTell, This Was My Love, This Was My Love, Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground, Dark Groove, Don't Fly Unless Its Safe, Clean Cut Kid, Death Is Not The End, Sweetheart Like You, Union Sundown, Sweetheart Like You rehearsals

BIAB: Overall, this is an nice CD in excellent quality with some truly great performances. This is despite it being seemingly hastily put together and the officially released tracks. Also, they could have put all the different takes of the same songs together. General sound quality is truly excellent, very full stereo sound. There is some hiss present throughout but this is only really evident during quiet moments, with some exceptions.

Power Station (New York, NY); April 11-May 8, 1983

Tracklist: Sweetheart Like You, Someone's Got A Hold Of My Heart, Lord Protect My Child, Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground, Foot Of Pride, Tell Me, I And I, Union Sundown, Julius And Ethel, Jokerman, License To Kill, Man Of Peace, Neighborhood Bully, Blind Willie McTell, Don't Fall Apart On Me Tonight, Blind Willie McTell, This Was My Love, This Was My Love, Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground, Dark Groove, Don't Fly Unless It's Safe, Clean Cut Kid, Death Is Not The End, Sweetheart Like You, Union Sundown, Sweetheart Like You rehearsals

DEEP: The Infidels sessions tapes in excellent quality - on par with the original release of the early 90's. Nothing to say about this one other than it's one of the must haves. Decide for yourself whether it's the best album that never happend. Comes in a color glossy slipcase with terrific shot of Dylan and Knopfler on the cover.

NOTE: This CD omits the acoustic "Blind Willie McTell" (and duplicates the electric version); it is therefore no more complete than the original releases.

RUNDOWN TO MAGGIE

Diamonds In Your Ear 12 [T-131]

Rundown Studio (Santa Monica, CA); January 30, 1978

Tracklist: I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, Times They Are A-Changin', If You See Her Say Hello, I Don't Believe You, Tomorrow Is A Long Time, You're A Big Girl Now, Simple Twist Of Fate, If You See Her, Say Hello, I Don't Believe You, I Threw It All Away, Maggie's Farm, Repossession Blues, Girl From The North Country, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)

rmd: This is the '78 rehearsal tape, edited to omit partial songs and material between takes. The sound quality is quite good, slightly better then on "Moving Violation." The packaging is somewhat random, with a mid-60s Dylan 4-colored in day-glo tones on the cover and reasonably interesting photo of Bob looking through a broken telephone booth door on the foldout. and 4 rather odd cartoons images of Bob. The disc itself bears a reddish-brown and black two color silk screened photo of Dylan, maybe from '78, maybe more recent. Similar to, but nicer looking then the 1986 Press Conference picture disc.
