(2) Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, What Good Am I, Tombstone Blues, Tears of Rage, Mr Tambourine Man
(3) Obviously Five Believers

DEEP: Complete show from Oslo in excellent quality. It's taken several listens to appreciate this show. I got to thinkin' that maybe he was in a mellow frame of mind, which may have explained why he wasn't really "attacking" the vocals on the first 5 songs. And though the vocals were not as "LOUD" to my ears, I noticed the guitars certainly were. Not to mislead, the sound is great-upfront vocals, defined separation of instruments- but the loud guitars stand out. Overall, a good job with a phenomenal cover photo, some nice insert photos and colorful graphics. If not for 5 of the 6 bonus trax already being available on "One Hand Waving Free" ..........

rmd: This show was a slow starter; and the first electric set is quite uninspired. But Dylan wakes up during "Masters Of War," and the conclusion of the show is quite powerful. A typical summer '95 concert, quite disappointing. The sound quality and the packaging are first-rate, and the filler tracks are indeed very, very good.

SAN FRANCISCO PRESS CONFERENCE

Sound CDYLAN1 [T-117]

KQED-TV Studio (San Francisco, CA); December 3, 1965

rmd: A one cut (49:55) CD containing the 12/3/65 press conference. I have wonder why someone would bother to put this on CD, when there is so much music. It comes with 2 English booklets from 1965, and they are filled with mostly dated and incorrect information. (Anthony Kapolka)

NOTE: This disc was commercially issued without cover art, but accompanied by facsimiles of 1965 and 1966 concert programs. CDs including essentially the same audio material circulate through standard retail outlets at low prices; the variant including extraneous narration should be avoided if others are available.

DEEP: An astounding recording, a devastatingly bright, true sound highlighted by the full richness of Bob's vocals, vocals that were strong and energetic during this show, full of feeling and raw, naked emotion. A seemingly pedestrian setlist is eclipsed by the amazing recording quality and performances. Essential; it's a wild ride but enjoyable every step of the way.

rmd: The sound quality is stunning. And the performances - - a tremendous creative outpouring. Magnificent.

SAN JOSE REVISITED

Kiss The Stone 093 [T-215]

State University (San Jose, CA); May 9, 1992

Tracklist: Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, Positively Fourth Street, Union Sundown, Just Like A Woman, Drifter's Escape, Most Of The Time, Shelter From The Storm, Love Minus Zero, Little Moses, Boots Of Spanish Leather, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Idiot Wind, Absolutely Sweet Marie, All Along The Watchtower

CDG: A superb disc with excellent performances and an incredible playlist. The songs flow continuously; and Dylan is in top form, particularly his harmonica playing. The acoustic set is one I keep going back to.

rmd: A prime representation of the dramatic leap in quality of Dylan's concerts during 1992. Bob is singing out his nose at times, but it works well with the somewhat amorphous arrangements. At other points his vocals are downright inspired. It has all of the chaotic spontaneity, funny looseness, and charmingly unprofessional feel many of his shows of the late 80s and early 90s, but it also has enough of the intense focus and masterful craftsmanship of his more recent live material to please perfectionist fans. A very nice quality audience recording from a very distinct and turbulent time.

SAN RAFAEL REHEARSALS VOL. 2

Yellow Cat 033 [T-435]

rmd: The sound quality is okay, but these are definitely rough rehearsals. I think they lack a certain amount of energy; the music is occasionally quite good, but Dylan seems pretty uninterested the whole time and the stop and start nature of the music makes it tough to listen to in its entirety. (Mike Richardson)

A SATISFIED MAN

Blue Eye Records 002 [T-542]

Palace Theater (Waterbury, CT); November 11, 1975 (line)

Tracklist: Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, Romance In Durango, Isis, Blowin' In The Wind (w/Joan Baez), Water Is Wide (w/Joan Baez), I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine (w/Joan Baez), Never Let Me Go (w/Joan Baez), I Shall Be Released (w/Joan Baez), Simple Twist Of Fate, Oh Sister, Hurricane, One More Cup Of Coffee, Sara, Just Like A Woman, Knockin' On Heaven's Door (w/Roger McGuinn), This Land Is Your Land (w/Revue)

DEEP: A more complete re-release of the classic 11/11/75 Waterbury soundboard, containing all 13 trax originally found on "Tell It Like It Is" plus 3 more [still missing the 2 openers]. The soundboard quality is mighty fine. The mix is a good one, with the highs and the lows flowing nicely together and neither one dominating. Everything is sharp and upfront, most importantly Bob's vocals. As for the show, well, it just doesn't get much better than this. Loose and spontaneous, like they're just blowin' into town to hit you with a lethal dose of (salvation) and folk and roll that is chock full of mystery, history and a strange but interesting cast of characters both in the songs and on stage. Dylan sings with wild abandon in some places and with a soft, breathtaking beauty in others. The acoustic set with Joan Baez is worth the price of admission, with their voices melding together wonderfully to create a unique and compelling sound. What a unique sound Dylan put together for these shows. And he never sang better, wrapping that voice of sand and glue around words and sounds like only he can. Great cover, too.

CDG: Excellent quality recording of a very nice Rolling Thunder show. Simply a great disc.

rmd: Possibly the best circulating Rolling Thunder recording, nicely packaged. Highly recommended, an essential document of Dylan at his 1975 peak.

DEEP: The acoustic stuff has been out before in the same quality. If you don't have it, it would behoove you to obtain these. Some people consider these the penultimate Dylan performances, often referring to them as "amphetamine-soaked classic performances." Personally, I prefer this stuff in small doses. A couple of electric numbers at the end have been out before on the classic
"A Week In The Life." I love this stuff and highly recommend it if you don't already have it.

rmd: The sound quality is very good, though there is a fair amount of surface noise from the source acetates.

SKELETON SONGS

Happyweed 040 [T-082]

(1) Bringing It All Back Home -- doctored versions of album tracks
(2) Highway 61 Revisited -- doctored versions of album tracks

Tracklist: (1) Love Minus Zero/No Limit, Subterranean Homesick Blues, Outlaw Blues, She Belongs To Me, Bob Dylan's 115th Dream, Maggie's Farm, On The Road Again
(2) Like A Rolling Stone, Tombstone Blues, It Takes A Lot To Laugh, From A Buick 6, Highway 61 Revisited, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Queen Jane Approximately, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Desolation Row

NOTE: This CD turned out to be a hoax -- an electronically altered pirating of the officially released albums. It claimed to be the backing tracks from the 1965 studio sessions, without Dylan's vocal tracks.

ISIS: It's a novelty disc. It sounds like a soundcheck heard from down the corridor. In effect, a karaoke tape.

(2) Down In The Flood, I Want You, Just Like A Woman, Tangled Up In Blue, It Takes A Lot To Laugh, Boots Of Spanish Leather, Memphis Blues Again, Don't Think Twice

DEEP: Companion piece to
"Romantic Facts Of Musketeers," with bonus trax which combine to provide an almost-complete 3/29 show. Better sound than "Romantic Facts," very very good actually, and a killer performance. Very enjoyable disk, slick photos presumably from the show. This disk highly recommended.

A SLICE OF SWINGIN' PIG Vol. 3

Swingin' Pig 1CD [T-178]

A "sampler" selecting material from the label's catalog. The only Dylan track is the May 7, 1965 performance "Mr Tambourine Man" at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester, presumably taken from the common line recording.

SLOWHAND MASTERFILE (Part 4)

Antrabata 1D

Although this disc, drawn from Clapton's March 1976 Shangri-La sessions, claims to feature Dylan, it includes no Dylan vocal tracks, and none of the tracks reported to include Dylan on guitar.
"Happy, Happy Birthday Eric" includes several Dylan vocals drawn from these sessions.

SOMETHING IS HAPPENING HERE

Lucky LR 001/002 [T-081]

Vorst Nationaal (Brussels, Belgium); June 22, 1996

Tracklist: Drifter's Escape, Se¤or, All Along The Watchtower, Shelter From The Storm, I Don't Believe You, Silvio, Tangled Up In Blue, Love Minus Zero, Don't Think Twice, Ballad Of A Thin Man, It Takes A Lot To Laugh, Maggie's Farm, Alabama Getaway, The Times They Are A-Changin', Rainy Day Women #12 & 35

DEEP: This one is just fine (but not so good as 1995's show in Brussels). Clear, distinct, upfront vocals and punchy instrumentation, all well balanced and separated, add up to a winner in the quality department. I ain't complainin' about the set list, either. Dylan is in fine voice throughout, sounding very forceful and energized, and the band kicks it into overdrive on the uptempo numbers. Would have been nice to include some filler but these days, who can complain. Superb looking package with color picture discs and color photos throughout.

ISIS: Dylan in a confident and commanding mood. Old timer numbers that have, in the past, suffered a certain cursory treatment are revisited with a new freshness. Recording quality is pretty much top-notch throughout. An excellent recording of an excellent concert.

CDG: The whole '96 European tour is great, and this is a very nice disc; but the shows from Holland were better.

NOTE: This set omits Dylan's opening song, "Oh Babe It Ain't No Lie." The fan project
"Jones Beach July 30, 1999" includes that missing track, and is a complete representation of the evening's performances.

rmd: While the sound quality is almost perfect, Dylan was pretty much just going through the motions during his solo sets on this tour.

SONGS OF DARKNESS, SONGS OF LIGHT

Razor's Edge 016/017 [T-444]

(1) Labatts Apollo (Manchester, UK); April 5, 1995
(2) Labatts Apollo (Manchester, UK); April 4, 1995

Tracklist: (1) Down In The Flood, If Not For You, All Along The Watchtower, Queen Jane Approximately, Watching The River Flow, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Mr Tambourine Man, Boots Of Spanish Leather, Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, Tombstone Blues, She Belongs To Me, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, Ballad Of A Thin Man, My Back Pages, Maggie's Farm
(2) I Want You, Shooting Star, Most Likely You Go Your Way, Simple Twist Of Fate, One Too Many Mornings, Dignity, I And I

DEEP: If you haven't heard these Manchester shows you are missing three of the best performances of the tour. The sound here is again excellent; it sorts out nicely with the vocals upfront even if a smidgen harsh. The bass on the band is a bit much but a little EQ handles it. Just a great performance and very enjoyable set. Quality on the bonus trax is not quite up to snuff but decent nonetheless. Another biblical type cover from our friends at Razor's Edge; a couple of cool shots on the inside. I highly recommend this disk also.

SONGS THAT MADE HIM FAMOUS

Tuff Bites 95.1012 [T-439]

(1) Civic Auditorium (Santa Monica, CA); March 27, 1965
(2) Skip Weshner radio (New York, NY); February 1963
(3) Billy Faier radio (New York, NY); October 1962

Tracklist: (1) To Ramona, Gates Of Eden, If You Gotta Go Go Now, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), Love Minus Zero/No Limit, Mr Tambourine Man, Don't Think Twice, With God On Our Side, She Belongs To Me, It Ain't Me Babe, The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, All I Really Want To Do, It's All Over Now, Baby Blue
(2) Tomorrow Is A Long Time, Masters Of War, Bob Dylan's Blues
(3) Baby Let Me Follow You Down, Talkin' John Birch Paranoid Blues, Death Of Emmett Till, Make Me A Pallet On Your Floor

DEEP: Sound leaves a lot to be desired, but still enjoyable to hear another acoustic '65 show that's listenable. Radio shows are scratchy and sound like they are off vinyl, but not bad if you don't have 'em. Recommended.

(2) Simple Twist Of Fate (inserted before Oh Sister)

NOTE: This CD is apparently a clone of "Stop Crying."

SOUL

Kiss 021/22 [T-505]

Tempodrom (Berlin, Germany); June 17, 1996

Tracklist: Drifter's Escape, Shake Sugaree, All Along The Watchtower, Positively Fourth Street, Watching The River Flow, Silvio, Tangled Up In Blue, Love Minus Zero/No Limit, Friend Of The Devil, Seeing The Real You At Last, Queen Jane Approximately, Maggie's Farm, Alabama Getaway, My Back Pages, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35

DEEP: Oh lawdy me, if they could all be this good. The quality is outstanding and illustrates why a great audience recording is oft-times better than a soundboard. Dylan's performance was nothing short of magnificent at this show and the band is with him step for step. I can't recall a show with so many performances that just knocked me out. The quality leaves nothing to be desired - every rasp, growl and purr (many) of that voice is captured in all its world weariness, every note and harp blow and guitar chord and steel pluck is up front and balanced and separated and true. Go out and find this right now. One of the finest performances I've ever heard. I can't say enough about this show - it knocks me out.

ISIS: A truly astounding recording. Superb quality with powerful vocals and clear instrumentation. Most notable, Dylan's performance is magnificent.

THE SOUND OF SILENCE

PORT 1/2 2D

(1) Rose Garden (Portland, OR); June 12, 1999
(2) Southern Illinois University Arena (Carbondale, IL); February 12, 1999

Tracklist: (1) Hallelujah I'm Ready To Go, Mr. Tambourine Man, Masters Of War, Girl From The North Country, Tangled Up In Blue, All Along The Watchtower, Not Dark Yet, Memphis Blues Again, Just Like A Woman, Highway 61 Revisited, Love Sick, Like A Rolling Stone, Don't Think Twice; [w/Paul Simon] The Sound Of Silence, I Walk The Line, Blue Moon Of Kentucky, Knockin' On Heaven's Door.
(2) My Back Pages, 'Til I Fell In Love With You, Positively Fourth Street, Highway 61 Revisited

NOTE: Apparently cloned from the
"Portland, Oregon" fan project.

rmd: While the recording quality is not technically perfect, the warmth and atmosphere more than makes up for any lack of clarity. Despite an apparently pedestrian setlist, the performances showcase some glorious vocalising from Dylan; each and every song is convincingly rendered. A relentless and devastating tide of mystery and wonder.

SOUNDS INSIDE MY MIND

Razor's Edge 018 [T-466]

(1) Phoenix Festival (Stratford-Upon-Avon, UK); July 14, 1995
(2)

Tracklist: (1) Drifter's Escape, I Want You, All Along The Watchtower, Tears Of Rage, Silvio, Tangled Up In Blue, Mama You Been On My Mind, One Too Many Mornings, Seeing The Real You At Last, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35
(2) Positively Fourth Street

DEEP: The impressive run of high quality recordings from '95 continues with the entire outdoor Phoenix Festival show in excellent quality, and what a show it was. I have to mention the packaging - designed like a Theater program of a Shakespearean play with 3 phenomenal shots of Bob and references to Hamlet. A candidate for CD packaging Hall of Fame. I recommend it.

(8) I Don't Believe You
(9) Tell Me Momma, Like A Rolling Stone, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Baby Let Me Follow You Down, One Too Many Mornings
(10) Ballad Of A Thin Man

NOTE: The CD notes inaccurately attribute many of the 1966 tracks to Copenhagen.

rmd: The sound quality of tracks from ETD is not as good as that generally circulating on the film soundtrack. But the sound quality of "Thin Man" was somewhat better on this CD than what I've heard on tape and video of that particular performance. (BS)

(2) Universal Amphitheater (Los Angeles, CA); June 7, 1978

Tracklist: (1) Baby Stop Crying, Mr Tambourine Man, Shelter From The Storm, Love Minus Zero, Tangled Up In Blue, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Like A Rolling Stone, One More Cup Of Coffee, Blowin' In The Wind, I Want You, Se¤or, Just Like A Woman, Oh Sister, All Along The Watchtower, All I Really Want To Do, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)
(2) Simple Twist Of Fate (inserted before Oh Sister)

DEEP: 16 tracks from the concert presented in what I consider to be the best quality of any unofficial '78 show to date. Recording quality is excellent, with great separation and full frontal vocals. A fine selection of tracks and a strong performance from Mr. Bob adds up to a real keeper. If you're into this tour you'll love this disk. If you're not, you still might. I do :-) Pity it's not the whole show.

rmd: More intense than the Budokan performances, and Dylan seems to enjoy performing more. In all respects a very good show, in very good if not excellent sound quality.

rmd: Compiled from the vinyl boots "Stealin'"s; and "John Birch Society Blues." The sound is identical to those old boots (i.e. very muddy). Still, it has some excellent material. Warning: like other Condor cd boots, the speed is off --a tad slow. (Anthony Kapolka)

(2) Maggie's Farm, It Ain't Me Babe, Masters Of War

CDG: A splendid quality PA tape of the show at Radio City Hall.

rmd: The best recording from the '88 tour. The sound quality is pure, rich, full-bodied, and crystal clear, mastered to bring out an intensely intimate feeling. Most of the songs are sung with the 80s hand in fist vocal stance and a rough, raw bar band sound. The focus and articulation are remarkable. The two traditional tunes are beautifully sung. Great sound, great setlist, outstanding performance.

STUCK INSIDE OF ROSELAND

Meteor/Front Row FM2113 [T-446]

Roseland, (New York, NY); October 19, 1994

Tracklist: If You See Her Say Hello, All Along The Watchtower, You're A Big Girl Now, Tangled Up In Blue, Most Likely You Go Your Way, Mama You Been On My Mind, One Too Many Mornings, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Memphis Blues Again, Shelter From The Storm, Maggie's Farm

rmd: The band is super-tight and super-charged with drummer Winston Watson in particularly fine form. The songs are rough and hard, delivered without mercy. Dylan's vocals are spot-on; even his harmonica sounds in sync. Great electric arrangements of a handful of BOTT songs.

STUDIO REHEARSALS

NOTE: Apparently a direct clone of
"The French Girl".

Tracklist: Farewell, A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, Bob Dylan's Dream, Boots Of Spanish Leather, John Brown, Who Killed Davey Moore, Blowin' In The Wind

DEEP: A signfiicant upgrade. Much clearer sound, less hiss, very enjoyable disk. The interview makes for very good listening, too. Thumbs up to this one and some killer period photos to boot.

SUMMER NIGHT 1995

QRecords 9/10 [T-033]

(1) Robert F. Kennedy Stadium (Washington, DC) June 25, 1995
(2) Robert F. Kennedy Stadium (Washington, DC) June 24, 1995

Tracklist: (1) Drifter's Escape, Watching The River Flow, All Along The Watchtower, Simple Twist Of Fate, Silvio, Mama You Been On My Mind, Desolation Row, One Too Many Mornings, Maggie's Farm, What Good Am I, It Takes A Lot To Laugh, Like A Rolling Stone, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35
(2) Pledging My Time, Girl From The North Country, Don't Think Twice, God Knows, Joey, Knockin' On Heaven's Door

DEEP: Something tells me Mr. Bob knew this would be the last show he'd ever play with Jerry, for he and the band played like there would be no tomorrow. The whole of the 25th is presented here in excellent quality, with crisp clarity and separation and vocals right up front. The performance is nothing short of tremendous, with Garcia guesting on "It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry," and "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35." In between, the highlights are many. This show deserves its special recognition as a highlight of '95. Bonus trax from the 24th also are excellent. A real keeper.

rmd: Terrific sound, especially for a stadium concert, and some unusual song choices. The filler tracks are the same high quality. A great show, a great performance, great discs.

CDG: A complete recording of the main show in outstanding sound quality. Not the most interesting setlist, but very good nevertheless.

(2) Drifter's Escape, Man In Me, All Along The Watchtower

SUMMER TOUR 1995 VOL II

IPPY 014/015 [T-499]

(1) Westfalenhalle (Dortmund, Germany); July 12, 1995
(2) Liederhalle (Stuttgart, Germany); July 10, 1995

Tracklist: (1) All Along The Watchtower, Shooting Star, It Takes A Lot To Laugh, Silvio, Tangled Up In Blue, Boots Of Spanish Leather, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Memphis Blues Again, I Believe In You, Cat's In The Well, Knockin' On Heaven's Door, My Back Pages, Rainy Day Women 12 & 35
(2) Born In Time, Shelter From The Storm, Silvio, Mama You Been On My Mind

DEEP: Let's cut to the quick. I picked this set up at a recent show and was pumped all the way home to play it due to the setlist rarities. Got home, flung the coat, pulled the disk, inserted and cued "Every Grain of Sand" and, ....... mediocrity. Thought, OK, the other show will be better and I cued "Shooting Star" and..... more mediocrity. Thought, OK, the Stuttgart filler will be better and cued up "Born in Time" and..... mediocrity still surrounded me. What a drag, too. I'm not saying they are bad and that the performances aren't up to snuff, just that the sound quality is just OK and it's hard for me to get past that. Unlike some people, I'd rather have an average show in excellent quality than a great show of so-so quality. The subtle nuances inherent in Dylan's voice and the band's playing (which need to be heard to determine the quality of a show) are not readily apparent on these disks. The nice variety of tracks salvages things somewhat, but overall a disappointment.

NOTE: Volume II inexplicably omits the opening tracks of the July 12 show, "Drifter's Escape" and "Señor."

SUN BEATING AT THE ALTAR

Rattlesnake 040 1CD

Sun Theater (Anaheim, CA); March 10, 2000 (early show)

Tracklist: Roving Gambler, Tomorrow Is A Long Time, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), Tangled Up In Blue, This World Can't Stand Long, Dignity, Tell Me That It Isn't True, Things Have Changed, Not Dark Yet, Highway 61 Revisited, Love Sick, Not Fade Away, Blowin' In The Wind

rmd: Great, intense, club show with an almost jovial, carnivalesque atmosphere. The sound is very good, far and away the best sounding audience recording from a small club that you're likely to find anywhere. The setlist should speak for itself. Even if the words at times escape Bob, the feeling, and the meaning of the song, do not. A superb way to spend 70 minutes of your time. (DM)
